The TODAY show this morning about Porn and Kids

Did anyone see the Today show this morning and the story about Pornography?

The gist of the show was that a recent study, and I can't remember the name of the group who did the study, said that more than 70% of the online porn was being accessed by kids between the ages of 11-17. Anyone ever hear of this study?

They had some right wing zealot on the show that said porn sites must be made to use age verification systems. When Matt Lauer asked him what about the use of credit cards, he said that that doesn't work because parents can get pre-paid credit cards and debit cards for their underage kinds.

The right wing zealot also said that the porn industry does everything they can to get underage kids to come to their sites. They may be true of online straight pron sites based out of the U.S., but honestly, I don't know of any gay sites or gay website owners based here in the U.S. that does that. Hell, we all do everything we can to get minors from accessing our sites.

They also talked about the new bill which is now in congress to require age verification for adult sites as well as they 25% proposed tax on all sites required to comply with 2257. The tax will be used supposedly to monitor adult websites and make sure they are complying with 2257 and restricting minors from their sites.

If parents are getting their minor children pre-paid credit cards or debit cards, and then not monitoring what their children do on the internet....WHOSE FAULT IS THAT? Why is it our fault....? When did parents quit taking responsibility for the actions of their children, when did parents quit acting like parents, and why are we getting the blame for what their kids are doing online?

when are they going to introduce the legislation for that?

The family computer should be in a public room so that parents can monitor their children's activity. Pretty simple, huh? Why can't these god-damned breeders figure this shit out for themselves? And when did these fucking republicans decide that they need to legislate every aspect of our lives? Aren't they suppose to be the party for 'less government'?

They probably have the computer in their bedrooms so they can look at porn when their kids are in bed. LOL!

hdkbill - contact the today show, perhaps NOT as an adult webmaster, and ask for the source of that study. that's a place to start.

70% of online porn? what a joke! adults are constantly surfing porn, and what's more, adults from 18 - over 80 are surfing it. that's a lot more years of life than 11 - 17.

well, we all know that the religious right are always going to skew the data to point the light so it supports their self righteous and hypocritcal agenda.

it's not surprising. the sad part is...the democrats, or moderates can't put in words against this type of abuse for fear of giving their opponents ample ammunition to use against them in the next election.... and heaven forbid anyone should defend porn producers.... why that's simply unthinkable..

We need to crash one of their programs ... get our own mouthpieces on there.. we should start demanding equal time.

actually i strongly believe we need a publicist AND a figurehead to make the porn industry less threatening, and to get the truth out there to the average people.

At the end of the show they did put up some graphics detailing what parents could do to "protect" their kids from porn. One of the suggestions was to have the family computer in a room where the parents could see what their kid were looking at. Another was for parents to have software such as Net Nanny installed on their computers. Well, duh!

Gee, if these f**king parents would just monitor what their kids do and accept responsibility for their actions....this would not be an issue. But, then, as Tom said, the porn industry is the current whipping boy, so I don't think it would make much of a difference. The politicians are still going to try to garner votes at our expense regardless of what we do or say. Afterall, communism isn't around for them to beat up on, so they are coming after us.

why don't theses parents just use filtering software? it's as simple as a few fucking clicks.

The report says that most parents aren't aware of such software......gee, guess that is our fault.

The report also said that adult site are not using online age verification systems which are readily available and then goes on to say that a quick search on google using "online age verification software" will show at least 7 such software that is available.....well, sorry, I did such a search and it came up with 1,090,000 hit......and I did not find any software that actually requires the user to enter, name, address and then enter either DL number or passport number, and then automatically checks to verify age which is what the report says such software does.

The problem I see is that the institute who wrote this report, The Third Way, if funded by the Democrat Party....so now, if both parties are coming after us...we may be in for a rough ride.

If anyone knows of such software, let us all know.

It does get me really upset when I see shows like ABC world news tonight. They did the same show.
Myself I don’t want any kids on my site at all even looking at the tour pages. What also gets me is some web sites don’t care what’s on their tour pages, so much hard-core!
As far as I can see, it’s up to the parent to watch over what their kids do online, either in a chat room, or surfing the web. The kids lock themselves in there rooms and the parents have no clue what they are doing, or talking to. Then something happens and we are all lumped into some sick little world.
We do need a union, or someone that can speak for all of us and go on the news and talk shows.
I’m also sure that web masters outside of the usa are laughing because they are the ones that are going to be making the big bucks when more and more mom and pop web sites go under.

The same kids taking credit cards to signup for sites are the same ones that will take a drivers license to signup for sites. Just like the same kids that got fake ID's to be in porn. ALREADY there are thousands of results for fake ID on google... just a sample Of course that's our fault as well right?

I think the main issue here is freesites and TGP's. The goal here is to get rid of free porn. You have to wonder.. if they can't stop the free exchange of music and movies.. how will they stop the free exchange of porn?

The only solution to ANY problem relating to children is the parents/guardians. Drugs, sex, pregnancy, access to porn, etc. But of course there's no money in that for the government :groovy:

well i remember when i was younger i would usually sneak on the computer in the living room since well they had the computer in view of everything but well when they went to bed it was time to rattle the desk a bit :)...

It’s a different age. I guess all the congressman and senators forgot what it was like being a kid. Also the kid’s parents. Put on your thinking cap and go way back, I mean way back. Remember the local candy store? Where you said you were looking at the comic books? What you were doing was looking at playboy?
In a strange way the congressman and senators are right. I agree with them that there is too much hard-core out there. Looking at a tour page it should be like going to the beach, not a bathhouse.

What are they going to do with it? Hell, probably go start another war somewhere. The scary thing is that it is supposed to go to law enforcement to crack down on the illegal activities of child pornongraphy and stopping adult online websites from allowing minors to access the sites. In other words, we will pay to have the government "crack down" on us for allowing kids, who have no parental supervision, from entering our websites.

This is why I always do a little happy dance whenever I read that the network news shows are losing viewers. Public opinion for mainstream journalists is at an all time low. They're abandoning the networks and major publications in favor of alternative news sources.

Have you heard about Paul Hackett, the Democratic Iraq vet who's only five points behind his GOP opponent in an Ohio congressional race? A couple of weeks ago he was a longshot with no money and no major media coverage. But then bloggers started talking about the race and donations started pouring in. Now he has a realistic shot at winning and he's doing interviews with Chris Matthews.

The mainstream media is now lagging behind the internet. We've almost reached a point where TV and print coverage are no longer necessary. We don't need favorable coverage from the Today Show. We can reach the public and shape public opinion on our own.

Check out the blogs and message boards. Few people are buying into this "protect the children" crap.

Having raised a teenager to adult hood, and having a 5 year old boy in the house..... and remembering cleaning goo off the underside of my desk when my eldest was 16.....

Listen, porn for grown-ups is great. Heck, I suppose porn for 16 year old boys is great too....

But I HATE the fact that when I am surfing innocently along, and I mistype a URL, I am frequenly faced with a cum covered BBW with a truncheon up her butt.

I hate to say it folks, but because we as an industry have done such a piss poor job of policing ourselves, the outcome was inevitiable. I think that perhaps some age verification MIGHT be in order for access to porn. (Credit cards are good age verification, that part was bullshit). I don't like the fact that there is free hardcore porn so easily available to kids.

Had we all agreed to play by the same rules, with black non-graphic splash pages, non-explicit tours, age verification for access to adult material - had WE made protecting kids from porn one of our priorities, had we (we are the best and brightest in the computing world folks - and we make the most money!!!!) figured out good age verification standards - we would STILL be fighting for our right to exist, but at least we would have a leg to stand on.

MOST of us do try and discourage kids. We don't want them, they don't have money. But then we have these MFing companies who redirect URL's, autodownload porn and dialers, etc.... and we, as a group, shrugged our shoulders and said "But, hey - it's a revenue model".

I am a pornographer, and proud of it. But I am also a parent, and you know - I see thier point of view.

I agree that some porn sites are out of control and they try to get people by mistyped url's and using misleading meta tags. But this age verification will do nothing to fix this problem. How would this law affect porn hosted in other countries? Answer, it wouldn't. There would be no way to ensure all porn sites use this US government AVS. There are politicians that still think American owns the internet and can impose any law they feel like on the net. This thinking is so naive it is not even funny. Also having one AVS company collecting all this data will just get hacked and cause major problems for everyone. Not to mention the government collecting all the personal data and knowing what sites you visit is a very scary thought..

You are right... a huge AVS wouldnt do it, and it wont control porn from other countries....

My arguement, however - is that we could have / should have set up our OWN standards. In a utopion society - of course. :)

A few stupid, greedy and unethical people have done most of the damage. But then again, we stood by and watched silently as they did it.

This is not a legitimate third party report. It was written specifically to slam porn without regard to accurate statistics. No investigation was done directly by Third Way. Instead they cite sources whose accuracy is questionable.

One example is their (most damaging) claim that 12 to 17-year-olds are the biggest users of online porn. The mainstream media has even begun putting this figure out.

That statistic is cited to a book called "The Science of How Internet Pornography Radically Alters the Human Brain and Body." So it's no surprise they'd make such a claim in a book like that.

I've tried to find out exactly how they came to that finding to no avail, but we'll assume it was simply through random questioning of various age groups. This certainly lead to inaccurate numbers since kids would be more likely to admit to looking at porn than adults would due to it's taboo nature in mainstream America.

They also mention http://internet-filter-review.topten...phy-statistics in their citation of that particular claim. Their motto is "We Do The Research So You Don't Have To," yet offer no insight as to how this research was conducted. This site is in fact merely an affiliate promoting various filtering programs and using shock value as their marketing method towards parents. Not exactly a reliable source this "report" should have been citing.

Furthermore, adult site traffic logs totally debunk the 12-17yo theory. If kids really did account for 70% of porn traffic, we'd expect to see a huge decrease in traffic numbers during school day hours. This simply is not the case.


Another thing that ticks me off about this report is their inclusion of ADULTS to inflate their child stats...

57% of 9-19 year olds with internet access have come into contact with online pornography.

60% of 15-24 year olds either know how to get around filtering software or know someone who can show them how.
