Ok I'm off to read and answer ;)
It’s actually a long story but I’m gonna tell it anyway - because not a lot of people ask LOLQuote:

Once upon a time in a land far away from where I am now (NJ to be specific) I started pushing porn. And from the beginning, I pushed gay porn. Back then I had no intention of staying in the online porn industry, it was going to be a fast way to pay some bills (and you could make fast money then) and I was going to use what I learned and move on from there…
During the first 3 months of working free sites I started working with Samantha on her click through program. When I tried to promote it to the gay market, I found out that there was no specific place to present it. Now this was 1996 and we really only had YNOT, the Condom Project and Top Niche as the prominent webmaster resources and directories out there. I found a group of gay webmasters trying to create a community named IGGW - The International Guild of Gay Webmasters. At first the guild was an honor to join. At first - so becoming a member was a big deal for someone in porn. I was as active as our local chapter would let me. I would talk to the founders more than the guys running the local. I liked the concept but it wasn’t an easy thing to get off the ground. It soon turned into a power play between chapters and the whole thing fell a part!
Aside from the guild, I found one posting board site that we supposed to be the best gay resource out there. In fact no one posted, nothing was updated and any new submissions made were ignored. I later found out it was online as a joke. The people behind it should have taken it seriously, because I wasn’t the only one trying to get and share info.
So during all of these goings on I helped build an adult site called Gay Wide Web. It was supposed to rival Ab Male and Bad Puppy. But the owner was so homophobic, which I found out after the fact, that it never had a chance at making it. He closed it 3 weeks after opening it. At which time, I bought the domain name from him. I didn’t think I could afford the content or server costs so the site went away (If I only knew). My idea was to build a community site, directories, personals, etc (a site like Planet Out before Planet Out was even online, actually). Since I was thinking on a large scale I thought webmasters who would want info on Gay Wide Web would need a site to look up our guidelines, info and such so I bought the domain Gay Wide Webmasters. (Remember this was before I understood third level domains and dot info sites LOL)
Time marched on and while I was doing my free sites and helping people market their gay sites through email, I started to accumulate my own set of information on the gay porn markets. I put the links on a page and stored it off one of my small sites. I used to refer my friends to it for info. I was also gaining some notoriety for myself because I started the argument on YNOT ‘Gay isn’t a niche; it’s a market. You’ll see.’
In 1999 I got a call from Rick (the original owner of YNOT) about a job selling ad space. So in January 99 I packed it all up and moved to CA. About 7 months into it I realized LA and California really weren’t for me. The East coast was calling me back. So when I was leaving I asked Rick if he thought creating a gay webmaster resource was a good thing. I wanted to do one but wanted his blessing before I did anything. His comment was, “if anyone in this industry could do it, it’s you, Ga.”
That night I went online and bought a link script, a posting board script, had some logos and banners made by my buddy Mike at Webair. Over the next two days I manually input all of the information I had accumulated. I put it all together and had no clue what I was going to call it all. I started searching for name and everything I thought of course was gone. Then I looked at my list of domains and remembered I owned Gay Wide Webmasters. Viola!
So there you have it… the story - from a page of links in a free site subdirectory to what we are today.
The past 5 years have been a trip for GWW and me. The site has evolved, has been rumored to fall, grown again and has become more than I have ever expected it to be. We have the community that I longed for from the IGGW, a site that shares info with EVERYONE and satisfaction that I was, at least one of the firsts that took a gay market resource site seriously.
My best,
Gary-Alan ;)
that was a GREAT story - it really threw me into my time machine 'cause i hit the web in 96, and ynot was where i first got info.
thanks for telling it to us :-) and thanks for creating this great community!
Once again, these are my basic questions, for those that do not apply please skip…also for those of you who are familiar with my questioning, you will see a new question has been created.
How old were you when you came to grips with the fact that you were gay?
Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall?
Have you ever used a Vacuum Cleaner to get off? If so, what brand name vacuum did you use?
Name 3 of your all time favorite movies?
When you pass away, what do you want to be most remembered for?
How many long-term relationships have you been in?
What is your favorite feature on the Male/Female body?
What is your favorite comfort food?
Where were you born?
What is your Favorite all time Memory?
If you were to write a book about your life story, how many chapters long would it be?
Have you ever been to London?
When was the first time you kissed another Guy/Girl?
What is your favorite color?
Do you currently promote TopBucks Gay sites?
