House candidate admits former work as male prostitute

DALLAS — A Dallas Democrat seeking election to the Texas House of Representatives has acknowledged that he once worked as a prostitute.

Tom Malin, a salesman and actor, said he no longer works as a prostitute but conceded that his previous life could cost him the nomination in the March 7 Democratic primary.

"I've made mistakes in my life, and I've stood before my creator and I've accepted responsibility for my behavior," Malin told The Dallas Morning News for its editions today.

"I've also accepted his grace and his redemption and his love and his forgiveness," and that's what is important, he said.

Archived versions of Web sites that are now defunct advertise the services of a male escort identified as Todd Sharpe. The phone number listed with Sharpe belongs to Malin, The Morning News reported.

Malin, who once was a member of the Dallas Citizens Police Review Board, has also worked as a Mary Kay salesman and performed in Dallas-area theater productions. His candidate Web page describes him as a managing director for the marketing arm of a Dallas electricity provider.

Malin faces retired salesman Jack Borden in the Democratic primary. The winner will face incumbent Republican Dan Branch in November in a race to represent a district covering much of central Dallas.

On his candidate Web page, Malin said he is "committed to giving our families a voice in Austin, with a focus on education, the economy, and restoring a 'spirit of ethics' to our State House."

He said Thursday that he would stay in the race.

"I don't regret my past, nor do I wish to shut the door on my past," he said. "I think anyone who has made mistakes in their lives can be a viable member of community and society." FULL STORY

    -----------

    Good for him.

I like this part of his Bio on his home page "Tom's success as an entrepreneur has included being a Mary Kay Independent Senior Sales Director and Pink Cadillac Driver. Tom was recognized as one of the top recruiters and sellers with Mary Kay and one of only 3 men to ever earn the use of the highly coveted Pink Cadillac."

If he can sell makeup, and sex, maybe he can sell Democratic values in politics.

    What's your opinion?

I don't care if he was an escort. I do have some concern about his "accept[ing] his grace and his redemption and his love and his forgiveness"

We already have too many politicians that have found god [I never knew god was lost, so why is there such a need to find him??]. I would rather have a former escort that admits what he did but leave out the obvious pandering to religion.

What really matters are his views on issues that will come before the body he could be elected to and his honesty with his potential consitituents.

Oh yeah, and he is cute.

He dose not have a chance people in Dallas right or wrong are going to vote him out so fast he will not know what hit him. I bet the republicans found out about it and blackmailed him into the statement.

You are right max. There are very few areas where someone with this kind of bad press could have ANY chance to win a primary and then an election against an incumbent. Hell, I don't like him because he comes across as false to me and just by reading that story I am probably more educated about the candidate than half of the voters.

Is this a solid republican territory? It says "central Dallas" and the incumbent is a repub.... not a big deal if it was a no-win area but it would be nice to see more than this guy and a retired salesman from the Democratic party.

isn't prostitution a pre-requisite for employment into politics?

i am not going to be the first one here to "cast a stone" i think there are things in all of our lives we are ashamed and/or regret , i will forever regret not becomming a kindergarten teacher simply because teachers are not paid enough and i didn't want to starve and become a prostitute and totally lose myself all together in politics. :goof:

sincerely ~ ..."i did not have sexual relations with that woman"...

Make no mistake about it, Texas is a red state. Although it is red more because of religious values than political values. Until very recently, Texas has had a democratically controlled state government. That was until Delay and Rove gerrymandered the voting districts to favor republican candidates both on the state and federal level.

As with any state, voting is surprisingly democratic in large urban areas. However rural and suburban areas are almost completely republican. Travis County (the home of Austin) is overwhelmingly democratic. It was the only county in Texas to vote against Prop 2 (the amendment to the Texas constitution to outlaw gay marriage).

In the 2004 elections, many urban center precincts had a majority vote for Kerry. In Dallas County as a whole, Bush only got 50% of the vote to Kerry's 49%. As much as I hate her, our mayor Laura Miller has reguarly participated in our Alan Ross Freedom Day Parade (our gay pride but we don't dare call it that).

What was the point I was trying to make? Oh yeah... Tom Malin. His precinct is 108 which is about as gay as the Castro in San Francisco or Weho in L.A. Lol. And as sad as it is, the whole religious forgiveness thing will only add to his voter base.

I predict a big win for Tom Malin.

And you must have missed this nugget from Squirt's original post.
... has also worked as a Mary Kay salesman and performed in Dallas-area theater productions.

Actually I think if he played it well, Dallas voters would like him MORE because he worked for Mary Kay, versus the negatives with earlier escorting. Dallas is all about its hometown Looking Good enterprises, and Mary Kay is right up there with Neimans.
