We're Leaving The Adult Business

At some point in the next 5 years however, i wondered how many of you folks had 'exit strategies' in place for leaving the adult industry? Have you even thought about it?

I know as a company we have slowly been branching out into non adult for a year or so now and we're about to be bringing some non-adult things in to the adult side of our business and, at the same time, we're taking some of the concepts we hav had success with in adult to the mainstream side of the web which, if implemented properly, will enable us to have the 5 year exit from adult.

So have you thought about your exit plan for when you decide to leave the adult side of the web or do you think youll always work adult?

You better be playing with me! I'll probably be out in 5 years also. Adult and Web Design has mainly been supplementary income for me and my payrates at my normal job are increasing rapidly so in 5 years I definitely won't need the supplementary income anyway.

I'm slowly starting my exit stratagy as well, I won't say that I will ever be 100% out but I'm working on making my involvement on a day to day basis less and less.

Kinda funny. Our adult business was a backup exit strategy for a business we had started as an exit since our other 2 businesses were starting to die.

I never want to leave the adult industry, because I really enjoy what it is that I do more than anything I've ever done.

I love the editing that I do, and although people always ask me ifI want to branch into "Legitimate" editing, I have to say "no".

I love making videos that make bodies look good, and putting together shots.. narrative is less important to me than composition.

So...there you go.

I'll run GWW if you don't want it, but I never want to get out.

Okay some interesting replies so far however, what if you have no choice but to leave the adult industry?

If online porn was suddenly made illegal next year, what would you do?

My exit strategy is to start investing in Real Estate. I refinanced my house and I'm now shopping for a two unit building.

Averaged over the past 4 years, I made more in equity from the one house than I did working. With two buildings, I should be able to refi both in two years to buy a third, and so it goes.

BTW Godfather II and III was about the Corleone family going legit. It could happen.

Yep we're in the same boat.

In the last 5 years the cost of our house (if it went on the market) has almost tripled what it was purchased for :)

They aint making anymore oceanfront property in Florida ;)

I would do something with real estate and an idea I have had with a non adult site for awhile. I would also work on my video game websites more and also do some dating sites.

I've started a tax-exempt corporation a few months ago to help the poor in the Philippines. When I was there last I was deeply saddened by their condition. I've been shopping my butt off every week and sending supplies to a friend I have there, and he disperses them among the needy in the barrios of Angeles City. Since U.S. Clark Air force base closed down there a few years back, people in that region have become desperately impoverished. So I'd put 100% effort into that, hire a grant writer to get government and private grants and expand services overseas.

In the states I want to start a non-profit that creates Gay safe houses nationwide for GLBT people in need of a place to stay to get back on their feet.

Like many people, I started in this industry because it was easy money compared to a "normal job". I love it now though. Contrary to all expectations, the people I work with in porn are some of the nicest and most trustworthy people I know. I can't imagine doing anything else.

Same here. I've made some great friends in this business and I'll always have a hand in it. We're working on a few mainstream projects to diversify our revenue, not as an exit strategy from adult.

I'm with you on that CA. I've met some of the best and worst people in my life through this industry, and I wouldn't trade the experience for anything.

That said, I've been spending more time on our mainstream products and ventures (You will be seeing more soon LOL). I have to say if I was doing this soley on the people factor, I wouldn't be doing it. LMAO

Excelent! 90% of non adult webmasters I ran into are bona fide COCKSUCKERS and I don't mean it in a good way.

I will be getting a degree in Psychology in may (hopefully) and I plan to return to school to earn my MBA so I can go into Marketing with my psy background. While useful in the porn industry I would also be useful in many straight jobs.

As an ISP since 1997, we got involved doing some business with another ISP that was starting up some adult sites. They didn't have a webmaster, so we designed their original adult sites.

We had severed our ties with the other company and later developed our own small adult site to enhance our income. We grew by Word of Mouth at first simply by providing our standards of excellent customer service IMO. As of last year, we have seen our site (now sites) grow even more. We just started a campaign with Overture and seeing some returns.

Long story short, we didn't and still don't intend for our adult sites/biz to become our mainstream biz. The income is being used to put my partner through a private university where he is taking courses for designing and creating games. Once he graduates, I don't see ourselves continuing in the adult industry. It simply isn't our desire to become a "porn king".

But I'm glad you brought up this subject. It's something that others do need to be thinking about... both reality and the future.

Leave this business? Geez, I just got here a year ago. Actually, I have no intention of leaving. I love what I do. It's been a long time since I've been able to say that. And as to the hypothetical situation of this business becoming illegal, then I'd probably start working for the free speech coalition or the ACLU to fight the oppression.

This is a great business with even better people. No exit strategy for me.

Hi, pretty new here but I would have to say that i don't have an exit strategy, however, I do have an expansion policy and my business plan includes multiple businesses not all are internet related and not all are adult, that keeps me well-rounded and pretty much protected from any legislation.

Also I am not a US citizen nor do I host exclusively in the US so I am pretty safe when it comes to American obscenity laws :)

This is my 21st year in the adult industry. Its been my most steady investment over the years.

I can't imagine ever leaving. Besides the money, lots of great people, and lots of fun.