123Jason... Here ya go babes ;)
Fav Baskin Robins?
Rocky Road
One superpower...what would it be?
The ability to fly
Who would play you in the movie of your life?
My immediate response is Robert Downey Jr. But if I gain any more weight it’s going to be John Goodman.
What is your favorite part about running this board?
The people that I get to interact with are first and foremost my favorite. Equally I do love it when someone who has gotten something out of GWW comes back and let’s us know – make it all feel worthwhile.
What do you NOT like about running this board?
The personal attacks I’ve receive over the years from people who think I have a ‘know it all’ attitude, then come here and use the resources.
Who in the industry have you NOT met but would like to?
I’ve met A LOT of people over the years – good and bad. I can’t name a person in particular, because all I really want is to meet the people from GWW that I haven’t had the honor of being face to face with yet.
What's it like working with your brother in this industry?
It’s interesting, difficult and wonderful. It’s interesting because I get to see a part of Chris I didn’t in the past. His reaction to his first show was absolutely priceless and something I would never had seen if he didn’t join in. It’s difficult because sometimes I think he forgets when I ask for something to get done it’s not just to inconvenience him LMAO. And it’s wonderful because I would have never bet Chris and I would get a long in ANYTHING (it’s the big brother vs little brother thing). We may have been born and raised in the same home, but we live our lives to very different extremes.
What's it like working with your husband in this industry?
Fabulous and frustrating. It’s fabulous because Lee is everything I ever could want in a partner in both life and business. In business he has incredible ideas, he has the ability to make them happen and he has the balls to go after what he wants (and pisses some off by doing it). Personally, no matter how good or bad a day, week or month has been (and we’ve had our shared of all of them) Lee makes sure I know he loves me. There a lot more good to it too but I’m not getting into all of it here ;)
It can be frustrating because we tend to go in different directions with the same fervor - he thinks we should do something one way and I want it another. AND he has a tendency talk about work when I’m trying to go to sleep. I’m half way to dream land and I can hear him thinking about what we need to do tomorrow.
Favorite part of Shows?
My favorite part of the shows is seeing my friends. I know I should answer getting business done, but most of what we do is done between shows.
What do you NOT like?
The bullshit politics that gets played out there.
What movie do you want to see next?
Actually, I want to see Harry Potter 3
How much will you pay for the shots of my session with Jasun and Don?
I intend to pay nothing; I will to be shooting the video.
How much will you pay for the video of DA and I on the fire truck?
See my answer above ;)
When you see me in Hollywood...what's the first thing you'd like me to do?
Open you arms and get ready for a HUGE Gary hug!
Grower or Shower? ;)
Hi Gary,
Thats an awesome story I have often wondered where your origins were and its nice to now know a little of the history of GWW.
Thankyou Gary for your foresight its great to have a resource like GWW.
And thanks for asking that question BDBionic.
Regards
BentBoy
What's the biggest thing you've ever had in your mouth?
Ivan - my jaws hurt even thinking about him.
What's the greatest number of people you've had sex with at the same time?
Thirteen including me.
If you could make the head of one person explode on national television, who's head would that be?
Fr. Bob. The priest that cornered me when I was 13 and tried…
Have you ridden a motorcycle?
Yes. As the rider, I fell off not soon after I got on. I’m a better passenger. And, I’d love to be a passenger on your motorcycle, Jasun.
Have you ridden a motorcyclist?
YES I ALREADY TOLD YA! LMAO
Have you ever taken a pie in the face?
Actually Yes.
Is today's music as lame as it seems to be?
As far as I’m concerned, yes. I have very diverse music taste and quite frankly I play what I enjoyed in the past. I’m looking forward to something new any day now – it’s all been done before.
If I were to drop a penny off the Empire State Building, would it actually make a round hole in a car roof?
That’s what I’ve been told. But I HAVE tossed a penny off of the Empire State Building and I never saw any emergency vehicles and the like when I got down stairs or any news reports that said a penny hit the ground hard today! Nothing. So from experience I would say no.
Have you ever done it in a public washroom?
Hell yes. The question should be where haven’t I LMAOPIP NO ONE CAN ASK THAT NOW!
Have you ever done it on an airplane?
Yes and it wasn’t easy. Even at my lowest weight I’m still built like a line backer and those restrooms as small!
Have you ever done it in the back seat of a Cop Car?
Not in the back seat… on the hood and trunk.
OK... so would you take me as a DILF model?
