External Drive Formatting Question..

Does anyone know if formatting an external USB drive works the same way as formatting a drive inside a machine?

For example, do i just need to type in format g: or is there a different method used to format external hard drives? Ive never done this on an external drive before so want to make sure i dont fuck it up LOL

Yes, just go ahead and format it (from DOS format g: ) but preferably through Windows (right-click, format). Because the drivers are stored on the computer (in the operating system) you won't delete the drivers when you format and the computer will still recognize the drive.
