Yup, and I must admit, it was freakin' hilarious! Chef just about made me cry out NOoooooooooo .... we've lost another, but I didn't.
They can have that crazy wife beater!
Yet it's perfectly permissible for straight men to play gay roles? Look at Brokeback Mountain, Broken Hearts Club, The Birdcage (Hmmm, they all begin with "B", it's a conspiracy!!!). I know it's just the way things are but for a gay actor not being believable as a straight romantic lead is crazy.
So how do we, as a community, change that? Openly gay filmmakers could make really good straight love stories starring well known gay actors in the starring roles. Indy movies are getting as much attention as big studios these days.
Rupert Everett is one of the few openly gay actors who gets cool roles. He just played Sherlock Holmes for BBC. That was pretty cool. They are a lot more laid back in Europe about sexuality.
Even here, though, most directors recognize how audiences think, and cast their films accordingly. If they want to get people to come see their movies, they know what they have to do. Indie film directors aren't any different really, even the gay ones.
The only way to change it is if directors start to cast openly gay actors. And I just don't know when that's going to happen. We live in America, after all, the most backwards-assed country in the world when it comes to sex, violence and looking at humans as three-dimensional creatures instead of just commodities.
As far as I am concerned, Ken just smoked that issues right on the nose: "they" (film makers) mainly worry about profit and making a name for themselves, and rarely concern themselves with making things better, aside from their wallet and bankbook/account.
:donmike: how dare you forgot Torch Song Trilogy!
Arnold has got some pretty big shoes..
I guess you guys are right. It just boggles my mind that nobody will try something to see if it will work. I wonder if Brokeback would have been anywhere near as successful if they had gotten two gay actors to play the main characters.
Nope. It woulda come and gone in three seconds flat. They took some flack for casting straight actors in the roles, but the truth is... who in Middle America would have paid to see Mitchell Anderson and Wilson Cruz playing those roles?
Um, I think the same can be said for a lot of pornographers on this very site. :)Quote:
