UKs new plans for 'opt in' access to porn

The Daily Mail reported that UK's biggest internet providers BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media are working together to force a manual opt-in access to online porn sites.

Subscribers to BT, Sky, Talk Talk and Virgin who do not opt in will have no access to internet porn. The breakthrough is expected to be announced by the Prime Minister as the centrepiece of a crackdown on the sexualisation of childhood.

The article says this new system is being introduced after public uproar over an X Factor show which featured soft-core dance routines in the finals last year.

UGH!!! This is NOT what we need :thumbsdown:

OK this isn't as bad as it was first reported. I just found another article on ZDNet UK that seems to be timestamped a bit later that says:

Despite reports to the contrary, the code of practice does not mean the ISPs are automatically blocking pornographic sites, and customers who wish to see such content do not have to ask their provider for permission to do so.

The blocking feature is not new. All four ISPs already offered the controls, and some of their users already have the feature turned on. The only change is that customers can no longer sidestep the activation decision. BT said it plans to remind existing customers that they can activate the parental controls if they wish.

I bet they'll just love dot xxx. :D

How do their content filters work? Are they as effective as email spam filters or how do they decide if a website is adult or not.

I mean if a site is porn, it's pretty obvious, but keeping in mind the hypocritical anglo-american puritanism, I'm quite sure a lot of borderline, educational or even absolutely non-adult sites are being blocked if there are already "public uproars" over some softcore dancing scenes. :rolleyes2:
