why do feed providers fuck with their customers?

not just picking on rocky, but honestly dood, your feed is the one that set me off, so im gonna use you as an example...

for a few weeks there was a popup on a PAID feed telling your customers' members that they could win a free membership to your site if they vote at the cybersocket awards for your sites.... but you werent even collecting email addresses.... just linking right to the vote form.

now its a popup for a hotel?? (see below)

what the hell... if a website owner pays for a feed, he isnt paying for feed providers to take his member traffic... not for voting, not for hotels, and certainly not for upsells.

and its not just beachboi... im just picking on him because its what i went to first when i logged in and i got this popup shit... its all kinds of feeds. i see links for sales of videos, upsells to other paysites, all kinds of shit... on feeds that people are spending literally $1000s of dollars a month on.

i'd be fucking pissed to have ANY popup on paid feed - but if i don't get the money for any sales, that's worse.

It's tacky.... But tons of people try to do it. Anything from chat bots to pop up windows. Guess they forgot about all the blockers now and SP2 automatically blocking them anyway. :specs:

Well not all plug-ins are like that. There are some companies that do produce them without any of the sneaky stuff people try to get away with.

Then again, it partly the website owner (webmaster) respocibiliety to check the content they lease 1-5 times per month. (weekly is better) If for no other reason to make sure everything is working correctly and they are getting what they pay for.

Yes, that would piss me off. If you're paying for it, then why let someone piss off your members by popping them and trying to milk more sales out of them (YOU'RE already paying ..) or just make them cancel?

A members area is what they PAY for to get away from all of that crap. I would jerk that feed so fast and tell them exactly why in not so many words.

as far as no gay, I currently have 2 new sites I am shooting right now... one is to be a solo, and the other a rough blowjob site... all exclusive, all same high quality but with even better quality content

When I left J&A, got busy doing some encoding work for platinum bucks and other companies while I was working day and night to launch www.itsyourporn.com last year in jan...

now we're 1 year later, got a great base of good clients, people seem to like what I do with the pluggin, life is good :)

It's not just feeds. It's like this in the AVS world, too. People put up galleries, follow the rules for the first month, then presto! they dump the gallery and redirect to their paysite.

We learned a long time ago NOT to do that.

In fact....we improved upon it. We sell feeds "with the option" of 1on1 cam upsells. You simply check it in your admin area and choose it if you want. This gives the webmaster the choice.

I agree dwgy.....its shitty!! And its happening more and more. And I really don't like it when they dont tell us about it and we are the ones paying for the feed!

Feed providers have pulled that on us twice now. Both times we cancled without pause. Luckily there are lots of providers who are ready to take up the slack :)

Unforunately, I didn't even notice that myself and we are a customer or Rocky's. I agree that is wrong. My customers are not yours and you have no business selling anything to them without my knowledge or consent.

I can say this because at BoyContent.com we do manage and resell content feeds - BoyzFoto and CitiBoyzTheatre. We would never do this to any of our customers.

First things first:

1) Free membership: That was an oversigt on my part. I had been wanting to collect emaila ddresses but never followed thru on it. I am giving out a free membership to a random chatter as a result, whther they voted or not.

2) The hotel site is not stealing traffic. I made an arrangement with them to put the banner up on our members area in trade for allowing us to use their facilities to film our new dvd. They have bent over backwars for us and I am repaying them in a small but effectual way. The ad was put up yesterday and has not yet been removed from the plug-in product yet.

So, Dale, thank you for bringing it to my attention.

Not sure.. I just fixed the problem, though. It was a total oversight on my part. I'm sorry if it caused any trouble. The pop-up is supposed to be inmy member's areas, only, and not in the plug-in feeds. I don't regularly check the plug-ins, so I was unaware that it was still up until it was pointed out today. My apologies.

thanx for fixing it rocky, im sure the customers are glad. i didnt realize your paysite shares the exact code that your feed does. definitely can see how the popup would slip into the feed tho.

i've been using NikKay's feeds - and you know what i like about 'em? the entire page is generated from your own code. if you want an upsell, you create exactly what you want. their own page code doesn't come into it at all.

you can do the same thing with hostedcotent.com but their gay selection isn't all that, and their template system is not anywhere near as easy to figure out.

with some of the bs happening with plugins, ya gotta appreciate that kinda thing.

anyone know any more plugins that use your own headers and footers and colors?

Not all webmasters give permanent access to their sites in order for me to check their plug-ins once a week, or even a month. Generally, if there is a problem, the members of the pay-site licensing the feeds will complain to the webmaster, who then complain to me. That's when I fix the problem. Since this problem was never reported to me by any webmaster until just tonight (and not even reported to me directly), I had no idea the problem existed. Once I found out about it, I fixed it. I have a company to run, and my top priority is not to check on the plug-in sites and micromanage the performance on my clients plug-ins. If there is a problem, or if there is something that is causing an issue, then they will let me know about it, and I will fix it.

