How Long Before The Industry Reaches Critical Mass?

By that i mean, how long do you think it will be before we have so many webmasters in the adult industry that we'll all be lucky to be making 1 or 2 sales a week?

Do you think it will even happen?

2257 regulations certainly did a good job of weeding out webmasters over the past 12 months however, now that we seem to be back on track with that, do you think we're going to see an influx of new webmasters joining the industry over the next couple of years or, do you think we're going to lose some more before that happens?

It seems to me like we [the industry] gets to a certain level on a regular basis before something happens that turns webmasters away from porn, a few years back it was copa, then visa / mastercard then we had 2257 more recently.

I wonder if those threats to the industry hadnt happened, would we be worse off at the present time?

    Your thoughts?

    Regards,

    Lee

i don't think it'll happen because most people suck at marketing. so another 100,000 webmasters who make galleries no one would every click through, sites you can't even find your way in and free sites with such bad content that no link list will post them probably won't hurt most of us here much.

most of the last 100 people i saw come into the industry either quit because they couldn't make money or keep doing it as a hobby. very few have even made $500 a month after a year.

besides, we can keep microniching and microniching - every time you're close to the only site with a niche, you're gonna make sales...

It will happen the same time that Dell stops selling computers. In other words, it will never happen.

As long as people keep wanting to look at adult material, those who provide it will keep providing it. And Basschick is correct, most adult webmasters suck at marketing.

Recall the saying: "If you build a better mousetrap people will beat a path to your door?" Well, the other part of that saying is: "Provided you tell them where the door is". Most adult webmaster have no clue how to do that. You have to have the product AND you have to know how to market it. The successful adult webmasters can do both, but I'd guess they represent only 10% of all adult webmasters.

I agree, it'll never happen. Sure we'll still see the droves of newbies with that "I'm going to make millions overnite" daze in their eyes, but as has been mentioned, most are clueless how to actually market their ideas. And when they find out just how much WORK this is ... they'll leave. :goseek:

yup, it will never happen, the internet is still growing massively every day as new people get hooked up and as people switch to broadband, plus even when we are all online and running on fast computers, there will always be room for a fresh new site.

    it might not happen.
But the newbies seem to believe that they should throw all the free content at the surfers -- fucking and jizz included -- and hope they sign up.

So while it might not be the quantity of webmasters, other factors could contribute to lower sales. Not nessecarily 1-2 a week.

    Then there's bittorent.
I know a few people who download movies for days and laugh about not having to pay $60 for a DVD.

I don't think it's that many webmasters out there, at least not as many as there were in lets say 2000-2001. I think all the VISA rules, 2257 regs and such kinda weeded out a lot of people.

And you know what ... no matter how hard you try and help people, there will always been newbies who think that a fushia-coloured porn site is really cool.

The problem is the flashing lights, the $30 a sign-up, you'll be rich ... it brings them in. And when they find out they actually have to make something or nurse a site ... they're gone.

For every hundred that come in, we're lucky if one sits down.

About a week and a half. And that Y-2K thing was a bitch, wasn't it? And Hailey's comet was gonna suck up all the water. I think we're pretty safe, we're too big a business.

thats cuz the owner of the flashing lights site is the one really making money selling them some turnkey crap.
