What Was Your Biggest Mistake To Date In The Biz?

Just wondered what your biggest mistake was so far in the industry since you started?

For me, id say it was trusting the wrong people, thankfully though, it takes a lot to get me to actually trust someone these days which, in itself could be a mistake LOL

So what was your biggest mistake to date in the industry and, how did you rectify it and make sure you wont make it again?

    Regards,

    Lee

Talking too much in webmaster forums, and I have joined a 12 step group to help me kick the habit. At least now I can admit I have a problem so only 11 steps more too go :groovy:

Certainly trusting too easily cost me at the beginning. In many ways haven't changed that much though I think I am more apt to choose a bit more cautiously than before. I also don't give 5th and 6th chances anymore.

Fear of Change. The best example was sticking with a hosting company that was reasonably priced initially, but by not continuing to look for a better deal, fearing a server move, I was overpaying by 4 times what I should have been paying for years! The result was tens of thousands down the drain.

I agree with Ren. We've been sticking with a certain hosting company for years and paying through the nose out of fear of moving.

Our new servers will be up and running hopefully this week (we are all in prayer mode) right now and the savings will be thousands a month.

For me it was not purchasing more domains. I almost even purchased mbe.com which is my initials but it ended up getting bought by Mailboxes Etc. I wish I would of bought thousands of domains.

Believeing people who believed their own hype.

And not moving to LA to work for Fratmen sooner.

Oh, and shagging that dude in the can in Phoenix. Man, I'll NEVER hear the end of THAT one... :jasun:

Putting all my eggs in one basket. I'm more diversified now in the work I do and the sites I put my energy into, both for clients and for myself.

Next thing isn't necessarily a mistake per se, but learning to use php and css early on would of seen me producing better interactive/quality sites a lot sooner.

For us… (Tony&Cam) perhaps entering into the porn industry at a late age (in porn years) as performers was kinda, maybe kinda a mistake… we joke that if I'd waited a few more years, I might have needed a walker to get to the set! Oooohhhh, now their's a cute title, GERIATRIC PARK… is it already taken? Anyone wanna produce that one?

All kidding aside, the experience in real time careers did help a great deal when starting the production business. Our mistake then was not trusting our gut and warming up to people quickly - trusting too many.

Personally for me, my biggest mistake has been talking too much about how we go about doing what we do, thus giving away the keys to the car! Our success is no secret and I'm just real anxious to share! Cam always asks me why I don't just go ahead and teach a seminar on starting your own Gay Adult Video Production Business! (hmmm, there's a thought)

Actually, it's a good thought. One thing people often overlook, and that's the ability to make money from what they know. Service type businesses have been gaining ground over production (factory type products) in the US for quite some time. And having a degree isn't really a factor. Life experiences are a real and proven "teaching degree".

For me it's not seeing the true potential of my website and doubting myself all the time.

Yeah Bec, Maybe not a bad idea at all...

Maybe an "ADULT" extension class. Kinda like the courses we teach everyday at the "ZyloCo School of Pornographic Arts"...a virtual class of sorts...