Thank you for the suggestion, but I have my own way of running things and, despite a glitch here or there (such as this incident), it seems to be working fine.

im not 100% sure its up to site owners to police their feeds every waking minute of every day in order to stay on top of any problems that may develop.

we have some webmasters flat out refuse to give us passwords to their sites to check the feeds. This makes it very hard to effectivly check or diagnose a problem if one of their members complains to us that they are having problems.

seems to me that one of the most important things a feed provider could do is to keep track of the feeds and how they work on their webmasters' sites. to do this, they could make their own dummy paysite member area with .htaccess and link to the feeds just like their webmasters do - then check them every day.

after all, if people are paying you for a product, they shouldn't have ads - hotel or otherwise - on it that they don't even get a commission for.

collegeboyslive - some plugins won't even let you use their paysites without an active un/pw. why would they refuse? do they think you're planning to put it on a password trader board? :wacko:

I can't speak for everyone else, but we use individual folders for each plug-in client. This allows the client to pick and choose what they would like to have on the page: IE a banner of their on our content that only their customers can see. For this reason alone, we cannot just have a "dummy paysite" area, because everyone has a different product. And that's not even getting into the logistics of different packages. Not all sites have the same package. Some have more options (for a higher price) and some have a basic package.

As I have stated earlier: the webmaster does not have to check to see if the plug-in they are licensing is working, because their customers will do it for them. Any time there is a problem, unhappy customers will email. Webmasters, not knowing there is a problem, will in turn email me. I will then fix the problem.

Many times, customers will email me directly, since I have a support email address at the bottom of the main page on every plug-in. It has worked perfectly well, so far, and I expect it will continue to do so in the future.

Zak... I feel ya on the "webmaster password" thing. I run into the same problem.

(PS: another alternative would be to remove the .htaccess on each plug-in client folder and check for problems... however, that creates even more of an issue if there is an .htaccess problem that re-routes their users to the main page of the product... something that has happened to us before.)

the average paysite that doesn't have a more personal approach might - might - here from 1:15 - 1:30 regarding a plugin with a problem. that is if it doesn't play.

a lot of guys hate popups, and they simply quit. i've worked with two programs where we emailed all cancelling members. there was a similar situation, and no one wrote to us because they all felt 100% sure it was our plugin. they were offended. it took days - and a higher than normal level of cancels from new members - before one member wrote an angry email saying we never used to have popups, and letting us know that he cancelled because of it and that he was very disappointed we should do such a thing.

if you had "dummy paysite member area" with all the products linked, you could easily go to each page it was linked to each day. seems to me it's not our members job to police the member area - but maybe that's just me.

Okay call me thick here but what does it matter which feed the customer gets or what banners they add? I'd say simply dumping the feeds into one dummy paysite to check your end would make perfect sense and insure the quality of service.

I'd also say that waiting for a customer complaint is just not good business sense. Upset customers isn't fun, and most businesses will tell you that for every complaint that they get means that roughly 10 upset customers simply walk away without complaining.

Now don't get me wrong, it is your biz model and you do what you feel works for you, just seems to me that being aggressive in preventing complaints would make better customer service than after the fact. Sort of like closing the barn door after the animals have all left.

No, no, no... don't get me wrong. After reading the explainations of your "dummy site" to include all of the feeds and client links on one page, I actually like the idea and am working on a way to implement it.

I agree about the angry customer logic: 1 angry customer = 10 angry customers. I have been in customer service most of my career and I know that is truer than true.

SO we are now working to ensure preventative measures to assist in the running of the feeds to make sure that problems (such as the one brought up by Dawgy... not specifically against me, I need to remind everyone who has been attacking me... but against everyone who uses pop-ups in plug-ins as a whole) are solved before they even begin to be "problems".

I have never had a problem with Rocky and his feeds and he has literally bent over backwards for my company. I started in this business in 96 and honestly have never had a company help me out so much. I stand behind Rocky 100% and I really think it sucks that something that was a problem was never brought to Rocky's attention by email, phone or anything. It was brought on the boards by someone who isn't even a client of his attacking his company and causing him to lose customers. I had a problem with the AEBN feeds awhile ago and contacted them again and again and the problem wasn't fixed and other webmasters were having the same problem so that is when it becomes necessary to post on the boards. Rocky explained and corrected the problem but he still lost clients because of it. I really think this type of problem should be addressed by contacting the owner and then maybe posting on the boards. I trust Rocky and his feeds 100% and don't even feel the need to check the feeds.

mark, i disagree. i this webmasters should know if there is a feed that might be popping up ads in their member area. if a content provider isn't able to keep track of their feeds due to outside elements, i think potential users should know that.

i could be wrong, but i think dawgy is a customer of that feed.

rocky may be a very nice guy - i don't know him - but this was about something that can affect people's businesses. it's not about friendship or personal loyalty. as it was, this thread allowed us to help him find a solution to what i perceive as a problem.

if everyone trusted rocky so that they never checked his feeds, no one would know there were hotel popups on this feed. accidents happen.

i am mistaken - dawgy is does not use that feed in his member area.
