Video Editing - Capturing Video at the Highest Quality...?

Hey Guys. So just recently i've been trying my hand at video editing and even though i think i've got the basics, i still have a ton of questions when it comes to capturing and rendering (anything besides the actual editing).

I tried capturing a scene from one of my videos but i'm not very satisfied with the final quality. I'm using a high-end 3ccd video camera and i used a monster wire for the capture. I used the default video capture feature on Sony Vegas 5 at 720x480x32 in AVI format.

The video that i captured is much darker (as viewed on my video camera's LCD) and is also lacking the crispness and detail of the original. ???

What could be going on? Is this a common result (darkness and loss of detail) when you're capturing video?




PS. Would you guys recommend that use another program (sorenson squeeze, maybe) to render the final video to Quicktime, Real Media, and Windows Media formats (Even though Vegas offers rendering options)?

vegas is a good program, and i've seen excellent stuff made with it.

check your camcorder - most likely, there are brightness and contrast settings for your viewfinder and lcd. my camcorder and the camcorders of a couple people i know have the viewfinder and lcd had default settings set at a brighter setting and with more contrast then the camcorders actually produced. i have set mine so it matches the actual videos as they are captured.

also if you shoot with autofocus and autoexposure, you may be able to tweak your videos so they'll be clearer and brighter by messing with the manual settings, or some of the presets. for example, some of my videos were coming out a little blurry till i tried sports mode.

Anyways, we just retired from the strip club this past fall and have 41 years experence between us. Leanna, my wife, she danced for 15 years, and 11 of those were spent on the road traveling the country as a feature show.
Umm, we have a personal site online that's been running for a little over 5 years now. We specialize in REAL strip club content.
Umm, I'm not real good about bragging on either of us, I could do allot with a mic in my hand, and Leanna's on stage! Bawhahahaa! But we both feel that action speaks louder than words. Umm, we been married 28 years this past May. We live on a farm in Indiana. I think that's about all I can say. If you have any questions about what I've said I'd be glad to answer. Ok now about the video. I've shot thousands of hours of video in the clubs and that's pretty much a lower light setting. I thought I'd try to explain what has worked best for me as far as getting a "close" to correct feel on the video.
1. You have to remember that your working with 2 different types of pixel aspect ratios. The lcd will hardly ever give you a accuate feel. The best way that I found to get it close is open your captured video file in a project.

Anyway... Once you've opened the file and have it ready to play set your camcorder close to your monitor. Then play them both. Adjust the lcd settings until there close to what you see on your monitor. "Now this is providing your shooting in a similar light setting each time"

Now as far as rendering. Vegas has several differnet settings when it comes to rendering the file itself. "Not knowing what codec your using in the render process" But, you can cruch the file to the extreme and loose quality. Or not cruch it as much and have better quality, with the larger file size. It depends on your preference. In my case I choose to cruch as much as possible to push the surfer towards the purchase of the DVD's.. Which are excellent quality.

Hey Greg :) And thanks for the tips. Matching my camcorder's LCD with my monitor's is a great idea

A couple thoughts that might help.

1. The content you're transferring from your camcorder is digital, so the quality of the cable you're using won't make any difference whatsoever. The data is either there or it's not, quality won't change based on any part of the hardware capture chain.

2. What you're seeing on your monitor after capture should be pretty accurate to what's there in the .avi, so if it's inherently dark, something is most likely awry with the LCD monitor on your camcorder. I would echo Greg's suggestion, and perhaps offer another one: Take the SVHS or composite video out of your camcorder and hook it up to an external video monitor (CRT rather than LCD) and see what you're getting relative to what's being displayed on the LCD screen built into the camcorder. You should be able to adjust the relative brightness and contrast of the internal LCD to match what you're seeing on the video monitor, which may or may not be a close match to what your computer monitor shows.

3. If your specific problem is lack of crispness and detail on the final encoded video, that would definitely point to the codec and/or encoder settings you're using. It's always a tradeoff between file size, sharpness/detail, and how smooth the video is when you're encoding using any of the lossy codecs (WM, QT, Real, etc) and sometimes you have to tweak the settings some to come up with a good combination for the particular video you're encoding. For example, we shoot a lot of video outdoors, and that doesn't compress as well as video shot in, say, a hotel room because the leaves and other elements of the background are moving constantly and take more space to store than the white wall of a hotel room does.

