Wow, what a guy misses when he's sleeping.
First, comparing a bareback video shoot to a snuf film where a guy gets a bullet in the head is an extreme example. Squirt, I do like a lot of what you have to say, but I wish you wouldn't resort to these Fundamentalist Christian tactics. Let's compare apples and apples.
Second, I absolutely think it is wrong to shoot bareback content without all of the players knowing the HIV status of their fellow actors.
Third, shooting a gang bang film where the bottom is a positive guy and the tops are a mixed bag of who knows because we didn't ask, I think this marginalizes and demeans HIV-positive people. It sends out a message: you're diseased, you're going to die anyway so we don't care what happens to you now. It also sends out a message that only bottoms get HIV and that tops are perfectly safe fucking without condoms.
Fifth, I think it is wrong to glorify the bug-chasing culture. So if it were me, I would only shoot a film with all HIV-positive actors.
Sixth, having said all of that, I think there is a place and a market for barebacking videos. With the progress made in drug therapy, a whole population of men who were condemned to death rebounded to a healthy life. They are living and not dying. Many may want to see themselves represented in porn. Many may not want to be reminded of their disease every time an actor puts on a condom. Many do not buy the reinfection theory or don't care, they figure their lives will ultimately be cut short at some point, so they want to enjoy what they have.
I don't buy the notion that bareback porn lures people into to barebacking themselves. If you are HIV-negative and you're not asking your sexual partners about their status, and you're not practicing safer sex, then there's something wrong with your head. And watching a bunch of guys fuck with or without condoms is not going to fix that.
However, having said that, we probably need to do greater outreach to guys under 30 because they were all just kids or not even born when the whole AIDS crisis began. And like someone pointed out, they don't have the experience of watching their entire friend-base disappear.
I think barebacking, like using drugs, drinking, or smoking, is a personal choice. I think if you're going to shoot it, then make sure everyone on the shoot has a big sit-down and talks about the issues. I'm more pro-communication than I am pro-barebacking. If two consenting adult sit down and talk about what's happening and make a fully informed decision, then that's really all we can ask. Because we're never going to stop people from doing things that aren't good for them.
I think you can also use your video as a way to educate people. Put a warning message at the beginning of it that can't be fast-forwarded through. Tell people that the actors all talked about HIV before they shot the film, tell people that this is a fantasy and all or none of these actors might be HIV-positive. Tell people that they need to talk to their sexual partners before having sex. And tell people that mixing recreational drugs and sex increases the possibility that they won't be in a state of mind to make an informed decision in the moment.
I put barebacking content on my site and I don't have a problem with it. I do, however, put a big warning jpeg on every barebacking gallery (see below). And the image is linked to page where I say much of what I have just said here. I also provide links to AIDS organizations around the world. For me, this is the ethical and responsible thing for me to do. Before I added this feature to my site and wrestled with the idea of having bareback content on my site. Since adding the feature to my site, I haven't lost a minute's sleep.
I think a more dangerous situation that needs our attention is the epidemic crystal meth use in our community. We ought to be doing more to stamp out that scourge. In the past year, we've had to say goodbye to two friends, not because they died, but because they're absolutely and completely fucked up on crystal meth. Tina is a more dangerous vehicle leading to HIV-infection than barebacking porn and we're only beginning to talk about it when we should be screaming about it.
