    Panasonic's PV-GS250 looks good

This thread is a follow-up to a recent discussion about these awesome series of camcorders!!!

Bass Chick, if you get a chance to read this, would love your input since you mentioned that you've got one and have been using it for a while now. How are your compressed video clips turning out?

I purchased the PV-GS250 yesterday and it's great to use (so easy and ergonomically sound). I still have the two weeks to decide if I want to keep it or upgrade to the PV-GS400. I'm thinking I might just upgrade after having been to dvspot.com.

Mainly, the reason to go up to the next model (from I'm seeing so far in the reviews) is due to its advanced manual controls, plus some extra cinema features (like 16:9, film-like mode, soft skin, etc.)

It seems like GS400 has won over Sony's comparable model (something 1000--I can't get all these numbers straight! LOL)

What do you guys think? For the purposes of making good, quality video clips for the Net, would going upto the GS400 just be excessive?

can you see this clip? i'm using an unpopular codec, so i hope you can see it. the video looks truly wonderful on the GS250 (which has 16:9, btw). it's all about lighting - if you have good lighting, the GS250 is very good. this is only my second video i ever shot, and i used 4 point lighting - a total of 1150 watts.

if you don't have good lighting, or if you prefer manual controls, the 400 might be worth spending the extra bucks on. it's on my maybe list.if you were thinking of upgrading, i'd definitely consider the http://reviews.cnet.com/Panasonic_AG...1.html?tag=txt if it's in your price range.

Bass Chick, I was able to see the video. I like the quality--it has a good look. So, you went with the studio after all :vanish: Glad to see you're making the vids!

I'll be focusing mostly on outdoor setups, but I do have a studio setup as well. I went outside with it today and was able to test out some lighting scenarios that I'll typically be using and the clip had amazing quality! The color reproduction was awesome... I have a photoshoot tomorrow so I'm going to do a little video test.

BTW, how does that other model compare to the PV-GS400? I tried to find a review on it but couldn't find one on dvspot.com

    Cheers,
    Brian

No offense meant, and it could be my monitor, but the video had a bit of pixelating going (some shimmering) that would make me hesitate to use this camcorder (if it was shot with the gs250). Thought it wasn't as crystal clear as I have seen in raw footage from other cameras.

BrianDN - the user rating for the GS400 is a lot lower on cnet than for the AG-DVC30. the AG-DVC30 has a user rating of 8.6, and an editor's rating of 8.1. you can read the specs on cnet, and see how the features compare for you, but i wish there was a place to see the video.

here's an in-depth review of it http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content...der-review.htm but i don't think it has video :-(

Slade, the raw footage had no pixelation at all, but there were small issues with focus. even so, i have to say that the video is better quality than any i've bought over the years. i'm happy with it for now

Slade - yeah, I didn't even noticed the pixelated effect towards the end there until you mentioned it. Overall (for this price point), I think this model or the 400 works well... I've been using it more and have concluded that uncompressed, I totally enjoy the quality (although I haven't compressed anything as yet so we'll see)...

BassChick thanx for the info. I'd be very interested in keeping up with your videos, seeing how others turn out. If you end up editing and putting up anymore, let me know and I'll check 'em out.

BassChick -- Yeah, I hope I get to see my edited videos soon as well! LOL... I still have to get my head wrapped around Sony Vegas and all that other software... My focus has always been photography, so videos is a new medium I'm taking on... Soon, though :-)
