Gay Male Sex = Life In Prison

The Hong Kong government has appealed a landmark High Court ruling that found laws punishing gay male sex with life imprisonment were unconstitutional and discriminatory.

The government said last week it would challenge the August High Court judgment, which said laws prohibiting sexual relations between men if one or both partners were less than 21 were “demeaning of gay men”.

The government said its appeal followed “significant public concern”. The lawyer of the 20-year-old gay man who challenged the anti-gay law said he was surprised at the Hong Kong government’s move.

“We should start acting like a world city and stop lagging behind on human rights issues such as these,” Michael Vidler said.

A date for the appeal has yet to be set, Reuters reported. Under current Hong Kong law, gay male sex is punishable with life imprisonment if either partner is under 21. The age of consent for heterosexual and lesbian sex is 16.

Up until a couple of years ago in the state of Western Australia had the same archaic laws until a labor party was elected on a more enlightened agenda. This particular law wasn’t based on any research undertaken by academics but just good old bigotry and discrimination.

When I first saw the subject heading for this, I thought you were talking about "gay" sex IN prison, which I find to be far hotter than getting put in prison for having gay sex. haha

when i saw the title, i felt like i had been hit in the stomach - for real. it's such horrible and shocking thing! i mean, two people do something 100% in private that doesn't affect another living being - and they could end up doing LIFE in prison?

Yeah, that's a pretty archaic law, isn't it? And it's totally a double standard law as well. Straight kids can make a decision that it's OK for them to have sex at 16, but gay men have to wait until we're 21 to know if it's right for us? Whatever.