Can I just take you? LOL if you’re up to it, babe, I am.
How old were you when you came to grips with the fact that you were gay?
I'm gay? LOL Actually, I came to grip with it at 22 but that was well after I started having sex with other guys.
Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall?
Fall
Have you ever used a Vacuum Cleaner to get off? If so, what brand name vacuum did you use?
***BLUSH*** I did attempt it once when I was 14, but I was too big. It was a Kenmore Canister Vac, btw.
Name 3 of your all time favorite movies?
Auntie Mame (Rosalind Russell is my personal goddess)
The Parent Trap (with Haley Mills, none of those lame remakes)
Imitation of Life (1959 Juanita Moore and Lana Turner - I did like the version with Louise Beaver and Claudette Colbert but it was made in 1934 and totally went against my sense of racial equality)
When you pass away, what do you want to be most remembered for?
That I touched at least one person’s life in a positive way.
How many long-term relationships have you been in?
Two (including my life with Lee). It never really went longer than a week for me, by my choice.
What is your favorite feature on the Male/Female body?
Eyes! The rest is just there. A person's eyes say it all to and for me.
What is your favorite comfort food?
Pork Fried Rice and Ribs.
Where were you born?
Jersey Shitty, NJ
What is your Favorite all time Memory?
Funny, we were just talking about this a week or so ago. When I was 4 years old, we went camping at this state park called Stokes Forest. For a kid from the city this was the like going to the mountains of Montana (it wasn't until years later that I realized that it was about 40 minutes from home). Anyway, it was my family (Mom, Dad, John, Chris and I) our Aunt Carol, Uncle Chet and their children, and my parent’s best friends (Roe and Larry) and their children. As my mom put it, we had so much food we had a tent just to store food. We got there and the Dads and older boys set up the tents, my cousin Robert and I had to stay with the Moms, but it was all so exciting. Leading up to the trip, all my big brothers kept telling me about was how we were going to go fishing. I was all set. I couldn't wait to go fishing. I remember whining that I wanted to fish that night, but it was too late. So off we went to sleep. We woke up very early and it was all I could do to not jump out of my skin for my fishing trip (about 20 feet from where we were). I walked down to the lake and saw smoke on the water. I started to cry. The lake was on fire; and, all the fish were going to suffocate from the smoke. And not one would be alive for me to catch (I had no clue what catching a fish really meant). After the parental laughs and coos my mom explained that it was a mist on the lake and that in a few minutes the sun would come out and the mist would go away. Then I could go fishing.
I don’t know if this matters or not to the question, but I’m going to add it… when I learned to meditate and calm my mind I was asked to chose my favorite natural scenario and the scene I always go to (to this day) is the misty the lake at Stokes Forest.
If you were to write a book about your life story, how many chapters long would it be?
It would be three volumes, with 30 chapters each.
Have you ever been to London?
Yes. Went on business, absolutely loved it. I got offered a job and while I was flying back to the states my boss at the time told them I could not leave and she took it instead.
When was the first time you kissed another Guy/Girl?
Romantically like? LOL I was 6 when I pinned Susan to the coat closet in school and kissed her. And I was 10 when I kissed a guy, his name was Bobby an we were in the same class with Susan btw. But my first REAL serious kiss was with Cristain, I was 13. He later became first long term relationship.
What is your favorite color?
Purple.
Do you currently promote TopBucks Gay sites?
Duh. Look on top of the board! LMAOPIP I do on my surfer sites too ;)

If you could snap your fingers and change from being gay to straight, would you? and why yes or no.
what's your favorite cuss word?
what sound do you like the most? the least?
What do you forsee yourself doing in 5 years, 10 and 20 years from now?
Do you and Lee want to raise a kid or 2?
Do you find it hard to set boundaries on demands for your time?
What do you like to do best for relaxation?
And my standard question: you have the Magik Lamp, rub it and tell us what 3 wishes you'd like granted.
If you could snap your fingers and change from being gay to straight, would you? and why yes or no.
No! To be honest, despite the pitfalls (like prejudice, bashing, misconception about being gay, etc) I enjoy the company I stand with. It has not been easy. But, it has opened me up to experiences and possibilities that I, honestly, think I would have never had if I were straight. My life has been filled with creative, dramatic, flamboyant, extravagant, beautiful people (both gay and straight). I couldn’t wish that away for anything. I could actually go on and on about this. I think you get my drift ;) The bottom line is, I'm happy with me.
