Just because a company puts on an awards show to boost their brand recognition does not automatically discount their intentions. We've all gathered by now that Lee is pretty much a cynic who is skeptical about everything. Meanwhile, as a businessman, he recognizes the efforts of others to increase their own presence and profitability. However, the thing that is wrong with that scenario is that not all business folk think the same way. For one business person to claim they know the motives and intentions behind the efforts of others is rather arrogant and presumptuous.
As I said before, I think it's best to take the awards with a grain of salt. I think Lee is trying to point out that the awards do not measure with any accuracy the supposed excellence of any site nominated. And both he and Patti have a point on that. But that doesn't mean that you can't still take pride in being recognized by somebody.
So, don't let the nay-sayers and the pessimists get you down, Jacob. It's not worth it. :)

I have no problem with Lee. I respect everyone's views even if I tend to disagree with his. Great thing about a democracy, we can do that.
I believe there is more to Lee GWW vs CyberSocket then he is letting on to and that we know about. Why Lee singled me out in this I haven't a clue.
Anywho I am done with this debate. I have stated and justified my opinions and that's good enough for me. This was fun, but has consumed way too much of my time and I need to focus my time back on my business.
I have no hard feelings and respect other peoples views as well, doesn't mean I have to change mine.
It is just an awards show, let's have fun with it, that's what it's about.
It is odd though, you don't see this sort of disagreement towards the awards on other boards, but just on GWW.

LiveTwinksCam, let me put it this way. ken is a writer, he's published a book as well as working for more than one magazine. if he finds himself nominated for a writing award alongside the following:
1. a third grader
2. someone who is learning english and isn't proficient
3. someone taking a high school creative writing class
4. an average joe with a lot of spelling and punctuation errors
it doesn't really make much of a statement about his writing either way since he is a professional and they are obviously not. in fact, whether he wins or loses, we already know in this scenario that the contest should be his. if the average joe wins the writing prize because he has lots of buddies to vote for him, it does NOT make him a better writer than ken is so both the nomination and the award are meaningless.
now if ken gets nominated for a writing award alongside published writers and people who make their living writing, whether he wins or not, i think to stand alongside his peers makes even the nomination an honor.
what cybersocket is doing by having no standards or guidelines is mixing the two examples above up. you could have a great site and yet the sites nominated in your category could be good, bad or could be galleries or not even sites.

I have an idea. Why doesn't GWW have it's own awards? Who is better qualified to judge the quality of gay sites then the members of GWW? It doesn't have to be a big deal... just a few categories and no prizes. It might be fun.
i think there would be hard feelings unless voting was strictly anonymous. also think making it a big deal would be more fun and add more weight to the awards.
Lee would have to be careful with that. The members of this site fluctuate too often, and, depending on the criteria, the voting process may be subject to just as much ridicule as the voting process for any awards show.Quote:
