Official: Texas Now a Majority Minority State

The US Census Bureau announced last week that as of July, 2004 Texas has become a majority-minority state, with minorities comprising slightly more than 50% of the state's total 22.5 million population, up from 47% in 2000.

Latinos make up 32% of the state's population. Africal Americans make up 11.5% and are the state's second largest minority group.

The majority of Texas' Latino population is native born.

Texas joins four others US states that have majority-minority populations: Hawaii, New Mexico, California and the DIstrict of Columbia. Other states that have minority populations hovering close are Arizona, Maryland, Mississippi, Georgia and New York.
