    Lesbian Crowned Homecoming King

FREDERICK, Md. (March 7) - Hood College is reviewing its homecoming rules after a lesbian was crowned king, a college official said.

Jennifer Jones, the 21-year-old senior who beat out three men for the honor, said the crowning was a positive step for the private liberal arts college.

"It is cool that Hood allows people to be themselves," Jones told The Frederick News-Post. "If people didn't want me to be king, they wouldn't have nominated me and voted for me."

Jones, of Newark, Del., received 64 of 169 votes cast for king last month.

More than two weeks after Jones was crowned, criticism and praise were still rippling through the 2,100-student campus in western Maryland.

"She is not a man," said Singleton Newman, a 22-year-old senior who was nominated for queen. "It is a gender issue, and she is a woman."

Santo Provenzano, 21, who competed for king, said Jones' selection made the event seem like a joke. "It discourages guys from wanting to take part in the future," he said.

Donald Miller, Hood's student activities director, said all homecoming events will be reviewed and possibly changed. "We will look at what students want Hood's homecoming to be," he said.

It was only the second annual homecoming for the school. Men started attending Hood in 1971 but the school didn't become fully coeducational until 2003 when men were permitted to live on campus for the first time.

Jones tried to run for homecoming prince last year, but a student committee wouldn't let her on the ballot even though she had gathered the required number of signatures on nominating petitions.

Miller said a rule change this year abolished the petitions and required that candidates be nominated by student ballots.

That is SO funny. When I was in college, I used to write this opinion piece in the college newspaper from the point of view of (surprise!) an outspokenly "out" gay man. During Homecoming week, the frat house at the end of my street put a huge banner up on the outside of their house that said, "KEN KNOX FOR HOMECOMING QUEEN." It was hysterical. I don't think that I was actually nominated. Not that I would have accepted anyway. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm not much of a "queen."

But I always wanted to invite some of those guys up to my place for some good old fashioned hazing.

Personally, I don't really care. But I am a little more rigid in things like gender when it comes to certain traditions. By their very definition, king is male, and queen is female. King is male ruler, queen is female ruler. End of story. But hey, if the kids want it, let 'em have it.

I'm kind of mixed on my feelings. On one hand I think it's pretty cool, but I also can see where many would feel the King should be male. Now if the school was all female, I'd certainly see how something like this came about, but the school went co-ed a few years ago.

Now if it was a matter of 2-same sex wanting to GO to the homecoming as each other's date, that I'd be all for supporting 100%.

I don't really see any big prob with this. Afterall it is the student that vote so it seems to be representative of what they want.

I guess I am not so rigid when it comes to matters of gender. I sort of look at where those definitions come from and dont feel a strong need to perpetuate the sterotypes that have been set up for me.

    good for her!

i've never understood why there's always been a "miss america" but never a "mr. america" contest complete with talent/interview/swimsuit.
this kinda'brings us around to topics such as "female boxers" and women in "combat-situations" , my thoughts are if you really want to do something in life why let sex stand in the way.

sincerely ~ ..."madame president and the first man"... :goof:

I think it's closed-minded even suggesting that she should be Prom King. It just furthers the stereotypes that dykes are the men and fags are the girls.

It suggests -- actually screams -- that lesbians aren't or can't be real women or that she doesn't have a hope in hell of winning against the pretty girls.

But then to accept any of this one would actually have to accept that the whole prom king and queen thing actually means anything or is important. It's just a mechanism to massage to egos of the pretty, popular (often rich) people.

Geez ... do I sound bitter?

    Michael
