It looks like thats going to be our next jump up the connection ladder so im wanting to do some research before going out and ordering it.

I thought T1 maxed out at 1.5mbps. Isn't most cable and DSL that same speed and faster?

T1 is 1.5Mbps symmetrical (same up as down).

Pricing is usually distance sensitive, meaning you pay one charge for the bandwidth and another charge for the circuit from the central office to wherever the service is connected. If you're really close to the wire center that serves you, the circuit charge can be cheap ($50-150/month). If you're 4 or 5 miles, the circuit charge can be exhorbitant (I've heard up to $600-700/month) The bandwidth charge varies based on competition. In some parts of the country where your only choice is the local phone company, it can be $1000-1500/month (in addition to the circuit charge). Here in the bay area, I know people that have gotten T1 service, including the bandwidth and the circuit charge, for under $500/month.

In most cases, the cable providers, such as Comcast and Time-Warner, offer much, much better deals, and they guarantee bandwidth and uptime to their business customers. You might pay $200/month, but you'll typically get much faster download (up to 3-5 Mbps) and reasonable upload (384-512 kbps) which works fine, unless you're trying to run a server with adult content on it.

dsl/cable are unguaranteed speeds. I read they have around 10-100 people sharing 1.5Mbps with residential DSL.

T1 is business grade 1.5Mbps up AND down. For the most part the only thing that would affect your speeds is the site you're accessing since you're not sharing your bandwith at the headend with hundreds of kids downloading big tittie porno from the torrents


Lee I've looked into it and found out that the price varies depending on local loop charges, I think something to do with what it would take to connect your place to the Internet. How many loops they have to run from your house to wherever the internet connection happens, or something like that.

Expect a price from $300 to around $500 a month. And about that much for the install.

In Austin, I've used the same ISP since walking into their office in 1994 and registering my first domain name.

The T1 that runs into my apartment is $299/month.

NOw back in 1994, I began running my webserver sites off a fancy new technology at the time called ISDN... which back then people figured it stood for I Still Don't Know. And that isdn router cost $999... a figure that makes me giggle today. But they helped me condigure it and get it working with my Windows NT 3.51 Dell.

I highly recommend that you find a local ISP that is run by people who you can get to know. This has has helped me immeasurably over the years. There used to be a ton of little ISPs in any area back in the happy go lucky 90s, but I'd figure that even today you can find small local outfits.

They are flexible, more close to the Internet way of life and hopefully less likely to have problems with adult content.
