that being said, you're right.. it's all been done before.
My biggest negative with Brokeback Mountain was that it is about 30 minutes too long. There are too many extraneous scenes that do nothing to continue the story or develop the characters and the editing leaves them disjointed and as if they had cut chunks out of a much longer film trying to get it to a comfortable length. I was brokeback after sitting in the theater that long:high:
You know, I've often thought that it was a shame big Hollywood movies only show you what you need to see. I loved Dazed and Confused because the whole movie was a day in the life of these high school kids in 1976. There were small plot lines and one thread that kept the movie running, but not every scene had significant importance, a lot of it just made you feel good or unlock a memory. There have been lots of movies where I wished they had shown more of a really cool supporting character but wouldn't because it didn't further the plot. I haven't seen Brokeback yet so I'm not disagreeing with you. Your comment just made me think of that. :)Quote:

And I'm with DonMike. I LOVE long movies. Anytime there is a 3-hour movie coming out, I RUSH to the theater. Some of my favorite movies ever are the longer ones. The three Lord of the Rings movies didn't even become MOVIES for me until they released the extended cuts on DVD. I don't have a short attention span. Hell, when they played Branagh's 4-hour Hamlet, I was in heaven. Now THAT's a cinematic experience! :)

reminded me of titanic... way too much hype for an overblown story.
in this case it was a elegaic short story turned into a bloated hollywood flick... sigh.
things got pretty bad when i kept hoping for more shorts of gorgeous alberta scenery!

Well I can actually say I haven't seen Brokeback Mountain, but I will probably get it when it comes out on DVD. I have said this before when this subject has come up. I don't know if anyone here has seen "Latter Days" since there has been no mention of it. It is a powerful movie that honestly will make you think. I purchased the DVD on a whim and totally lost it the first time I saw it and then last night on LOGO they played it and it's as powerful the second time around as it was the first. I watched it and thought to myself. Everyone is making all the noise about Brokeback Mountain and how could they let Latter Days go by un-noticed. Could it be because it’s based on the Mormon Religion belief that all gays are going to hell. If you want to really do some soul searching check it out. I truly don't think you would be disappointed, matter of fact you just may learn a thing or two. Well that’s just my thought anyway, but I am curious if anyone else has seen it and what they thought?

Actually, I did see Latter Days. The director, CJ Cox, was dating a friend of mine and when my friend introduced me he kept saying that the guy was the director of "Sweet Homo Alabama". Well, I figured he was just in the industry. So I'm talking to him like he's a fellow pornographer and I'm saying that I work in the industry too, I do music and sales and blah blah blah. So finally he says something about Reese Witherspoon, and I got all confused. Then it hit me. My friend was making a joke about his having directed "Sweet Home Alabama". I was mortified. I said, "you work in real movies, I thought you worked in porn" and they all had a good laugh. So when Latter Days came out we all ran to see it just because we had hung out with CJ.Quote:

I saw it soon after it hit the theater's here. I thought is was a pretty good movie. It was well acted, written and followed a story line. Now, there wasn't the kind of nudity or sex that we see in mainstream straight movies but does every movie have to have that? It was set in a time period that I thought accurately portrayed. It was sad, but true to life. It was also a huge step for gay characters that aren't the typical sterotypes: best friend, funny, tragic, psycotic that dies by a crime, show tunes queen. I would say go see it first then judge it. I have seen Will & Grace a few time and do not care for it. But at least I watched it to form an opinion.
Saw it the other day. Very well put together, in fact, a great movie. Didn't "rip my heart out" but it did have a sad ending. It's a film everyone should see.Quote:

Just came across this GREAT story by a friend of mine. He wrote it for Out.com. For anyone who doesn't think that Brokeback Mountain is a profoundly resonant film that tells it like it is and is very important to the gay community, you should read this. You may dislike the movie yourself for "political" reasons, but stories like this prove, to me at least, that gay politics are irrelevant when telling a story that has such far-reaching potential as Brokeback.