I can't speak to the codecs built into Vegas, but I can say that Sorenson's codecs are, by reputation, of very high quality, and I've found that they generally do a better job both in terms of quality and file size (not to mention encoding speed) than the built-in codecs in Premiere. I've heard similar things about Canopus Procoder, but haven't used it.

Oh and i did attach the camcorder to the TV like you said, and the quality was all there. So, i don't think it's the actual video that's too dark or whatever. I think it's something that i'm doing (or not doing) while i'm capturing the video from the camcorder. hmmmm...Any ideas?

oh and btw...I just used Premier to take some frame grabs, and unlike the actual video footage, the frame grabs look perfectly fine (I'll attach one below).

Hey GPallen. Have you visited the Vegas forums area? Those folks are extreamly helpfull over there when it comes to questions. What I see you talking about here as far the video being darker is pretty much the norm. If you try to lighten with the setting it washes it out. Then if you go the other way its to dark. Video is a whole different animal really, and it takes allot testing by trial and error to get use too.

One other thing I was thinking about here is your harddrives. You are rendering from one drive to another I assume. I know you can't render video on the same drive as the origianl file with much luck.

There isn't any inherent technical or quality reason with rendering to and from the same drive, provided the drive is fast enough to read and write the data simultaneously. If there were a problem, it would manifest as jerks or skips in the rendered video, not in darker-than-normal scenes.

And if you're capturing from a DV device using FireWire, there's absolutely nothing you can be doing to screw up the capture (well, other than having a slow drive that drops frames); it's simply a dump of digital data with no image processing whatsoever.

So my guess is that somewhere in the bowels of Vegas or Premiere (whichever you're using), you've got something set that's lowering contrast or brightness or something on what you're viewing. If you want to try one other test, you can take video that you've captured from the camcorder as an .avi, and output it and write it back to the camcorder on a fresh tape, then view the tape. My guess is that you'll see video that's the same quality as the source. If you do, then it's definitely something in the settings of either your editing tool (Premiere or Vegas) or perhaps in the settings for your monitor or monitor drivers.

Vegas and Premiere are incredibly powerful and flexible, but the cost of that is they're also full of switches and adjustments, so it's entirely possible that something just got tweaked by accident. In that case, if you get too annoyed with it, having someone that knows the program you're using come over and take a look might save you a lot of time and frustration.

I tried to look at your sample videos.
I clicked on the link, (I didn't read your instructions of course, 'cause I wanna see what I'm buying fast...lots of pages to look at on the web!)
My media player launched, blinked a "codec download error" and nothing showed on the screen.

But being a very interested surfer, I looked at your instructions, figuring I'd spend a few more minutes trying to see these great samples.
Being the REALLY smart surfer, I understood what a codec was, so I went to the site listed to get the necessary codec. (I wondered why you just didn't have a download link on your site, but hey, who knows)

Went to the codec site, and got lost. It looks like it was written for developers and other geeks.
Couldn't find the codec I needed, downloaded something that LOOKED right, and it was just all gibberish. All about developing something.

About that time, the wife was walking around the house, so i just gave up. Maybe I'll try again sometime, maybe not.
Think I'll go to the easy site instead. That one had simple click and go wmv links. (I buy lots of adult videos, and think Bill gates is well, so I know all about windows media cause I got it free with my new computer. It was just in there and worked without messing around.

I think that should be a fairly accurate example of what a "determined" surfer would find.
A non determined surfer would bail before that. the first click and fail link would lose them.
I understand you were going for ultra good quality, but what many fail to recognize is the average surfer neither cares, nor has the patience for it.
If it's not absurdly simple, off they go.

I wish you luck, just offering an unbiased look at what you have to offer.
It would be nice to have more "real" stripper content.

generally videos are darker when transfered to your computer. a lot of times what may appear to be excessive light in your lcd display is the perfect amount of light. on the flip side as in your situation, what appears to be perfect light in your lcd is just not enough when transfered to your computer. I've been doing video for 3 years, have spoken to numerous people about it... and while I'm sure there is a reason behind it all.... nonetheless that's just how it is.

ok an update...one of my friends transferred one of these [dark] videos onto his laptop, and guess what? It looked PERFECTLY FINE!!! Perfect lighting and perfect clarity. So it must just be MY LCD monitor.

I've had problems before with monitors displaying a darker than usual image, so i can't believe i didn't think about that at the very start. DUHH!!

I have yet to try and adjust the settings on my monitor, but it can't possibly be anything else.

What I wonder is this… Do you think the way I have that page worded is confusing? The reason I asked is because we do serve up the proper codec from our server. The link to it is just a couple of words to the right of where you clicked to the developers site.

