www. changing to xxx. for porn sites?

Now, this is just something i heard today. So im just looking to get feedback or maybe some light shined on it. Porn sites will have to change over to XXX. instead of the normal WWW. has anyone heard anything about this?

Mike brough up the point that if this was true, parents could then block all sites that are xxx. and that would block porn from their children (or at least cut it way down).

So, is this just a rumor?

ICANN, the internet's governing body, approved the new .xxx top-level domain, which will likely be available to webmasters later this year in addition to the domains already available, like.com, .net and so on. There will be no mandatory requirement to get a .xxx domain.

There has been a few discussions on this here, you might do a quick search and read up on it. Right now its voluntary, but ... well if you read the other threads you'll get the idea of why some oppose this TLD censorship.

This was tried back in 2000 or 2001 as I recall and got shot down. Rumors have it that the government or some body of legislation would like it to become mandatory for adult websites.

There are Pro's and Con's to everything. As for protecting their children, well, I don't swallow that one at all.

Minors are getting into adult sites now, even those that require credit card. It's easy for them to get their parents credit card (give us a break).

It was a minor as I recall that hacked into government computers or something along that line.

Let's face it, if they want in, they're going to get in!!!!

It might have good intentions, but is going to be 100% or even 90% effective, heck no!

We'll just have to wait and see how it "pans out".

there would be a big difference between a domain changing from www.fraternityguys.com to xxx.fraternityguys.com (on the one hand) and having a new domain called fraternityguys.xxx

The first one you could, if you wanted, implement right now; you can have a website at, for example, http://yourmothersucks.boyfunk.com and that would resolve fine if it were implemented correctly by your hosting provider (or by you, if you're doing your own DNS)

The second one is an entirely new domain name space, similar to .com, .org, .info, etc.... and will involve another clusterfuck of everyone scrambling to buy those domain names when the registrar makes them available. From what I hear, they won't be cheap ($60-80/yr vs $7-20/yr for current domain registrations) and who knows if they will honor existing tradenames and trademarks... not to mention, of course, it could be the first step in restricting adult sites to one section of the 'net.

I for one won't give up our .com I don't think. As an ISP, we can put up a notice on the home page and have a redirect button, kind of like Click Here to Enter and have it take them to the new .XXX domain. I don't see where that would be a problem or any laws against doing that.

As for gobbling up the domains, I would assume that there will or at least could be some sort of law that the governing body could or would implement all existing adult site owners to have first rights to the new .XXX

    It's just my 2 cents.
