    stay away from spry.com

A quick story, I tried to use spry.com to register a domain name last week (when you use whois.sc and it says "name is available, click here" it goes to spry.com as a registrar). I registered it and paid $7.95 with my credit card and got an email saying all was registered and they would send me my login details within 24 hours.

The next day I got an email asking for a faxed copy of photo id to verify my id. I thought this was strange, but decided to do it anyway. The next day they confirmed that they received my id but then said:
"Unfortunately, when I went to examine the order, it appears that the domain has been registered by someone else. It seems that the domain was registered within a few minutes of your order being placed. "

I find it a strange coincidence that someone else would register the same domain name that I did within minutes of me registering it. It sounds more like they thought it was good and stole it from me. I did get a refund but I lost the domain name (it was a pretty good one too)

    cheers,
    Luke

the whois.sc DB doesn't update right after a domain is registered.
Sometimes it takes them hours to show the domain as taken.
So checking with a domain reigstrar's whois or other places is always good

jIgG, thanks for that info, I did not know that.

but what I find strange is that when I registered the domain name through spry.com it came up as available, they took my money and said it was registered to my name, but then all the sudden it isn't? whois.sc might not be realtime but you would expect a registrar to be!!!

    cheers,
    Luke

Luke, I agree with you. It seems like you might have been hosed by spry.com.

According to their site, they're reselling enom.com, which is the registrar we use, and we've found them to be *very* reliable... and we've recently found that domains are fully resolving less than 10 minutes after registering, so I don't think there is much delay any more in registering domains with whois.sc.

If you are doing any sort of volume in domain names, I highly recommend getting an Enom reseller account. You have to prepay for 100 domains to start, I think, but service is stellar, and you get free rock-solid DNS in the deal.

I've also heard good things about GoDaddy, but for whatever reason, I've always liked enom better, particularly if we're reselling domain registration for our hosting customers.

Chip, I have a good working relationship with Eric, the guy that runs cheapestregistry which is an Enom reseller. I totally agree, enom is rock solid. I have to admit I was just being lazy because the register link was right there and I thought they could be trusted, but now I know better.

    cheers,
    Luke

gonna leave it a secret for now, I want to see if they will be putting up a for sale page first, if they do I might offer them some coin.

    cheers,
    Luke