My intentions were this..
Since new surfers are so paranoid about downloading anything right off the bat from an adult site for fear of the viruses they’ve hear so much about. And with the bad publicity that’s associated with adult, and downloading an EXE file. I just simply don’t want the surfer to freak out, at least that’s my intentions.

Also, the reason I put the link to the developers site on the page is so that any surfer new or old has the opportunity to go and read about the codec before they load it on there machines. I’m trying to show my honesty to the surfer, and make them feel confortible about what he/she is getting ready to load by giving them the choice of either loaded the codec from the developers site, or our own.

What are your thought’s on this?

You had the right idea, it's just the developer's page is even more confusing.
And since the porn surfer has the attention span of the gnat, I fear they would be off and gone.
I understand you are going for quality/small file size, but the simple fact is 100% of Windows computers have media player installed.
We can argue about the "rightness" of that all day, but it's there, and the surfer don't care.

Maybe the demos should be at least in some easily usable format and then a "and if you are interested, we can give you much higher quality over here by doing this........

Well see, this is just my thought’s, and I do REALLY appreciate your input on this subject…
What I’m thinking is this. See, I don’t really care for porn surfers that much. There use to getting a free ride out here with all the free porn online. My targeted audience is the person who actually likes to frequent strip clubs and watch strippers. They’re a little older usually, and more the Voyeur type males and females, and couples. Plus I get a lot of the younger girls who what to learn. See to me porn surfer’s are what I refer to as Lookie Lou’s. The Lookie Lou’s who are even half way interested though, will sign up regardless because of the uniqueness of the content.

Now the ones we cater to seem to hang on for years after they’ve signed up, and got comfortable with the fact where going to be here. Plus my ole lady takes the time to talk to them. First they’ll do a month, or maybe 3, just to make sure we actually update every week. They’ll do that a time or two, and talk to the ole lady about who knows what, then they’ll go for the yearly. We have several folks who have been with us 5 years plus now, and a good batch of them who’s been with us 2 to 3 years. There just a different crowd I think. They’re surfing the porn sites, but they have to be plucked out a few at a time I guess.

Now on this video thing, we seem to get allot of people who will cuss Bill Gates and the windows operating system even though they use it. (go figure on that one) But they will download an after market viewer just because they can. ( I guess) …But anyway they’ll download Real Player, Winamp, BS, or some other free player just because they feel better about it…
(Again, I guess) I do some of the after market players have allot bells and whistles they seem to like. I’m fine with regular Windows player as a default player. But I do know the videos seem to look and play better in the BS player for example. (So who knows on that one)

Now we use to use the Real Player format when we started putting videos out in 2000, in fact I still have a couple hundred RP files in the members area now. But……. What happened was this. RP use to be a free download… It might still be, honestly I haven’t even looked in awhile. (And I liked RP by the way, and this isn’t an attack on them… But!
What RP decided to do a few years ago (02-03 I think, its been awhile) Anyway, what they did was write a nifty lil script into the free version of their player. What it did was this…. The surfer launches their RP to watch a video file. RP used a pop up a window that says HEY! Get the Latest and Greatest version of the FREE RP Now…
So, the surfer goes after it thinking it’s a good deal.
BUT, guess what… RP didn’t bother to tell the surfer that once they’ve loaded the new LAG-RP that it would time out 14 days later, and they lose all ability to play ANY videos with it!
(Yep, nifty lil up sale tactic towards a paid version though)
But, MY GOD the problems that caused us were Unbelievable! We had people writing telling us the videos didn’t work anymore. We also had new sign-ups telling us they were able to view the videos in the free area, but not in the members area. Needless to say they thought we were ripping them off. I ended up making different form letters (which I hate with a passion) but did it anyway because the questions as to what had happened were all down the same line.

Well, I said to myself then. I said self, you ain’t NEVER going through that again. So I went on the hunt for a codec that covers the most possible players. Small files, good quality, flexibility, etc. “And, most importantly I wanted to be able to dish it out as a free download from our server to the surfers” So, that’s where the Xvid codec came into play. It covers Windows, and Mac OS’s and a ton of the free, and paid versions of different video players.
And, I’m also looking at it this way. If a surfer hasn’t got the time, or doesn’t have the know how to load a free 600k codec, I don’t really have the time to fool with that surfer either.

