Actually, you're totally right. After looking at FROMM's site and re-watching the Natura Pet videos, I realized that what they actually said was there were no other canning facilities *they could make use of* which I guess means either nobody has capacity or nobody meets their standards or pricing or whatever. But it does seem that Menu Foods has the market mostly cornered except for the smaller "boutique" brands like FROMM and Natura Pet and one or two of the larger ones as you've said.

Just goes to show how consolidated things really are at the manufacturing level, not just with pet foods, but with appliances, electronics, and probably most everything else. The illusion of competition is maintained by keeping separate brand names but often the brand name is the *only* difference between a lot of different products.

My boss Farley is out today because he said his dog was throwing up all night. I'm so hoping that he wasn't feeding his dog any MenuFood items... He has the coolest dog.

We switched from IAMS to Happy Paws, a natural food produced here on the island... was interesting to note that their facility is inspected by five different agencies, including the USFDA.

Talked with our Vet who said what we were using was fine.. for now. That kind of scared us, so we switched. Now too, with all the other recalls for salmonella and other stuff in dog treats, its a rather frightening experience.

China says it didn't even ship any of the Gluten as claimed too, but then out of 94 recalls this year so far, over 60 are for products made in China. Makes you want to read the labels a whole lot closer.

There is also a claim on Anderson Cooper's site that I haven't seen anywhere else yet... someone is investigating whether the melamine was *intentionally* added. Cooper is reporting that melamine can be used as a protein enhancer and is questioning whether it might have been used to increase the price of the wheat gluten, since higher protein gluten sells for more.

what about the nation's human food supply -

makes me wonder about the fact that Sysco distributes A LOT of the food that is served in restaurants nation-wide, form high-end to low end - there trucks deliver food from California to Delaware and everyplace in between - could we be facing the same problems by limiting the number of sources that manufacture the foods we eat every day?

makes me wonder....
