Is porn boring?

Is it just me or do you find today's porn movies awfully boring? I admit that I don't watch a lot of porn movies for enjoyment anymore... it's just content to me now.

Today I just received a DVD rip from DeluxePass of an old Joe Gage film "Closed Set" from the early 80's. The concept is simple... throw 8, 10, 12 guys onto a set and tell them to get naked and nasty and try to catch as much of the action on film that you can. It's the same concept as Titan's Manplay series with one huge difference... it's actually very hot. Sure the photography is grainy and the lighting is awful but the action is spontaneous and unrehearsed.

Today's porn movies seem so cold and stiff (and not in a good way). You can almost hear the director yell, "Ok, now spit on his cock", "Lick your cum off of his ass". Every move is expected, nothing surprises you.

Another thing that bores the hell out of me is the length of the scenes. I don't want to have to wait 15 minutes before someone gets their dick sucked. GET TO THE ACTION! I mean, would the world come to an end if a scene started with 2 guys stripping naked and fucking right away? It sure would be nice if they could mix up the action a bit and cut the fat out of the scenes.

When I want to jack-off, I'll often put a brand-spankin' new Titan DVD in. Imo, they have the hottest guys in the business and the best videographers, directors, lighting, production values, etc. Within in 15 minutes, I've lost my hard-on and I'm reaching for "Kansas City Trucking Company" or an old Colt compilation to get the job done.

The old films always leave me wanting more. Because the scenes are generally so short, I often have to replay a scene more than once. The guys seem to be more natural and masculine... hair is everwhere that nature intended. Even the smooth guys are sexy (for those of you that know my reputation, that was especially hard for me to admit). And nevermind the cocks and cumshots! Both appear to be bigger and better. Big swinging dicks shooting and dripping cum seem to fill every corner of your screen. AHHHH!

If porn movies were scratch-and-sniff, the old movies would smell like Crisco, sweat, poppers, cum and maybe a little marijuana... today's movies would smell like silicone lube, hair gel, latex, crystal meth, Right Guard Sport and Viagra... and god forbid, cologne.


Ah, maybe I'm just an old fogey. But I hope and wish for a return to simplicity where men act like the animals that they are. I'm so sick of gym bunnies with that stupid pointy hair style, the shiny tight shirt and the puca shell necklace. Go to any nude beach and the only people that keep their clothes on are these uptight queens. Maybe they have nasty razor burn from shaving their entire crotch or shrunken balls from absuing steroids. Who knows why they are so uptight.


Sorry to pick on Titan again but the big guys always make the easiest targets.

Oooh, I couldn't agree with you more. It's so incredibly sterile and void of any real connection to how we have sex out here. It boggles my mind how anyone can watch a vivid or falcon video and get something out of it but they must because they sell really well. And... as far as porn stars go, they are interchangeable. The bodies are the same, the hair is the same, the dialogue never changes.

Until someone offers something different (in a big way) both to consumers and other webmasters, it's always going to be this way. Mainstream is so horrificly boring.

i refer to it as "adult cartoons!" , which come in handy for my guests when i need to change the linens in their rooms and/or clear the table of breakfast dishes ( i'm quite the host! ) it's a great "distracter" for those not daily "immersed" in it like i am.

Yes i am aware of the risks of unprotected sex! , but isn't that something that could be "edited-out" for as they say in hollywood..."cinematic-flow" the other thing is models are so "mix & matched" and often mixed wrong that even a blind man could see it's bad.

Yes, it is. I'm not impressed with most new developments either. Most guys I know are into old studio films, and newer amateur stuff. Most of the mainstream movies I've seen made over the last 10 years by big studios have been very cold and lifeless, and yeah the models look like they would rather be doing anything else but what they are doing.

I think one of the big things missing from gay porn is the ability to "live vicariously" through the movies you watch. I don't want to shave every inch of my body and have sex with guys who aren't interested in me at all.

