Couple Of Ok Movies For This Weekend..

If you folks are looking for something to watch, The Island (Ewan McGregor) is a pretty cool movie, i actually expected it to be a lot more 'action' and shooting but it turned in to a well-paced plot about cloning.

Also The 40 Yr Old Virgin was kinda funny in some places, you gotta keep an eye out for the old Asian guy, he cracked me up several times LOL

Then after you have relaxed a little, better get started on your Christmas shopping

    Regards,

    Lee

I think Lee was referring to new movies that had come out this week. Harry Potter has been out for a good 3 weeks.

Yah yah ... GOF was TonyTheTiger (TTT) *GRrrrrr8*.

Joaquin Walked the Line almost perfectly (they could not have found a better actor to play J$) - although I am not a country/western fan, I must say that lil ditty (I can not remember the name of the state) the two belt out is not too bad - both do a TTT kinda job!

All I can recommend (and I am assuming most will say saw it) is StewieGriffin: The Untold Story. I give it 9 out of ten buds :honest:

It is ski season, so I have not viewed much, with the exception of porn... tele/freeheel porn that is. Oh, The Weather Network is another of my fav porn stations!

I've seen several movies over the past week, and here are a few of my suggestions in case you find yourself in theaters:

    1. KING KONG -- Brilliant! Simply f**king brilliant! Peter Jackson has filmed THE definitive version of this timeless story, delivering not only a beautiful film steeped in the hues and moods of the 1930s (the art direction is flawless), but an epic love story of grand proportions. Kong is so real and life-like, it's impossible not to fall in love with him, and Naomi Watts is radiantly luminous as the damsel in distress. Some are bulking that, at 3 hours, the film is too long, but frankly, I could have sat there for ANOTHER hour of Jackson's genius for making "big Hollywood pictures" that deliver thrills and chills for the popcorn crowd AND true emotion and complexity for the more intellectually-minded. He is, quite frankly, a master of filmmaking. Grade: A

    2. THE PRODUCERS -- Simply hilarious and endlessly enchanting. Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick reprise their Broadways roles as theater producers scheming to make away with the big bucks by producing a sure-fire flop. The musical numbers are flawless, and the performances (particularly Lane, Gary Beach and Roger Bart) are briliantly over-the-top and jaw-droppingly hilarious. Uma Thurman is a riot as Ula. Seriously, we laughed so hard in this one that I was crying almost as much as I was during the final 10 mins of Kong. Grade: A-

    3. THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH & THE WARDROBE -- One of my favorite books comes to life is an enchanting and lyrical film adaptation that takes quite a bit of time to fully get off the ground (the book was always a bit episodic in the beginning as well), but, once it does, it just soars. You'd have to be a ignoramous not to pick up on the Christian allegories, but they are very subtle and not at all intrusive. Besides, they are great life lessons to begin with. Tilda Swinton makes an excellent White Witch, and the four kids are all very talented (and the oldest boy is especially cute for you chicken hawks). Fauns, talking beavers, messianistic lions and mean old white witches... good versus evil never looked so good, or felt so damned comforting. Grade: B+

    P.S.

Of course, if you've followed the Brokeback Mountain thread, you know that I think the film is wonderful on all counts. I just can't recommend it enough. If you like a good old-fashioned love story (albeit one that doesn't end happily), then you will no doubt find much to enjoy in Ang Lee's heartwrenchingly poignant and lyrical film adaptation of Annie Proulx's lovely short story about two studly ranch hands who fall into a quite unexpected and life-altering relationship. Grade: A

    King Kong Counter

Well I saw King Kong yesterday, and I was not particularly impressed. And honestly I didn't really go in with the highest of expectations. I was looking for a fun, action film, and a nice homage to the original. In many ways, it was a good homage. For example, the recreation of 1932 New York City was neat.

However, it seemed like the director kept hesitating to actually step up to the original. Was he just in awe? King Kong stays in the easy-today comfort zones of movies; it is just lathered with special effects sequences. After the sixth wave of flesh eating roach attack and dinosaur attack, I thought more about finishing my Junior Mints, and revisiting the concessions counter.

The film's largest handicap: It's really really long. Maybe I am becoming an old fuddy duddy - but if there had been less special effects scenes, they remaining ones would have made a greater overall impression.

Another problem - the music soundtrack. Remember how Raiders of the Lost Ark not only riveted the viewer from beginning to end with its fun characters and action scenes, but the music literally DROVE the movie, relentlessly pushing you from South America to Nepal to Egypt to the melting Nazis. King Kong's music is nothing memorable. Is it because so much creative talent nowadays is poured into the CGI special effects units? I don't know.

ALTERNATIVE - yesterday Turner Classic Movies had a Shakespeare day, and my DVR got a workout. Last night my roomie and I watched the 1948 Hamlet with Laurence Olivier. I had never seen it.

What a treat! It's also three hours, and done with much fewer special effects. The musical score is haunting. Olivier (and Jean Simmons) are so good looking, not to mention great actors. The staging of Hamlet's ghost, and the-play-within-the-play go down is chilling and effective.... something far moreso that watching a hairy midshipman get his arms and head swallowed by flesh eating centipedes.

Well, I think the original is an archaic and awkwardly outdated relic that is best enjoyed by placing it in the context of what they were able to accomplish with that era's technology. As far as I was concerned, there wasn't really all that much to step up to in the first place. The performances by the actors were wooden and flat, and Kong? Well, I never once felt connected to him.

And I rather liked the music in Jackson's.

Oh well. Guess it just goes to show that you can have a variety of opinions on the same topic.

Oh I know.... the movie has gotten four or five bananas in all the reviews I've seen. I guess as Jasun is to Brokeback Mountain, Desslock is to King Kong.
