how do you decide what size vids to use?

how do you decide what size and speed videos to use?

we're sort of going wtih the "blow the members out of the water" perspective for the member area. the large videos were 1mb at 640x480 but i am re-encoding them all at 720x480 and 1.6mb. we were considering using a 2.2 bitrate but that seemed maybe more than we needed - although i'm still pondering it as at 1024x768 a 1.6mb video does show some loss of quality.

so - how do you balance between budget and quality for your videos?

You do realize by 'gay' I mean a man who has sex with other men?

Bandwidth for members is really cheap, personally I don’t consider it at all. 1.6 MB is really small for a video for me, my average vid is about 5MB up to around 20 sometimes, but like lee said you normally know more about this stuff than us

I think she was referring to 1.6Mbps, meaning each second of video takes about 1.6 megs. And... at that resolution, bandwidth, even though cheap, does become a factor. If you have 100 video clips and each is 100 mb, then you have 10 gigs of videos. If 1000 members downloaded all your videos, that's 10,000 gigs of throughput, the equivalent of 25 fully packed T-1s... so even at 25 or 50 cents/gig, it still adds up

chip's right. the only 1.6 mb videos in my site are dialup clips. my 1.6 mb streaming clips are between 35 and 65 mb each with 3 - 6 clips making 1 full video.

a full video that is 5 - 20mb is pretty small and grainy. on the other hand, some micro niche sites with original content still offer 20-35 mb full videos and do okay if not excitingly. but i want to make a great first impression with our movies, and str8 movies in a lot of sites is SO much better than most gay site videos that it's not funny.

the average porn site can get away with a 480x360 video at a 512 bitrate and look fairly good. and we do offer a 512 for people who don't wanna wait.

Thax I will keep all that in mind I am about to really start boosting the content I have on my own domain “after all not many feeds left to get anymore LOL” I just did not want the videos to take too long to load, and to look like I have more of them than I do. I also want my site to be as good as the str8 ones too maybe I will join a few to see what they are doing with their videos as well. I really am about to get serous about this studio content accusations.

WMVs don't take long to load - they are a naturally streaming format that starts to play very soon after they start to load unless the viewer has changed their settings.

the best thing to do is offer 3 or 4 sizes of video because if you put up a movie that a 768k dsl guy doesn't have to wait for, a 3mb dsl guy won't be happy with the quality.

Ya when I redo my on domain videos I will offer 3 or so size options, but even the WMVs vids over like 20Mb take awhile to buffer even with my cable connection, so thats normally about the cut off I have now. I am really looking forward to adding more studio vids, I want to start a feed company specializing in only twink/frat stuff as well. Of course it going to take a bit longer to afford a large upgrade in vids, they are really expensive so I will save up and get them in bulk.

Was the footage filmed in HD? I ask because 1024x768 is higher than DVD resolution. If it was shot in standard definition, that would stretch the image and add imperfections no matter what bitrate you used.

720x480 @ 1.6mbps is probably an optimal choice for a premium download. If you're really looking to blow them away, I'd keep the resolution the same and just experiment with bitrates... find the point of diminishing returns. 720x480 is already easy to resize and watch in full-screen and still have a good looking clip. Even better with higher bitrates.

720x480 at 2.2mbps would look pretty sweet.

    All IMHO.

thanks for the feedback, HotMaleVideos. for the high videos i wasn't planning to go smaller than 720x480 - and even at 2.2mb, i do see those imperfections you're talking about since the vids aren't HD.

Good deal. Stretching a clip out larger than its native recording always works against ya. 720x480 is DVD resolution, so I wouldn't go higher than that for sure. I'd just experiment with the bitrates to find the sweet spot. There's always going to be some video artifacts though. :boo:

720x480 is indeed my camcorder's resolution.

i have june down in our budget as when i'm getting an HD camcorder, and i can't wait. have you seen the mayor's money trailers? the ultras, not the supers - they are an inspiration to me!

I've been using some HD cameras for mainstream stuff I'm working on. They look incredible. But damn it takes up a lot of drive space. LOL.
