The Blogosphere weighs in on 2257! Boy are they mad about this!!

We're seeing the "chilling effect" in action. Countless non-pornographic blogs and humor sites went dark last night because of 2257. Among them sites on the rotten dot com network. Bloggers are outraged because they're just hearing about this.

This is good news for us!

You know, if everyone who took thier sites down put up a page that simply gave the addresses where people could write to, be it government officials, senators, the DOJ, whomever would get the most impact of it, and tell them exactly how to address the email, or exactly how to write the letter, the people who are affected by this would finally show the government the force by which they stand. Think about it. The number of people who view adult entertainment was to reach into the millions. The problem is that the religious right wing fanatics can announce in thier churches and websites to write letters and cause pressure and they do. The average porn consumer has nobody leading them. They are not going to take it upon themselves to write an email or send a letter. But if they go to their favorite websites and they are all down, and there is a note there saying to email this person, copy this email and send it to this address, don't you think they will? What do you all think?

You know, I saw something online that would let people do this, but can't remember where. You just enter your state and it automatically shows you the representatives you should write to. A 2257 like the one at gapingmaw with a link to this sort of site could get the job done.

Exactly Matt. I don't have the technical knowhow to be able to do this or I would do it myself. Why not gather the proper info and put it up on a site. Then we'll all just spread the word to any websites we see are down, ask them to put it up on thier placeholders. If we can get it up on a million sites and if only a few people who go to each site respond then that will send a huge message.

but most porn surfers want very much to stay anonymous. they don't want people to know they even look at porn... so they won't risk coming out of the porn closet to tell a rep anything.

it's a nice idea, and some people will do it, but i don't think there will be an overwhelming deluge of letters - unfortunately

Even if millions of people complained do you think THIS government would Listen?

I think they would use it as a propoganda tool to the religious right, saying, "look how many bad people be have taken porn away from"....

and i think basschick is right. people surfing porn want to remain private and certainly don't want to come out in a letter declaring they are porn surfers....

I think that must be in the next step of enforcement from the DOJ in the next update of 2257....."in order to prevent children from accessing porn, we will require you to post the name address and birthday of all your members in a publicly accessible area.......open to DOJ inspection during working hours...."

You're missing the point. Non-pornographic humor sites went dark this morning over these regulations and bloggers are shocked and horrified that this could happen without anyone (outside of adult) knowing about it. Read the blogs that are on the link I provided.

Even conservative sounding bloggers seem bothered by the possible impact of these regulations. We have a real world example of the chilling effect here. We should take it and run with it. It also comes on the heals of a Supreme Court ruling that says local governments can seize homes and other property for private commercial development.

We're reaching the tipping point. People are starting to wake up to the fact that the gov't is chipping away at their civil liberties. We have to remember that. This isn't just about porn anymore. It's about freedom of speech and other civil liberties.

    Here we go:

    Congress.org
    http://www.congress.org/congressorg/dbq/officials/

Just plug in your zip code and it gives you a list of representatives with contact info.

That's why we have to shape the debate with a message like the one at the rotten sites.

Here's a post from a blogger who worries that 2257 could interfere with P2P file sharing.

The end of free speech is coming...

Remember all the bad will the music industry created when it tried to stop file sharing. Now imagine all that hostility directed at Alberto Gonzales.

the guys in my sportbike rider's group all suddenly started freaking out today. They're all worried that our Yahoo Group, the only way to communicate easily with 1000 members nation-wide, will be deleted. they're all freaked about not having free speech.. simply joking about the sex going on at our group rides, the semi-nude pictures of us hanging out drunk by the hot tub at our Hotel in Saint Louis Obisbo or Skinny Dipping in Death Valley last year could result in our group getting banned.

    And we'd be fucked.

But at least they're waking up...

Heh! Somebody came up with an 18 USC 2257 protest t-shirt. We should promote these.