Now, here’s the deal the way I see it. If I don’t have a link to the developers site (confusing or not) so that surfer can go see for themselves that what I’m offering to dish out is on the legit. Then to them, I’m no different than any of the fly by night operator they’ve heard horror story’s about from the media, who try to load something on there machine that ends up being a virus or something even worse. (does that make sense?)

Well I have an affiliate that just mentioned something similar to this a month or so ago. He asked if I would consider running a separate section for broad band users, which are much larger file sizes obviously. Right now the largest files I’m running are just over 100mb for our monthly features, and then a few hundred 20 to 50mb files for our members only.
Now this IS something I’m thinking about, but I’m not real keen on the idea because I know the larger files can be pulled off and edited into DVD’s by not so honest parties. And see, what I intend to do is offer a full line of our own DVD products on the sites early this fall.

…See my wife and I just got out of the club business last fall (04) So these last few months we’ve “just finally” been able to get out here and see what’s going on, and focus more on our websites. I’m hoping to go into this coming season with things hooked up the way we planned in the beginning. Now I’m not one to make excuses. But being in the clubs at night, collecting content, dealing with the girls, burning and filing content, model releases etc, just runs you to death. The hours over the last few years have just been totally ridiculous.

So anyway, my question would be this… Do you think that by offering the surfer that higher quality that he or she might think they were already seeing the best quality you had to offer, and then steer clear of buying the DVD’s? (The reduced quality I’m showing obviously isn’t a good example of the digital quality I have.)

Then I give them the Shock an Aww treatment once they’ve joined and actually seen how much video we have. Then, show them samples of the different types of shows we offer on our own line of DVD’s. I had to put a motor in one of our little cars, then I had to shoot in southern IN last week, then I had to turn right around this past weekend and shoot the nudist camp. Plus were redoing the sites, and still unpacking boxes of stuff that we forgot we even had while this is going on.
And I thought I had Retied last fall…. Bawhahaa!

As far as players, windows media is free, will always be free, and is installed in 100% of the current operating windows systems shipped.
It's just there, and it works.

Plus, the basic media server software is free, so most people use it and are comfortable.

There is a real media player you can keep for free, but they do make it easier to download the "time-out" one you mention.

But windows media, is free and pre-installed.
they click on a windows media file, and it just plays.
no downloads, no installs, etc.

as for the DVDs, no, I think you will still sell those.
People want the easy ability to put it on their TV when they want.
If anything, I think your online sales will boost your DVD sales.
It doesn't make "logical" sense, but it does make "human nature" sense.

Well I sure appreciate your time, and your input. I’ve been kind of sandbagging out here (so to speak) and laying low for quite a awhile really. I’ve never really tried to promote our sites, or take on affiliates. I think I’m looking at the affiliates issue a little different than some also. (of course this is really another subject) But I only want affiliates to want to promote our sites. I can’t see myself spamming these boards with the hype about the hottest new program since the pocket on a shirt, all the hype about conversions and yada, yada. Experience so far tells me that surfers don’t just whip out a credit card and pay right away. They lurk for awhile, ask a few questions to see if they get a response to make sure there’s someone manning the ship. Oh I’ve had some spur of the moment sales, but there not as common as I’ve seen some folks put it.
(I know I’m still drifting off here)

I did want to mention something else here. Since I’m going to start putting new DVD’s on the site regularly this fall. Obviously I want to play the largest crowd possible. I thought that what I would do is put the sleeve covers in a table, and then “try” to write up a little text about the shows, run time etc. Then also offer the surfer a chance to load a short clip of the show. I am going to use the Windows format, Quicktime, and the Xvid/vidX files as well. That will be a good chance for me test the players again and see just what viewer the surfers are using most widely on our sites.

Again, I do appreciate your time and input on my project. This is something that I have a ton of time and enjoyment in. Not to mention trial and error! Bawhahaa!

i guess it was a misunderstanding. I did type "hehe" so that you guys knew i was just joking :) i didn't care that you guys were discussing what you needed to discuss at all

No problems here at all. As a sponsor it’s just a friendly way to network with other people as far as I’m concerned. Sometimes the conversation goes off the beaten trail. Now If I was to just start a thread and just say Hey! here I am with all the bells and whistles yada, yada. Then I'm just like other folks doing the same, and I'm not like other folks.
I'm like this on this on the whole Internet deal though. If I’m not able to meet people for some friendly conversation, then I'm not interested in doing business with them either. It takes a lot of time in the saddle and friendly conversation to gain the trust of the people.

No harm done here, no offence taken.
