It could be a mini resourse site where straight webmasters can go to learn about the many many niches and sub niches that make up the great gay porn universe.

With links to the appropriate affiliate programs for the varying niches.

Great idea... perhaps something about why calling the 'gay market' a niche is in some ways degrading, and also perhaps show some of the conflicting terms and their meanings... you know "myth or fact" type thingee?

I have took the time to search through some threads and read why you guys think it's degrading to call gay a "niche"

Just because you can break down "gay" into different divisions, does not make it true that it's not a "niche"

The reason the word "niche" came about is because the word "porn" is broken down into different parts.. therefore they become niches.

The "straight" niche is broken down into sub niches also, but it's still interacting between men and women.. that is the "straight" niche as in whole.

When you take away the fact that you are marketing towards guys using GIRLS, and substitute guys, then that becomes "gay" niche.. so from there.. you can break it into as many sub-niches as you possibly want, but the fact that the marketing stays towards men by promoting men.

So for straight niche, you can have teens, mature, and what not, but it is directed towards males using FEMALES. For the gay niche, you are focusing on marketing towards males using males.

The word "niche" is a WHOLE and not sub parts. Just because you can break gay into sub-niches, does not mean you call it something else.. it says gay.

From there, the rest comes down to yourself. It comes down to whatever YOU want to call it.

We really just want to help those who care about our community and don't just see them as a commodity right? If not, the Gay market will end up like the straight market a few years from now, saturated to capacity.

Perhaps you can make it a consulting site where you give tidbits but to get the good stuff they hire a Gay market consultant? My .00002 cents worth.

You may have a point Squirt... and for the record, Gay is a market by definition and the sub sections are the niches as they are the targeted focus of the market.. the market being the whole.

but to each their own.

Yes, I have hesitations about giving away the farm, too.

This domain does not have to be for general knowledge. I just want to give people that come in here asking about "the gay niche" someplace to learn... so we all don't have to jump on them and piss them off. I get really tired of trying to explain the whole concept to people :bomb:

I don't think we'd be giving away the farm. Education can only benefit us. If the straight porn producers finally start getting it, they will perhaps start producing more content, which gives us more content to use on our sites and more sponsors to promote.

I'm totally secure in this regard. Any straight webmaster or company who tries to break into the bear market is going to be almost two years behind me. I've learned this niche inside and out and still have a heap to learn about it. Indeed, I have just scratched the surface. So some new guy is not going to be a threat to me.

Furthermore, just because you learn something about the gay market doesn't mean you're going to be an instant success. This market is a tough nut to crack. The sponsors and webmasters are very clicky and very protective of their own and their communities. I posted consistently on this board for about nine months before someone finally offered to put a link from their site to mine. I had my sites up for almost a year before I could get many sponsors and other webmasters to even acknowledge my e-mails.

Some new webmaster is going to have just as hard a time. And guess what? they'll have an even harder time because they're not gay. They don't understand what turns a gay man on, they have to figure out how to write copy, shit, they have to figure out what a twink is and is not.

I say put the site up, jam it full of your webmaster referral codes, and see what happens.

You do NOT just take straight porn and "Subsitute" guys. Straight men and Gay Men are enticed by a completely different thing. THIS is why we get so pissed here.

When a straight company wants to get into the gay market, they very often just "subsitute" guys into their images, their stories and their videos. The result is often not only unsexy but insulting to gay surfers. Why would we want to do business with or promote sites by a company that thinks that they can just take the guys out but leave the sets, the dialouge the camera angles and the mood of a shoot exactly the same?

And CraK, I know you don't realize how much Ire you're raising around here, so I'll tell you that the reason that we get so bugged is that people come here with the supposition that they can tell us how it is, when we've got a lot of experience, and then they get all freaked when we tell then that they're wrong. this is our little corner of the market, and we really do know what we're doing. People would do well to take our advice.

gay is not a niche. there are gay niches.

you don't just substitute the girl for the guy and market to men.

that shows you have 0 concept of what gay guys like or want. that's why 98.5% of straight companies that own gay sites to "cover the niche" suck monkey balls and nobody but a n00b would buy a $40 pass

just like most of the time there's a difference between a straight or gay designer designing a gay site

And indeed this is why I almost exclusively promote gay-only sponsors.

The Blue Loots, Pride Bucks, MANchecks, Hot Desert Knights, Naked Swords, Bedfellows, etc know how to market to gay men. The rest are just trying to make a quick buck.

Unless these guys have a Gay consultant it's pretty hopeless. The Gay market is so complex that even some family members have a hard time making money in it.

I just visited http://gayisnotaniche.com/ owned and published by the uber talented Xstr8guy and was very impressed by the article by Dzinerbear. You guys on are on to something here. Go with it!

All too often str8 producers and promoters of gay porn and gay themed TV shows miss the mark with their efforts. They often end up inadvertently offending the very customers they wish to target because their strategy is flawed and based on misinformation.

In my opinion there is a gay culture that is far more rich and diverse than many are aware of or even acknowledge. I firmly agree gay adult entertainment is a market and not another niche.

As for a mainstream marketing success example, I suggest looking at America West Airlines who targets the gay/lesbian market (not niche) with slightly discounted airfares at http://www.americawest.com/glbt
Of course, the media hyped it up and stirred up some of the religious right protesters. But AWA is sticking to their marketing strategy targeting markets that tend to travel frequently and supposedly have above average disposable income.

I am compelled to correct my previous post where I should have stated GLBT instead of gay market in the Amercia West example. Our gay market is a part of the greater GLBT community.

The more inclusive GLBT title does raise a question though. What characteristics are similar and what are different across gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered markets?
