Multiple .Htaccess Question..

Okay stupid question..

I already know that i can have multiple .htaccess files on specific domains, for example, one for a sites members area and, one for a sites root directory however, can i put multiple 404 redirects in the members area and root?

domain.com/.htaccess and;
domain.com/members/.htaccess

Each with a different 404 redirect url or, will the root htaccess take control of 404 redirection?

Yes you can and it should kick the user to the specified page if they are probing from within that protected directory.
