Simply because it's good karma to do so. I can't think of any reason more important than that.
Good people share the benefits of their knowledge with those just starting out. In my opinion, mentoring newbies is one of the best things that a successful business person can do.
I help my friends get jobs at the magazines I write for all the time. I don't worry about them getting stories that I might want, because I know that I have something they don't, which is my own particular style and the experience of having served my editors well for six years of quality writing. They know they can depend on me to turn in good stories, and I know I can depend on them to keep the stories coming. Plus I get the soul satisfaction of having helped someone who is in a situation that I was once in myself. I wish I'd had someone help ME out when I was just starting out. To me, it's all about sharing the wealth and giving back. It just makes me feel better about myself to do so. And, in the end, hopefully something great will come my way because of it.
I was just asking the question ...
I certainly believe in helping newbies. I was sure helped a lot by a lot of people here and elsewhere when I first started. I try and help whenever I can. I even try and help with links because I know how hard they are to come by. And by helping out newbies, you might be helping yourself down the road, you never know when the next big thing is going to happen and who is going to own it.
