Honestly, I'm completely confounded that anyone of your (assumed) intellect could not see the similarities. Discrimination is discrimination, no matter what minority it is directed toward. It amounts to prejudice and/or hatred based on one's dislike toward a certain community of people.
The ridiculous assumption that we "haven't had it as bad" as black people is
insulting to the thousands gay youths who have committed suicide because of what they perceived to be hatred toward them for being gay.
Not all discrimination has to be visible to be real, Lee. It can merely be perceived or insinuated. We only haven't "had it as bad" because the gay rights movement has come of age in more "enlightened" times, and political correctness kind of snuck in there and shut some people up. But that does not take away from the continued hatred toward gays and lesbians that is on display every time a law is proposed to deny us simple civil rights--or that the fact that same-sex sexual activity is still illegal in certain states. I'd say that's "having it pretty bad" by anyone's standards.

They were just talking about something similar on Feast of Fools (my favorite podcast) the other day. GLAAD is demanding that Paris Hilton make a public apology about making comments about gay people and black people. One of the frequent co-hosts of the show made the comment that we should not ask someone like that to make an apology because at least being public with their opinion we know where they stand. The apology doesn't take away what they said and it doesn't change their opinion. What good is it? It's like that whole Michael Richards thing. There were people and organizations who demanded a public apology and what good did it do? You got to watch him stew for a few minutes and now he'll know to only make those kinds of statements to his own close group of friends, out of the public eye.
Let Hardaway make an ass out of himself. Then we, as a community, will know what team not to support, and what games not to watch.

Thats part of the problem with the whole 'equal rights' thing, irrespective of what side of the argument you sit on, very few people can actually see the other sides viewpoint because they are so blinded by being 'right' themselves.
