Who Makes The Final Decision?

LOL i have just had a really weird phone conversation with a rep for some company selling business advertising for one of the local community rags we have here...

Anyway a long story short, about half way through the conversation this lady asked me who makes the final decisions on business related purchases and, generally, its Gary or I and, as he isnt here it would have been this time.

So i tell her we arent interested in buying any ad space at the moment and she then proceeds to ask if Gary would feel the same way about it as i did to which i said, yes he would.

She then goes on to explain how i dont know that for certain and that she should send me a heap more information in the mail because Gary probably would like to see what they were offering and would most likely agree to taking out a small one-off ad as a test LOL

I just couldnt beleive how this chick was giving me the heavy sell on someone she knows nothing about LMAO

Anyway i finally managed to get rid of her and started thinking about some of the stuff she said and, in all truth, even though i know i was right in not placing an ad, it made me think about how many of us actually do have the final word when it comes to business decisions like that, do you have final say or, is there someone else you have to speak to first?

Funny, I had one of those yesterday but from a bank card company... they sure are getting more pushy it seems... but in this household I have the final word, and that is that... course if the other half disagrees I still get the final word, i just wind up sleeping alone... :cry:

At that point I would have said "You know, there might have been a chance that we'd consider your publication in the future, but you just blew it. I don't like pushy people and I *never* buy from them, so please add me to your do-not-call list and don't contact me again."

i would have asked to talk to her boss, and told him/her that if i'm treated this way again, i'll make sure none of my friends will be advertising there - as i surely won't be!

When it comes to decision making I'll always take the final decision. If necessary I will consult with the relevant people but ultimately I own the business and if push comes to shove my say is final, oh and it helps to be the only signatory on the bank account too

I had someone ring at work the other day trying to sell me toner cartridges - she went through this whole spiel about how she had put aside 12 cartridges that were on sale for me and just wanted to know the delivery address, I then responded with "I know this is a stupid question, but could you tell me how you managed to put 12 toner cartridges aside for me when a) you don't know what printer models I have b)whether in fact I own any laser printers c) whether I have authority to purchase said toner cartridges and d) why the hell I would purchase a toner cartridge from somone who cannot answer any of these questions."

I got a mumbled response and she said "Thankyou for your time" and I've never heard from them again

I've been taught a lot of different high pressure sales techniques. The worst was when I tried to sell memberships to a fitness center.

We were taught that when you pitch a I woman to buy a membership and she says, <b>"I have to ask my husband"</b>, our response was supposed to be, <b>"Did you ask your husband if it was okay to get fat, too?"</b>

Needless to say, I quit that job pretty quickly.

when it comes to the final decision, any potential customer on the phone has it - they can hang up. that's why it makes sense to be diplomatic and polite.
