    The One Minute Manager

In corporate America and elsewhere, books such as Raving Fans, One Minute Manager, Who Moved My Cheese? And Gung Ho! Have been used as core foundations to establish business models and train management.

Has anyone thought to use these same tactics in their business efforts and endeavors?

Raving Fans is about offering a service as well as a plus one attitude – The customer goes to buy gas and without question or extra cost, the attendant washes the windows of the customer’s car – A service (gas) Plus one (washing the windows)

Who moved my cheese is about getting used to the location of “cheese” (or traffic) and one day it’s not in the spot you always found it. Do you sit around till the cheese is back or do you go looking for other cheese?

And so on with the other titles in the One minute manager collection.

It’s clear that these philosophies can and do apply to all business but has anyone taken the time to apply them?

The most valuable business book that we have used at BearBound.com is the E-Myth Revisited. It's a book geared for small business owners that empowers them to create a systems-oriented business, much like the way a franchise works. Anyone who is feeling overwhelmed by running their websites should pick it up.

Quality service is something rarely found in this business. I believe that the few webmasters that really do provide it probably see their efforts rewarded with better retention and word-of-mouth referrals... one of the things that's always amazed me is how many people in this industry treat it as a hobby, or a way to subsidize a sex life, rather than to actually treat and operate it as a business.

You're absolutely right on there ... I see too many wanting to start at the top of the pyramid and have no clue about the foundation it needs to sit on. Most haven't even considered outlining some sort of business plan, ie: taking time to figuring out what they need now to setup things they want to achieve down the road. Like planning ahead for expenses for expansion plans, and so on. It's like diving into the fire and you forgot to buy an extinguisher IMHO.
