Why Is There A Lack Of Niches In The Gay Market?

I was just chatting with someone on ICQ who was saying how annoyed they were that more programs dont expand their range of gay pay sites.

Many of them seem to have the same niches and, upon closer inspection, twinks, bears, ebony, asian, uniform, do seem to be the niches that many of these programs have, most of which, also appear to be using similar content on their tours.

What do you think we can attribute the lack of niches within the gay marketplace to? Is it purely a lack of originality or, is there another reason for it?

I know the reason isnt that the ore specific niches dont sell, Tattooed Guys has been doing really well for us over the last month and there aren't exactly what id call a 'mass' of tattoo specific traffic sources out there.

So, if these more specific niches are selling, why arent more people (particularly sponsors) giving gay marketers the chance to promote them?

As a side by side comparison, if you check out the wide reach that porn has when it comes to the straight niche sites, the gay side of the industry really does seem to be lacking

Your thoughts on the reason for this lack of choice?

This is something I plan on fixing in shooting my new content ( As well as when I start new sites ) this is kinda the same thing I was talking about with THE FORMULA THREAD! (Something desslock mentioneD) That was a very good point.. I plan on mixing up my fomulas but not only that with conent but with the new sites I want to put out... With different Niches and Twists to the content/sites .. I have alot of ideas but not enough time to post them!..... LOL plus It would give away my secret *Winks*

Great thread Lee and I completly agree with you.. Im hoping people stop doing what they think sells and start new trends and make more interesting cutting edge porn cause there is only so much oral porn I can handle *Rips of out hair* UGH!!! LOL.. But anyways I hope alot of people get in on this thread.... I would be very interested to see what everyone has to say... Maybe even get some new things started with the strike of this conversation!

there is a lack of niches in the str8 market, too. most webmasters would rather follow a format that works for someone than take a risk.

about a year and a half ago, i noticed there wre no big programs or medium programs with str8 handjob sites. i started asking around and bugging people because my handjob avs site was selling off the hook. obviously the niche was jamming.

after 6 months of nagging, every program came out with a handjob site - and most of them use the same content *LOL* few or none really got the niche, but they heard it made money.

i have had a grandpa site (men over 55 only) that sold particularly nicely for me. also girls with freckles, girls in socks, men in glasses, women in glasses, real grandma content without bullshit text about cookies and crap, and tons of other niches you still can't find many or any sites to represent. the only reason i can imagine for this is that people in our industry don't want to take chances or do any work on a project unless it's been validated by someone else first. after all, shooting content isn't that expensive for an avs site to test the niche and setup is virtually free for an avs site.

go figure!

Thats true to some extent, especially for those of us who like promoting those micro niches

That being said though, there are still far more straight niches that have sites developed for them than there are for their gay counterparts.

Using one of the examples you mentioned below, handjobs, as you said, pretty much every program worth their salt have a str8 handjob site yet, they dont have a gay handjob site. You'd figure, the content, for the most part, could be cross-compatible between the gay market and straight niche.

Thats my point i guess, all of the straight niches you mentioned there, could very easily be marketed to gay surfers.

The only thing, in my eyes, up to a point, that really couldnt be marketed to gay surfers, would be things like boob sites or pussy fetish sites but then, even that could be cross-market compatible to some extent.

I just dont understand why, if these companies have a lot of content anyway, even if its custom shoots, why they cant also use the models in these shoots to promote a similar niche for the gay market place. It just seems like they are leaving money (and a lot of it) on the table.

if i spent 6 months nagging everyone non-stop, i'm sure the str8 programs would come out with a gay handjob site that would be just as lame as their straight handjob sites.

there are less people working the gay market than the str8, so it makes sense that there are more sites.

niches i'd STILL like to see that are either under-represented or else unrepresented as far as affiliate programs go:

chubs
bears (good quality bear paysites are thin on the ground)
men in suits
rich men - classy guys who look like money
shaved and tattooed guys - exclusive content, dedicated site
pierced cocks
guys with long hair
sexy goth guys
men giving other men handjobs
dilf sites done like milf sites
guys in glasses
small cocks done in a positive fetish way
shaved guys
guys with lots of pubic hair

are just a few that come to mind...

What about butt sites / or rimming ?? or toys?? or Maybe ass play sites?? Just wondering I have seen all these sites claiming to be good butt sites or ass sites or toys sites and there aweful.. With dates content or screen caps they pulled from a video or something like that and I havent seen it done well especially for people like me and alot of others that I know like it alot... I have seen some sites and I just got bored and there wherent wild enough there ideas or concepts and it drove me nuts I could go in further detail about what I mean .. Like what else they could be doing or what kind of interesting things they could add to there shoots and I mean this stuff isnt hard to incorporate into shoots you are already doing for stuff like solos or 2 ways .. LOL just take some time to get extra footage and then market and make different niches out of it!! But like you know men over 30 Butt site or Like DILF toys sites ( 2 way and self masturbation) Bear ass play sites I mean there alittle more complex there actually a mixture of accouple different things but makes for interesting exploration into different markets!!

kelly - you're so right. rimming is another niche that is totally lacking, even without micro niches. i see sites that claim rimming content, but usually it's the same old porn movies i've seen before with like 1 minute of rimming in it somewhere.

I'm still waiting for a twink site the deals with skater, punk and emo guys. I can't believe nobody has done this yet. That culture is huge these days, and there must be men fantasizing about them.

I think it also goes to say that some gay men would buy into such a site to see straight twinks doing their thing. Not to mention the straight men who are sick and tired of seeing 18yo models paired with 35yo men.

unfortunately your page logos and pics and text are terriblly old school. aebn uses pics that were too overused to sell on galleries - and color schemes that don't work for the niches.

it would be SO wonderful if aebn had multiple theater looks and we could choose the one we wanted. even better if we could also select the movies that would show up on the page.

i can't get as many people to sign up for FREE on aebn as i can sell paysite memberships.

Well I don't know about not being able to alter the aebn theatres that much, other than what I have done for my own. It seems to me you can pretty well choose any types of colours for every aspect of the theatre, from font colours, link colours, to page colours, border colours, etc.

Not as simple as simply choosing a template already made, but the cutomised features work well for me so that the AEBN pages actually match my website.

You can stock the custom theatre with videos from a studio as well, though I'd like to see some more niche type features. Still I have found a lot of options. Same for hot movies in their custom feature, though I am not thrilled with their population aspect either. but that's me.

I like AEBN for being able to have my own banner across the top of the page but would like to see a better way of having the return link shown.

just my 2 cents though

The niche crowds are the most internet savvy of all the groups out there. They know what's out there. They know exactly what's stock, and what's truly original.

I would say that for sites to develop, they have to come from webmasters within the community who possess the ability and the passion to satisfy their following.

I just can't see mainstream companies branching out. It's too easy to make money with the tried and true formulas and business plans today. If that changes, maybe they will be forced to try new things.
