Debate - Do Porn Sites Kill The Fantasy

So we watched The Life Of David Gale a couple of nights ago and during the movie was a scene where he was explaining the psychology of 'fantasy' and that actualy started me thinking.

If a fantasy is something that we all crave even though we know we can not really expect to get it and, if we do acheive it, it no longer becomes fantasy but reality which then kills the fantasy itself.

So my question is this..

Do porn sites end up killing a surfers fantasy and, do you think this could be the reason why many surfers are no longer signing up to join paysites?

Afterall, if you have a surfer looking to find pictures of naked school teachers for example, and you deliver them a site catering to their fantasy... why would they stick around? The fantasy has now become reality.

Should we be building paysites that only give out so much content that fulfills the average surfers fantasy when they join to actually KEEP them recurring?

Personally i have thought about this for a couple of days and i honestly think we should be.

How do the rest of you feel about this?

i don't think we're killing the fantasy. the members aren't living the fantasy, only seeing pics and videos of it. seeing guys being tied up isn't the same as being tied up yourself or tying someone up.

if their fantasy was strongly enough a part of them that they would join a site catering only to THAT fantasy, pay month after month, and would go back again and again, they are pretty involved in that fantasy.

But the whole definition of a fantasy is something that is impossible (or extremely unlikely) to acheive.

Surely if they can see their 'fantasy' in images and movies when it comes to porn that makes it a possibility?

Im just throwing ideas around at the moment but im considering throwing a new site up with a limited access members area to see if it actually does have any effect on th members staying or going.

maybe it depends on what you mean by a limited member area. many sites have limited member areas. they're the sites that don't retain. ars had limited trials - the guys quit in droves. socalcash has limited trials - but they're limited differently. people join the monthly quickly to get the rest - they aren't satisfied with the smaller version.

people who fantasize about jobs or careers often use those fantasies to fuel them further. i fantasize about how i would decorate my house and what that house would be like. also i have never had a sexual fantasy that i did not fulfill at some point.

also many men into porn aren't into fantasy, they're acting out an addiction. how many addicts of any type do you know who are willing to settle for less than all?

the sites i promote on revshare that have the best retention all cater to ONE niche, and have MASSES of content for that niche. more than you could surf if your surfing were only recreation. more than you could surf if it were obsession.

maybe because most people don't fulfill their fantasies, they can live them vicariously without threat by joining our sites...

My fantasies are constantly changing...

When I was in my teens just having sex was a fantasy - then in my 20's -- my fantasy was to have a 3some.. after a few 3somes -- group sex was the next step.. after that.. group sex while other guys were watching .. which in my early 30's led to videotaping myself and my partner.. . etc.etc

Now what? I find I am getting into watching others having sex... so, I suppose there's the other side of the coin to explore.. and who knows after that. Sex is only as limited as your imagination..

Sex is an exploration of ones self and their partner(s).. porn can never replace the actual physical act of being with someone..

I don't think porn kills a surfer's fantasy.. I find it just gives me ideas.. and yes, it's a nice release -- when there's no one else around to explore with ..

But I hope I never get to the point in my life where watching a few videos online fulfills all my fantasies. And if I ever live to be 70 (hopefully, with lots of botox in hand) I'm sure I come up with a few new twists along the way.

Agreed although to be honest im sure there are some surfers who do find porn as a replacement for real people in fact, there are even machines now that plug into PC's and get surfers off while watching porn which i find highly amusing to some extent and highly strange t the other lol

You see thats what i cant seem to get my head around, again it goes back to if a fantasy is supposed to be something that would never actually happen then i agree it can give the surfer some sexual ideas however, by getting those ideas and putting them into reality doesnt it come back down to.. been there, done that.. next?

I don't believe they do. Porn is a mental stimulant, it's not the actual action. So in your example of school teachers. The fantasy would be to have sex with the school teacher, not see pictures of one. I dream of having a villa in spain, seeing pictures of one doesn't satisfy me and make me say "Ah that's boring".

As for limited content on a site, I doubt it would work because of the competition out there. If you see a site that says "200,000 pics" and one that says "Start with 50,000 pics and we'll add more pics every month!" the surfer will say bye bye and go with the 200,000.

I also don't think that a fantasy is something that CAN'T be achieved, I think it can be that, but it can also be something attainable.

i think a good site might be one that stimulates the fantasy, involving the members in what's happening in the video or pics. you can fantasize you are with this person (or people) or fantasize about meeting them, fucking them, or whatever you wish.