What's your favorite cuss word?
Cock-sucking-mother-fucker (hyphens added to make one word LOL)
What sound do you like the most? the least?
The sound of children laughing is my favorite. The sound I despise is the yelp a dog makes when she or he gets hurt (hits me in the heart).
Do you and Lee want to raise a kid or 2?
I know I do LOL Actually the answer is yes. We have discussed it. But I know that rearing a child will be my responsibility. Lee will make a great dad he just doesn’t realize it yet. I watch him with my nieces and nephew and he's great. However, if raising our Labrador is any indication, both daddies will spoil a child raised in this home to the point of rotten. LOL
What do you forsee yourself doing in 5 years, 10 and 20 years from now?
You know I haven't given it much thought since I left corporate America. I made plans for life then. I don’t plan like that anymore. But if I give it a try…
5 years living here in FL working, with better cars in the drive way, a cleaning person and a pool LOL Lee and I raising a child as a married couple.
10 years playing the role of Soccer Dad with a company that runs well without me but still needs me. I’d love to see Lee and I playing ‘proud Dads’ at the school plays and such - with out fear of hard on prejudice.
20 years… I sold GA Media for a trillion and a half, Lee and I were on the cover of Fortune LOL Our baby is getting ready for college and we're all involved. Lee and I are getting ready to go to our mountain house, or our villa in the Caribbean for a few weeks with friends.
Wishful thinking? I hope not.
Do you find it hard to set boundaries on demands for your time?
I can set boundaries? I didn't know that! LOL As that may suggest I have a very difficult time doing it. I need to learn how to say not now. I am getting better but I still have a difficult time with it. Especially when those I have to do it to get all pissy about it.
What do you like to do best for relaxation?
I can relax? LOL Unfortunately, as you can guess from the answer above relaxation time is at a minimum. Even of I'm sitting watching TV I'm thinking about what needs to be done and when I need to get it done by. There are those occasions that I just have to leave the house and get away. Then I walk down to the beach and just listen.
And my standard question: you have the Magik Lamp, rub it and tell us what 3 wishes you'd like granted.
1 - World order. Not just world peace, but a planet where we all understand each other's differences and coexist well (and not an order in a dominating creepy Ayn Rand sort of way).
2 - The knowledge and strength to make as much money as I can without compromise. I honestly wouldn't just wish for money.
3 - When the time comes, that my family (and those I call my family) can pass to the other side content, happy and have no regrets.
Firstly let me say OMG this is a long post and I've only been away for a day and a half!
2ndly the questions.
1. If (I love if questions) you had to select one item of food to consume for the rest of your life what would it be?
2. You're on a desert island, you have lee, a sheep and a goat. who or what do you eat first?
3. Name your ultimate holiday (NB: you have a tema of the world's best administrators in place while you're away).
Cheers,
Allan
Indeedy, is it good to have Brian back,,,I love these threads!
All righty, Chris-Alan,
1) Potatoes: baked, fried or mashed?
2) Potent Potables: beer, wine or liguor?
3) Icons: Judy, Liza, Bette, Babs or Ms. Ross? (In addition to Roz of course)
4) If you could see one disease irradicated from the face of the planet the way small pox was, what whould that be?
5) If you had to list your bio with not words but 5 song titles, which 5 songs would best convey who you are?
6) Your'e the lucky winner of $1000 door prize at your favorite store: what store would that be and what would you sepned the money on?
7) SInce you're my neighbor here in sunny Florida, if you had a vacation hideawy you and Lee could sneak off too every so often, where would that be?
Bass you're welcome ;) Like I said not many people have asked me about this and I love telling it LOLQuote:

thanks for telling it to us :-) and thanks for creating this great community!
We're you an official member of YNOT back then? I remember doing all I could to get enough traffic together to send in so I could become a full member. I always wanted access to the 'scpecial' board HAHAHAHA
My best,
Gary-Alan
GA...I would like to say thank you, for so many things. Thanks for your honesty and candor. Thanks for your strength and perseverence. Thanks for your kindness, compassion, understanding and empathy.
You said that one of your favorite things is when someone lets you know they've gotten something back from this board. Please know that this community has truly provided me, not only with professional connections and business experience, but also with friends, creative outlets, new experiences and a new way of viewing myself and my community that I have found nowhere else.
