firefox is so slow or is it just me?

I have been using firefox for a while now, I love its features and browsing with it, however, I have found it is terribly slow to load (takes maybe 10 seconds compared to ie which takes 1 second) and its also a total pain when visiting a site that I need to enter a userid/password as it needs to load the entire page before auto-filling in my userid/password (in ie I can double click the empty login box and select my userid & it fills the pass well before all the images on the page load).

is it just me, am I missing some config options or something, or is this normal for firefox?

    cheers,
    Luke

That is why I stopped using it. It is slower than heck when it comes to pages with a lot of graphics. Explorer beats it far and away when it comes to loading graphics faster.

P.S. You left your undies at my place last nite.

I have had the same experience with Firefox. I never understood why everyone loves it so much.

I like the tab feature, esp when reading boards. I like to open up all interesting threads in new tabs / browsers. When I do that under ie, it tends to crash after about 10 or 15 windows are opened. I also like the way firefox auto-fills in userid/passwords on quite a few sites that ie does not, like the ccbill webadmin site.

But, yeah, its terribly slow. I was thinking maybe it was my setup as I am running norton antivirus plus ms antispyware plus a few other resident programs like this, good to hear its not just me!

    cheers,
    Luke

i sometimes use the pre-firefox mozilla as it is faster to load and still offers the tabs... and yes, i find firefox slower to load, for sure!

Well, the boxers had "LUKE" written on the band, and you told me your Mom "lettered" all your clothes so you would never lose them..so I just thought they were yours.

Oh, maybe others weren't supposed to know that about the lettering. Sorry about that..everyone else..just ignore the first paragraph.

I use FireFox with the Google Accelerator, makes loading less painful. You may also have to increase the firefox browser cache. I'm not sure what the default setting is.

If firefox takes 10 seconds to load, there has got to be something else going on, though.

I mainly use Firefox because I got sick of IE not storing my user/passwords. FF remembers ALL of mine. Many times the page needs to render fully before it loads the data, but I don't mind it too much. I'd rather wait the extra second or two than have to type that stuff in over and over again, multiple times a day.

That, and the whole IE being a giant gaping security hole thing.

Firefox seems quite a lot faster than IE to me.

I just found this trick for Firefox. I am getting much better response times from the browser now. I hope it works for you too.

1.Type about:config into the address bar and hit return.

    2. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

    network.http.pipelining
    network.http.proxy.pipelining
    network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which speeds up page loading.

    3. Alter the entries as follows:

    Set network.http.pipelining to true
    Set network.http.proxy.pipelining to true
Set network.http.pipelining.maxrequests to some number like 20. (This means it will make 20 requests at once.)

    4. Right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer.
Name it nglayout.initialpaint.delay and set its value to 0 (zero). (This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.)

Close your browser after you make the changes. If you're using broadband hopefully you'll load pages a lot faster now.

I'll have to try that. I have been starting to play more with Firefox and I was also disappointed in the slower load times

When I set it to 20, the browser stopped. I changed it to 10 (since it was 4 previously) and it seems to be faster.

    Thanks!

Firefox loads about 5 times faster than IE for me... I tweaked some cache settings though as well... I believe you can get a plugin from mozilla to speed it up as well.

I only use IE if I see a site thats not mozilla friendly. thank god most webmasters are creating sites that are standard unlike IE.

Yep, that helped a whole bunch! But it still feels a little slower than IE on a big page.