Seriously, no. I think porn keeps the fantasy alive. I do not believe it fulfills any fantasy. If anything, it creates fantasies that people may not know they had.

Yes but to some extent would fulfilling your fantasy of 'buying' a Spanish Villa not involve having to 'look' at pictures of them or even seeing them in real person? When you see several of these Villas you are not going to choose all of them but only one.. then your fantasy becomes reality.

The reality of it is.. after a year or two of owning your own Spanish Villa you may then become bored with it and want to move again.

But do you think surfers actually spend the time to bother about how many pics they are getting access to? As Basschick mentioned above, if these surfers are truly into hat fantasy the sheer fact they are able to see even a few pics is somehting that will have them joining surely?

Well by definition a fantasy is something that is impossible to acheive or, at the very least not likely to happen (world peace for example).

Actually Gary and i have spoken about this before, kind of like where one of the models wears a camera around his head and thats what takes the movie as well as having this guy also take the stills content.

Personally i think it would sell great :)

Why wouldnt it deliver?

You tell the surfer they are getting access to a members area.. which they are however the members area withholds any of the money shots on movies and only uses a certain amount of stills.

If they want to see all the action they thy need to 'upgrade' their membership to full.

Its no different in essence to what many of the larger PPS affiliate programs do now with their trial options.. think of it as an upsell if that makes it any better to bear ;)

For example.. AEBN feeds in a members area.. they have upsells attached to them to outweigh the cost of the feeds.. whether you choose to utilize them or not.. it is already happening.

Now what you are saying is you want to give them less for less, then upsell them for more to get more. Basically, you get what you pay for. Not really a novel idea in any market including the adult market. :)

I think perhaps were pushing the envelope, and maybe we are killing the fantasy.

Does anyone remember Sean Patrick live? I remember how my friends and I were all glued to the computer waiting to see what he was going to do, and particularly, waiting to see if we could see him naked.

There were four straight guys who lived together and they had a cam at that time, too. And for a while it was all fascinating. But as soon as we got a couple of looks at SP's dink, we lost interest.

Also, remember when Survivor first aired? It was truly fascinating, but then for me, it petered out after a couple of episodes. And Big Brother was next, and I thought, "Who cares."

When I first got on the Internet years ago, it was amazing that you could just even see naked people. Okay, I've seen naked people, now I want to see naked people sucking, now fucking, now ...

We become desensitized to sex pretty quickly, and once we're used to seeing something, I think we want to or expect to go to the level.

But judging by the rebills I'm seeing, I guess it's not the same for everyone.

Looking at porn is not reality! If I fantasize about a 3some and look at pictures of a 3some, I am still not having a 3some! If anything it gets me thinking and fantasizing more about that 3some where I am actually a participant.

I have a slightly different take on the subject. Porn doesn’t KILL the fantasy; if we do our jobs correctly, porn FUELS the fantasy. First of all, and luckily for all of us, fantasies are not finite in number or scope: if one particular one is satisfied, it will be quickly replaced by another that is already there, lurking in the shadows, to come to the surface or more likely, morph into something even more refined in terms of the ultimate desire. If someone always wanted to go to Hawaii, and a good travel brochure, like our tours, finally got them to take action and assuming the destination was all that it should be (hence having what’s on the tour/brochure actually in the designation/member’s area), that doesn’t mean now that their long term desire to visit our 50th State has finally been met that the person will never travel again – he will either return again because they had enjoyed so much (think recurring) while at the same time, perhaps they will want to try different things while there and/or the interest in another vacation spot will start to develop.

Equally if not more important for all of us, sexuality is not finite in terms of desire either but since the urges are biologically with us all, it’s how we choose to satisfy them that is in a state of flux. If someone has a thing for hairy guys and he joins a site filled with hirsute men, his “type” doesn’t suddenly change after seeing all of the fur. Inside the site, he looked around a picked out his favorite guy and got his yah-yah’s to him a time or 2 or 3 but pretty soon, he starts wishing that guy was a little…shorter, taller, had this color eyes or had a tattoo or wore glasses or whatever. In other words, he is refining his fantasy once the main one has been immediately satisfied. If our members area’s are truly niche specific, he’ll look around to see if he can find that perfect guy AND if we update that member’s area in a timely manner, he’ll stick around to see if his new definition of his perfect man will be added the next time and the cycle begins again. No matter what you like, without the emotional attachment - but on a purely physical level of attraction and desire...nothing is perfect for you for long!
