Hmm.. Interesting Dilemma...

So ive just been speaking to someone on ICQ who has an interesting dilemma, do they invest money in exclusive content for a few new sites they are working on or, do they invest money in some high-end designs?

I think if i had to make the decision i would go with the exclusive content myself purely from a business standpoint and there being a lot more ways to profit from exclusive content than high-end paysite designs.

What would you do if you were in the same position of this guy, choose to invest in design work or, choose to invest in exclusive content?

High end design work is cheaper than exclusive content, I would start with a really high end design “that is updateable” then more on to the exclusive content, but that’s just me.

content will usually bring the traffic to your site and content closes the deal. While a good design can add to the professional look of a pay site nothing beats niche specific, high quality exclusive content for increasing the bottom line.

Definately content, exclusive is a big draw when marketed right, designs come and go and get dated, no matter how much they cost or don't cost.. new techniques and styles are always popping up, so content for me, better bang for the buck:luke:

i know sites with bad tours that don't sell, even with good exclusive content.

before answering this, i'd have to see his tours. it's possible he could get okay designs - if he needs them - for not much money and still be able to pay to shoot most of the exclusive content he wanted.

also - and i hate to be disagreeable here - the biggest str8 programs always go for a tour that makes people join. and honestly, they make the biggest money. so doing both might make him sales from better tours AND retention.

btw, as far as making several sites - why not do what some of the biggest players in gay and straight are doing? make ONE really really good site. if he has the budget to make several sites, he could get off to a really good start making one or even two great sites with exclusive content AND high end design.

Don't get me wrong... nice looks really help a lot when selling something but at the end of the day you're not buying the package, you're buying the product.

Well hate to disagree, but what we sell is fantasy, and most people can not pick out what is exclusive or not “unless you tell them” but they can tell a good and appealing design in the niche they like. Sometime I really think most people do not understand what we do is sales foremost, and everything else is just to keep members.

This is the same mentality that some in our community have. They are the ones that blast out large amounts of sites with recycled content and one page tours and network with other sites and programs that do the same.

A good movie stands the test of time whereas a hyped up hollywood clone will be a flash in the pan, the same goes for porn sites, for the most part.

Max people are not buying the package, they are buying the product. If all people wanted was the package then there is no need for the product. Adult websites are selling a product first and foremost, adult content.

You can have a very simple, inexpensive, very effective web design and kick ass content, and be very successful (trust me I know).

It's easy to update a site design, content is an investment that is a one time deal for each video. Do you understand what I'm saying? You don't have to agree, I just want to make sure you understand.

i tend to agree with that. id say split the budget on decent content from a smaller provider with less customers, and a decent design which doesnt have to cost the earth.

I know the content i speak of is harder to find but it is there, and a there are some great designers who dont charge the earth. the other investment needed is time, to shop about and find the best deal.

I do know what you are saying, but the content in the tour/outside is very limited

I was just saying its better to start with a really good sales tool, now I never said good content is not important, but sales has to be above even that. If you have the sales you can go out and get more or make more content, but with out sales you only have the content and no money. I would never say content is worthless its #3 on my list, but even with 20 year old content if you have 1 & 2 you will be ok, but with the best content in the world if you do not have good 1 & 2 you are fucked

(1) Traffic
(2) Convertibility “tour”
(3) Content

What we where supposed to be talking about is really high-end, large well made professionally tours, not this stuff that look like some guy in a garage made over a week-end, spent a whole 600$ on it, or cranking out tours that look more like ½ page ads than members sites. I look at a web site like a book, I know people say don’t judge a book by its cover, but you know most people do. If you want to sell a book you had better have really good word of mouth about that book “like its been around 20 years or something” or a cover that will make someone pick it up off the shelf. You can have the hottest guys in the world, but if they are inside a password protected site and all you can see is a crap tour with a few hot guys in square frames with a little text not many people will ever pay to see what’s on the inside and to get people to join sites it what we do, or should be doing.

I know that it has worked in the past for a few site that have photographers running all over the planet, that also BTW give really good Bios in the tours about the models to go with a VERY limited design. I just don’t think that is a grate model to try to follow for most people is all.

here is an interesting side to this dilemma thread... I have seen it argued back and forth between different people that crappy designs, both on galleries and tours sell better, and then there is the opposite argument that high quality design lends towards the credibility of the high quality of the site as a whole, content included.
Both arguments are valid but IMO when I see a gorgeous thumbnail and then watch a very hot video geared towards a fantasy I have, I want to see more.. page layout be damned show me some flesh!

but truly bad tours don't show flesh. truly bad tours are bad tours ;)

if you don't know that wonderful movie is playing in that terrible theater, you sure wouldn't bother to go there. and if the theater has a bad screen and awful sound, it may not be a rewarding experience.

I mean the question being put is does a person spend a shit load on exclusive content or on a super duper site design. That's the question, now where does it say that if the person spends the cash on content he is going to settle for a crap design? :offtopic:

While I'd agree that if the person spends a small fortune on exclusive content then buys a shit design, he/she is pretty lame and it won't be to their advantage, but lets give the person some credit for having brains, as they are trying to choose where to invest the bulk of their capital into.

Sort of like going Christmas shopping. You naturally will try to spend the most on something special for your special partner, but does it mean you forget keeping enough aside for the others you have to get gifts for? I don't think so.

the question was whether to

so actually this is a one or the other question. my answer is both. i feel that there is no reason to choose one or the other.
