    US2257 & Yahoo/MSN Groups

What implications do you guys think it will have on the large networks who offer groups for self postings etc.

Does it effect them, and if so will it close the groups down ?

    Greetings:

I see that you're from the UK? Let me explain something to you that all Americans already know and understand:

No, of course it won't effect Yahoo/MSN Groups. It also won't effect Google and their image search feature, even though they store the thumbs on their own servers.

    Why?

Because they all have lots and lots and lots of money. US laws don't apply to them. It's how our country works!

    Greetings:

Yes, 2257 only applies to US Citizens directly, although foreign webmasters will certainly be feeling the industry-wide ramifications that will come from it.

Yahoo and MSN have nothing to do with the content posted by users. They didn't put it there. They don't sell it. They don't profit directly from it. 2257 is for commercial use of the content.

Besides, the parts of 2257 that would effect them even if it did are many years old. They would have closed the groups long ago.

I don't think the 2257 requirements would apply to Yahoo/MSN as they provide the "web-hosting services" for the group and do not manage the content. But it is commercial for them as they place ads in the groups' content. I'd guess that the operators/moderators of the groups better follow 2257 if they do any promotion of their commercial websites in their groups.
