Good Luck New Orleans

The old city that sits below sea level is in the direct path of force 5 hurricane Katrina. New Orleans could potentialy be devastated by a direct hit. Because much of the city is 5-10 feet below sea level, the only way to remove flood water is by physically pumping it out. It's not looking good. :(

I was looking forward to Southern Decadence next week but it sure doesn't look like it's gonna happen this year. In fact, we had 2 trips to New Orleans planned for September. Barring some major shift in this storm, the people of New Orleans are going to be cleaning up/rebuilding for many weeks to come.

I have so many good memories from the times I've been in New Orleans. Will76 , and all the others out that way, I wish you all the best.

It's looking like New Orleans is going to be gone in 24 hours. :(

They had the same scare last year. Let's hope the 'cane suddenly changes its mind and moves into a VERY rural area instead.

Yeah, doesnt look good now that it is up to category 5. Hope all those people can get out of there in time.

makes me think of the Hurricane parties we used to have when I lived in Florida. Graba keg and head to the beach and wait for it to come in. Damn we were stupid back in those days......

New Orleans and Biloxi and Mobile are all in our thoughts and prayers. John and I are following the news and it doesn't look good, especially for the Big Easy.

A category 5 hurricane has been the biggest fear for New Orleans for years and now it looks like it's going to happen.

As for Southern Decadence.....don't believe it's going to happen this year.

George Bush is urging the poor and homeless to evacuate the city of New Orleans. Oh yeah, he forgot to tell them how and where. I guess he would've sent those huge air cargo planes to help them get to a safe location, but they're across the world in Iraq helping the fight for freedom and democracy and they're much better at carting the wounded and coffins containing the dead bodies of our friends and family back home. Anyway, what can a bunch of low income and homeless do for the US, after all they can't even bother buying health insurance and don't support the economy by filling their cars up with $3.00/gallon gas. So, now we can answer the age old question; what happens when you fill the New Orleans Superdome with tens of thousands of human beings below sea level and add water form a 28 foot storm surge. Should be interesting watching Georgie on TV with that sullen face (and heartwoming smirk) "praying" for all the families who lost a loved one - again. I'm so glad that he's guided by god and his religion.

I hope everything works out for the city. Would be a shame if anything should happen to that great city. Always a good time.:china:

Just wanted to let you all know I got out 2am saturday night after spending all day boarding up my business and home. Now I dont think I will be comiong back to anything! I am so freaked out. I wasn't going to leave..but then they said catagory 4. All I had time for was my family and papers, laptop and cameras. My whole life is in the French Quarter which looks like is going under 20 feet of water.
It was good I left at that time I made it to Houston in 7 hours. Friends left yesterday and moved 26 miles in 9 hours on the hwy.
This is just so crazy!!

From what I've read and heard, most of the levees held and New Orleans was spared a lot since the force of the hurricane went east of the City.
There is some flood and damage obviously..but nothing close to what they thought it would be.

The downside, I heard a FEMA spokesman say it could be DAYS before they could do anything worthwhile in terms of aid. They have to get rid of all that water.

This is all so unreal. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those who live there or have family and friends there. And after thinking of the tragedy of the people, think of all the historical buildings and art that might get ruined. I've never been but I've heard it's a beautiful city. I hope there won't be too much damage and people can return to their homes soon. :(

One bright spot in face of terrible tragedy. The rest of the story is too horrible to copy here but I'm terribly sad now. I hope people are able to get to safety. :(

Earlier today, I was getting the impression from the news that NO was spared much of the devastation. But it doesn't appear to be so. The French Quarter looks like it survived with relatively minor damage. But the FQ is only a small portion of a big city. The other areas look totally wrecked.

As the Governor of LA said, "New Orleans is a bowl and it is currently filled with water". I didn't know this but the French Quarter is the highest spot in New Orleans which, I guess, is why it isn't flooded and the rest of the city is under water. Apparently the northeast, east and southeast are flooded the worse.

FEMA is saying that it may be weeks or months before the residents who left are allowed back into the city. I can't even imagine not knowing what happened to my home and those I care about.

They were saying this would be our version of the Tsunami... 40,000 or more dead.. blah blah blah. Stupid reporters out in the wind showing off trying to create drama.. "Oh I can barely stand" blah blah blah

Thankfully, 40,000 people didn't die in New Orleans. But from what I can tell, only the French Quarter was spared massive destruction. Major parts of New Orleans are under water and will be for a long time to come. The water supply is most likely contaminated and power will be out for a long time.

Fox News was especially sensationalistic in their coverage during Katrina's approach (no surprise there)... predicting total destruction. CNN was much more reserved (except for the idiot reporter standing in the wind) but they didn't seem to be prepared to provide decent on-the-scene coverage from New Orleans. For example, notable hurricane show-off Anderson Cooper couldn't get closer than Baton Rouge. While Fox's Shepard Smith was in the French Quarter for the entire time.

Crazy stuff, ive been watching this on the news over the past couple of days, glad we heard from Buck too!

80%+ of the city underwater and over 20,000 people having to live in shelters, what we went through in Florida last year was nothing in comparison.

Dorian is in Atlanta. Keith is in Miami. You know their server's front page was actually working until yesterday mid-day. Somehow one of their servers stays going through all that. They are looking to .... somehow.... relocate their servers elsewhere. Now I have certainly given more serious thought then ever to off-site backups.

OMG you and I watched the same footage!! I was so disgusted I stopped watching after the showoff in the wind with the goggles like some kind of dumbass megalomaniac! It wasn't until the day before yesterday that I saw the aftermath of the storm.. I don't know what your coverage there of what Bush had done cutting funding to the levies there for the last 6 years so I'm making a separate post to explain what is now coming to light.

I wish all you in Miss. Louisiana N. Carolina, and all other effected areas, the best of luck :love: I was in the French Quarter before I left to Australia.. great memories there.