There are so many gay men out there with strange, interesting, crazy lives! Producers could just document the lives/sex lives of different gay men and have something 1000x more exciting and watchable. It's been well established that porn stars+acting DON'T mix, it's time to throw out that formula all together and go with something edgey and REAL.

A vagina monologues-esque documentary, listening to many different men talk about their sexual experiences, allowing a camera into their real bedroom while they are being intimate with their real lover, etc, would turn me on and excite me and give me something to talk about.

A boring mainstream release will probably never do any of the above for me.

Also, as far as reality type porn goes, I would so LOVE to see a gay pornstar version of the surreal life! Can you imagine a group of yesterdays gay porn stars with a couple newer ones thrown in, living in a house together and having it documented on film? This is the kind of thing the big studios could make happen, but sadly don't.

I probably don't watch enough variety of porn to know the exact state of its staleness. But I hear it often, so it must be true.

I did discover that over time I unknowingly reduced the variety of porn that I watched to specific niches that I knew would work for me. So as a result I watched less and less. To mix things up I've popped in either classic videos or some straight porn. Better yet, classic straight porn. Way back when Ron Jeremy was still in shape and Paul Baressi was the Tom Selleck of porn.

One thing I have also found, possibly in contrast to others, is that I can enjoy decent story-driven content (I stress decent)... which some classic porn does (gay or straight). Motivation behind the sex can make it a little more intense for me. It feel more real. Even much of today's "reality" porn is way too fake. Acting in the classic porn days wasn't great, but it's sure as heck better than today's pizza boy B-roll.

What's sad is that there is some porn I watch for the comedic factor. Like one guy "forcing" himself on another... all the guy does is grab the other's wrist and he goes falling onto the sofa in apparent overpowering submission. What a fucking GURL. Yeah, that's really hot.

So I guess the bottom line is that porn lacks reality. REAL real, not baitbus real. Real men, realistic situations, realistic acting (if necessary).

I think the problem is, we are starting to pander to the needs of the end consumer to much, surfers / porn viewers, started to become VERY demanding several years back and, IMHO thats when movies (and not only movies, sites themselves) went to shit.

I remember the first gay porn flick i ever watched, even though i *KNOW* it was scripted, it didnt look scripted, it seems that the porn industry in general has become to involved with providing what consumers want, by their perceptions, that they have missed what consumers actually want.

Of course the whole 'reality' craze hasnt helped, i think to some extent, the fact that scripted reality style shows have taken over the TV screens and even spilt out on to the web has had a much larger effect on porn as many are willing to admit, does anyone else remember when you could throw a site up with 100 sets of Ounique content and actually still make sales? We've gone from being profitable online porn business with very little investment needed to a culture of spending, sometimes thousands of dollars for a 45 minute video shoot.

Actually, that reminds me, the other night on SpikeTV i saw a commercial for some fighting event, it was billed as a 'reality' show, you know things have started to go wrong when sports events start calling themselves 'reality shows' :eek:

i also think str8 porn - at least the professional movies - is getting boring. the pornstars are perfect. vivid girls are so perfect that it's like watching barbie dolls with tats. and the plots are too perfect. i liked the older reality porn - it had some soul. the people weren't as purty, but they did look like they were really having fun... which is what sex is about.

Some is uninspired, some is inspired. In fact I think you could say there is a significantly broader variety of porn availbale today then in 1990 or 1980.
With exceptions, most of the movies people remember from this halcyon days are all the California movies.

Perhaps the "California Porn" being made today is uninspired versus the California porn made in 1986 --- and that is what you are comparing everything to. But there is so much more coming out now. You just need to see it.

Very good point! There are a few underground studios such as Treasure Island, Zyloco, Pantheon and HDK that are selling nearly as many vids as the the big studios. But many times they are dealing with subjects/fetishes that some viewers don't wish to see. And just because they are less mainstream, it doesn't mean that they are immune from the same structure problems.
