    2257 and the Media

I am wondering why you do not see anything about the 2257 in mainstream media? Is this because they do not know about this? I am going to hope that is why..I think we should all call to let them know that this is a very important story and the people need to know about this. It is going to put many people out of jobs in this country thus fucking with the unemployment rate and the economy (more!)

I believe people would want to know that we are being targeted by our goverment. We are tax paying citizens and we do follow the law and we are against child porn ( and this law has nothing to do with that!)

Please lets all make calls to the media in our cities and get this out there. lets not rollover and play dead!

Do I sound like a crazy freak?? I swear I am not!

I've been wondering the same thing, but here's the reasons I believe it's not picked up by the mainstream media.

-The rules are too complicated to spell out in a soundbite.
-The number of webmasters involved is too small to be significant.
-Most people, even porn fans, believe that porn is already illegal.
-We're all too busy trying to save our own asses that we literally don't have time to put out press releases to the media.
-Publication schedules of magazines takes about 3 months to hit the stands.
-Media doesn't do investigative reporting anymore. If it's not shoved down their throats by publicists, they miss it.
-Rule of thumb in news, "If it bleeds, it leads." Until 2257 involves a controversial celebrity or dramatic video footage with a white Bronco, it won't get airplay.

We as an industry haven't taken a stand yet. We have rolled over and played dead for the DOJ. Not one company has come forward to fight this in court. Thus, you have no news to cover. Until there is an actual case, I doubt there's going to be any media covering it.

I cleaned up the front end on my site. That's all I'm doing. If I'm not compliant then I will see them in court. I've got alot to say on the matter and I'm not going to back down to the DOJ. If they want a fight, then that's what they've got.

On some of the surfer boards that I belong to, people are only just now finding out about it because their favorite sites are going down or disappearing or removing personals or whatever.

    They're freaking out.

They're all saying "What can we do?" or "Is this legeslation presently before congress?" and I'm saying "Nothing" and "No.. you're too late..it's alreayd passed and you're screwed.

Ok I do understand all that but if we just say that is the case and not even try to get the media involved then they are getting their way.

It is true people have no idea this is happening who are not in the adult business. I am sure they would want to know! So many jobs are going to be lost now. I hope a shit load of people go on unemployment so they can see what they are doing.

I believe it is an important story and I am getting it out to all the media that I can now. I know I am just a little fish in the big sea but this is so fucking scary. We live in Nazi Germany!

I also think the big companies arn't really fighting because they know that they are not going to be the target as much as the small guys.

Thanks for reading my post and responding I appreciate the feedback!

I think you hit the nail right on the head. I believe that larger companies want to see these new regulations enforced. It would be a great way to eliminate alot of the competition from smaller webmasters. I think that's why you never see the "big boys" on the boards. Oh well, welcome to the new america. It is getting unnerving to see this new holy crusade developing.

Well in that case, then just apply the rules of economics. What would happen is a black market appearing to fullfill the demand for adult entertainment.

i saw an article on the front page of cnn the day the new 2257 was passed, and the day after. you don't usually see things in the news after they're new - to the rest of the world, this law protects children, and they've moved on.

I was thinking about that too. If there is going to be a vacuum effect, it will be very short lived. Foreign webmasters are probably going to fill that void very quickly. I don't blame them, I would too.

buck, i agree with a lot of what you say, but i believe involving the media is a two-edged sword. their job is to sell papers or advertising, and more people get involved with a sensational story than the facts.

i picture the media getting involved by saying the porn industry is upset with a law made to protect children. the fact that there was an existing law in place was not really mentioned in the articles i saw, so the media isn't really interested in playing up that side of things so far.

First of all, the news media is never going to be pro-porn. Nor will they cover any story that makes porn look anything but a bad thing.

A study recently found that when guys look at porn involving a man and a woman it triggers something in the brain that signals that there is competition around and sperm counts go up. With all of the couples out there who have trouble conceiving, this should have been in the news.

Then there's the virtual CP case from awhile ago. The mainstream media never stopped to tell American's exactly what virtual CP was. They just implied that the adult industry wanted to make a certain type of CP legal.

2257 is the same thing. It's there to keep ****'s from filming kids. Common sense says it doesn't accomplish that, but the media will report that the adult industry is attempting to remove CP safeguards.

I have to agree with Basschick on this. The media is not what it once was, heck if it even was news. I mean let's be honest, the news today isn't about facts or honest reporting of events, but about selling advertising. The reports are geared towards sensationalism and if you want to see violence, to see lewd conduct turn to the news, not the television programs.

I will get keel hauled for saying it but just look at how the media handled the Clinton crap. Too many still believe it was about Clinton having sex, when in reality the issue was that he lied under oath. No one cared about that distinction because the media spun it as republicans out to get clinton for being a sex pervert. That is what sold the media. It is what drives them even more so today.

News is supposed to be about factual reporting of events, not the spin that is todays news media. CNN won't talk about rights of privacy, right to free speech but instead, as Basschick points out, how we are somehow opposed to protecting children.

You are correct Buck, this is reminiscent of Nazi Germany and the selling job they did to gain absolute power over the nation. By finding a button and hammering it home they gained total power, because who would oppose them? The media is not on the side of truth, but on what sells... and if it wasn't, you would never have the likes of George Bush as President nor the many right wing fanatics holding such power as they currently do.

You wouldn't have Presidential Candidates afraid to discuss rights for all as you did with John Kerry who waffled so much on same sex marraige that in the absence of any choice people either stayed home or voted for Bush... because the Media made same sex marraige an issue of sexual orientation, not of equal civil rights and no one wanted to fight the power of the press.

If the adult industry only had a decent PR but when so many within the industry itself considers what they do as dirty, kind of hard to put forward a different face. People for whatever reason equate porn with something dirty, something evil and until that gets changed, I sure wouldnt want the media taking up the case. To me, if anything is truly dirty it is how they so carelessly deal with the truth.

    Just me ranting again.

Publicly, everyone hates porn and no one except the most liberal free-speech advocate will defend it. Privately, most everyone loves porn.

48 Hours Mystery had a show this week about a fine wholesome christian husband that killed his wife and child. They managed to blame the murders on his addiction to internet porn. Before a commercial break they had a blurb that said "Are you or is someone you know addicted to porn? Call 555-5555 for help." GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK!

Maybe if we all pulled our sites offline on the 23rd people would take notice.
