Eight Americans arrested in Brazil over porn shoot

Maybe Brazil might not be a good place to relocate your porn business. What do you think?

    ---------------------------

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) - Eight U.S. men were arrested in Rio de Janeiro on charges of hiring prostitutes to shoot pornographic films after one of the women complained to authorities that she had been underpaid, police said on Wednesday.

The men were arrested in a luxurious house in the Sao Conrado beachside neighborhood of the Brazilian city on Tuesday night. Police said they found six local prostitutes wearing bikinis as well as video cameras and equipment in the house.

"Although the cameras were not on at the moment of the arrest, we consider they were caught in the act," police investigator Marcus Neves told Reuters.

Several pornographic tapes made in Rio were confiscated.

"They are talking to us and have already said they were making so-called amateur videos that are in good demand on the U.S. market for that sort of video production," Neves said.

The men, aged between 24 and 38, have told police they were planning to sell the films for up to $40,000 and were paying the women $130 per scene, he said.

Prostitution is legal in Brazil and making porn films is not unlawful. But it is a crime to exploit prostitutes.

"They were contracting prostitutes to make money out of it. This favors prostitution and is a crime, punishable by a jail term of between two and five years plus fines," Neves said.

Two Brazilian women in the house also face similar charges.

hehe they didn't just get in to trouble because they hired prostitutes, they got in to trouble because they tried to rip off and underpay the prostitutes.

so as long as you're willing to be fair and respect your models, Brazil should still be a fine place to film.

stoopid people, don't they realise that sometimes you should just pay a few more bucks to these "models" to keep them happy instead of getting the law involved. DUH!!!

    cheers,

Right, the problem is knowing what is considered fair. Clearly these girls were getting ripped off.. BUT, from what a fellow Brazillian posted on another board, $3 a day is the "minimum wage" there. So who knows.

I guess what it boils down to is not having solid guidelines and not knowing what limit would be considered fair, without overpaying, and being taken advantage of yourself, or being blackmailed by a model and having to pay more then the agreed amount, because of this new precident

good point. who's to say what's fair and not fair? I guess just makin sure things are down in writing beforehand, with signatures and what not, could probably cover ones bases quite well

most unfortunate but these are the risks you take when you shoot porn overseas.
for more information as to how to avoid these "porn pitfalls" please buy my book "producing porn overseas" available now through am*zon.com for $ 19.95 :goof:

I missed the 'exploiting prostitutes' part. but fuck that, it isn't exploiting them. Let the prostitues make their own fucking movies and sell them... hire 'models', find locations, find buyers, and all the costs that go with it. Nothing says they can't, but they don't. too fucking bad if the producers are making way more than the models... that's how it's supposed to be.

hmm, XBiz ran this story also, but they claim some of the prostitutes are underage. that changes my view on the story, if that part is true.

Stupid mistake #1: When shooting overseas, never let the models know your real name, let alone where you live in the overseas country. You are also VERY stupid if you shoot in the hotel or home you are staying in.

Stupid mistake #2: Always make sure the models are happy and know what they are getting into, and negotiate a wage they are fully satisfied with before they sign the 2257 doc. I have had models refuse to work dozens of times after I told them how the photos/videos would be used or if they weren't satisfied with the price (and I didn't think they were worth paying more for).

Stupid mistake #3: If it's true they were really underage, well, then I don't have to talk anymore about how stupid they were.