You also hope when you die to have touched lives in a positive way. I'm certain you know that you have, but you will never know the far reaching extent of influence you have had in the world. None of us will. Drop a pebble.... Gary, I have been on a new journey of self discovery and I'm striving to become a better man, the man I want to be. In no small way, you exhibit many of the qualities I work toward in my own life. Everyone in my life is affected by this, and the people in their lives affected in turn. So please, if you are certain of nothing else, know that you have made the world a better place and we love you for it.
I'm going to be counting on that big GA hug.
:)
1. If (I love if questions) you had to select one item of food to consume for the rest of your life what would it be?
Potatoes just because I can LOL
2. You're on a desert island, you have lee, a sheep and a goat. who or what do you eat first?
If I really think about it, after EATing Lee - I’d have to eat him. I can make clothes from the sheep’s wool; I can get milk from a goat; but all Lee would do is bitch he has sand in his shorts. (Sorry baby I love you!!!!)
3. Name your ultimate holiday (NB: you have a tema of the world's best administrators in place while you're away).
My ultimate holiday is a world tour. Cross the Atlantic on a ship, start in northern Europe and make my way down and across the continents - Europe to Africa to Asia to China and then down the pacific to Japan then onto New Zealand and Australia. And to do this as a leisurely pace, months (if not years) and hold a Canadian Passport while I do it because as an American I’ll get shot on site in some places – for sure.
I'm new here, but I had a few questions :)
Peanut butter: creamy or chunky?
Favorite fast food restaraunt?
Holiday you dread the most?
Telemarketers: Hate them, or sympathize with their situation?
Pepsi or Coca Cola?
That's about it :p
Michael
1) Potatoes: baked, fried or mashed?
Mashed, definitely.
2) Potent Potables: beer, wine or liguor?
Wine – a nice Merlot or an Australian Chardonnay
3) Icons: Judy, Liza, Bette, Babs or Ms. Ross? (In addition to Roz of course)
Bette for me babe.
4) If you could see one disease irradicated from the face of the planet the way small pox was, what whould that be?
This is a tough one, Harlan. I actually had to read it out loud. My first, and immediate, answer is cancer(s).
5) If you had to list your bio with not words but 5 song titles, which 5 songs would best convey who you are?
This is a good one, Harlan!
‘My Immortal’ –Evanescence
‘I Hope You Dance’ – Leann Rimes
‘Rose’s Turn’ from the musical Gypsy (Roz!)
‘I Did It My Way’ -Sinatra
‘Of this Land’ - Clannad
6) Your'e the lucky winner of $1000 door prize at your favorite store: what store would that be and what would you sepned the money on?
I would want it to be Best Buys and I can buy electronics, CDs and gadget.
7) SInce you're my neighbor here in sunny Florida, if you had a vacation hideawy you and Lee could sneak off too every so often, where would that be?
Well since we live down the road from the beach, and tropical is covered I’d say I would love a house in the mountains. Since I’m from NY/NJ I was always partial to the Pocono Mountains; However, Georgia has some beautiful mountain areas and is so much closer LOL.
Peanut butter: creamy or chunky?
It’s creamy for me!
Favorite fast food restaraunt?
Lee and I are trying to diet and you ask this LMAOPIP Actually my all time favorite is Long John Silvers
Holiday you dread the most?
I’ve always dreaded Christmas. And with my aunt dying so close to Christmas last year, it’s going to be even tougher.
Telemarketers: Hate them, or sympathize with their situation?
I really hate them, but I’m the type who will answer questions for survey takers only because they’re not selling me anything.
Pepsi or Coca Cola?
Actually I’ll drink 69 cents cheap Celeste cola if I have to LOL I drink Coca Cola otherwise ;)
With tears in my eyes... Thank you, Jason.Quote:

You've echoed a lot of what I was thinking about Gary and all he's achieved, in life and in business Jason, beautifully said.
... and just wanted to say I'm one of those ripples Gary ... your life IS like a pebble dropped into a pool of water, and I'm glad our ripples merged for a time in their journies.
Okay, I'm very busy and there is sooooo much good reading here. I'm gonna have to check this out over the weekend. But I wanted to stop by and let y'all know I was here. :D

what I need to know about Gary I can learn at the next Father Son banquet in Florida..
hes been so much of an inspiration and assistance to me (*and everyone else) - that it will take a long time to know him
Robert, Thank you! From all the kind words I know when the time comes I can move on knowing I did touch someone's life.Quote:
