What is .htaccess and how does it work in setting up webpages that are only viewable with membership?

    .htaccess

.htaccess is a pretty cool way to handle a lot of basic stuff like passworld protection, IP redirects, and handle page errors.

Add passwords is pretty easy but if you want to run a "membership based" site with lots of usernames and passwords I would get something a bit more robust then using .htaccess.

A good place to begin to learn about .htaccess is
    http://www.freewebmasterhelp.com/tutorials/htaccess/

It you type .htaccess or ".htaccess password protection" you can find a LOT of information online with examples.

Hmm. A little more robust is great, but can you recommend any?

One this site you will find various generators to create .htaccess files for ie hotlink protection, password protection, or blocking of hitbots:

I highly recommend strongbox for this, its only $100 and it protects your membership sites from password traders and hackers plus gives you direct control over your htpasswd file.

    Thanks!

    Thanks for all your help!

I'm looking at sentry, so far they don't too bad or seem too hard to use. Anyone use them before?
