“Whether or not you’re into me, that’s okay. I just want people to know that I’m an option.” (Buck Angel)

What is it about Buck Angel, the self described “man with a vagina” that’s got everyone from the editors at Rolling Stone Magazine to the outrageous Howard Stern talking these days?

That’s one of the things I was trying to get at when I interviewed porn’s first female-to-male transsexual megastar recently as he was preparing for his upcoming appearance at the New York City’s legendary Black Party on March 25th.

The other thing I was trying to get at during our conversation was the man behind the persona.

I needed to know how this guy who looked more butch than I could ever imagine looking, started out life as a striking woman, became a male-to-female adult video star, had a sex change, underwent a stunning transformation and reappeared on the adult film scene as a burly, tattooed, macho as crap, cigar chomping gay porn stud.

Put simply, to call Buck Angel’s journey circuitous would be an understatement and I needed to fill in some blanks.

I had the chance to discuss porn, gender and sexuality issues and what really makes a man with Buck while he was on a break from shooting an upcoming adult feature. If this chat doesn’t make you think about transsexual culture and gender in a new way, then I’m sure TransAmerica went right over your head..

DW: So Buck, I just have to ask right off, what type of reaction you generally get from people, particularly gay men, when they find out about your…er…uh… story?

BA: When they first find out about me or when they first meet me? Those are two different things…{Laughs}

DW: Point taken. Well how about we start with people’s reaction when they first find out that you are a female-to-male transsexual.

BA: The reaction that I get after people find out about me is that they’re very shocked and they don’t believe it. Sometimes I literally have to drop my pants to show them and sometimes even then they still don’t believe it!

DW: And how do they respond? Are they just unclear?

BA: Yeah. They [people] don’t understand. They don’t believe I was born a female and I had a sex change and became a man. In a way it’s a total compliment. Then once they get a grasp of it, they’re very fascinated by it and very intrigued.

DW: But I guess what I’m getting at is that when I reviewed your oeuvre, particularly your latest Titan release, for this piece, I was unclear as to how I was supposed to respond to you and your whole persona on screen…

BA: Wow…were you disturbed…or…

DW: No, I definitely was not disturbed by it, I just didn’t know how I was supposed to react to it, physically or psychologically, which is what I would think would be the kind of quandary a lot of people watching you perform might have. {Laughing}

BA: {Laughs} Yeah gay men don’t know how to react to me. I get a lot of mail and email from gay men saying that they’re attracted to me but they’re not sure if it’s okay because I have a pussy. They don’t know what it makes them. I have to respond to them that it makes them gay because I am a man. I just happen to have a pussy, but that does not make me any less of a man.

As far as I’m concerned the cock doesn’t make the man. People have to understand that there are all types of variations on gender out there. If you’re attracted to me, you’re attracted to a man. It doesn’t make you any less gay, it just happens that you’re attracted to man with two holes instead of one.

DW: Which brings me to the question of why “two holes”? Every other part of your transformation is flawless, why not the whole she-bang…no pun intended?

BA: You mean why didn’t I have bottom surgery?

DW: Exactly.

BA: First of all the bottom surgery is not up to my standards. I’m sort of a perfectionist and I need to have a cock that works…a cock that looks like everybody else’s. The [current] bottom surgery doesn’t do that. The cock that I was going to get wasn’t going to look any where near the cock you have. For the money it was going to cost me and the amount of surgeries I was going to have go through, it just wasn’t an option.

I had to learn to accept the fact that I’m never going to have that cock, but that it doesn’t make me any less of a man. I’m totally a f--kin’ dude and whether or not people want to believe that or not, that’s their opinion and they’re entitled to it, but I don’t think that’s true. So I had to accept that this is the way in my life is going to be and be proud of the fact that I am a man with a pussy.

DW: And how did the decision to be so public about your private parts via the world of porn come about?

BA: I never thought I was going to be a porn star. That wasn’t something that I aspired to be through my sex change. But through watching and working behind the scenes in porn and doing transsexual women’s porn, I knew that there was nobody doing anything that I’m doing. Then I thought to myself, one day somebody’s going to get a hold of a guy like me and they’re going to make him into an f-kin’ freak and they’re going to make freak sex porn and I did not want to see that happen. Also, as a businessmen, I saw an opening for me to create a business that I could enjoy doing. Honestly I just wanted to do porn…I didn’t want it to become what it’s becoming which is so much more. I’m pioneering something. It’s opening up people’s feelings about gender and sexuality.
.
DW: Speaking of business, this seems like this has been a tremendous year for you…

BA: It’s definitely been the Buck Angel year for sure…

DW: You’re even performing at the Black Party, one of the highlights of the gay circuit, this year. Have you done much performing like this before now?

BA: I’ve never done a live performance before, so it’s going to be quite interesting and I’m actually looking forward to it. I mean I perform a lot on camera so I’m not shy but the Black Party is definitely going to be a very different situation performing live in front of an audience of gay men..

DW: So what do you have in store for this debut performance?

BA: [Laughs] It’s kind of a secret…

DW: I figured it was but I thought I’d ask anyway.

BA: It’s gonna be amazing and I’m really excited to be a part of it because it’s going to be tremendous…It’s groundbreaking. What you’re going to see is something you’ve never, ever seen in your whole life.

DW: Well if that description doesn’t build a buzz, I don’t know what will! Since we don’t know exactly what you’re going to be doing, can you tell me how you came to be a part of this year’s Black Party?

BA: Well they contacted me. I think they saw my Titan release “Cirque Noir” and they found out about me through that. So they called me up and asked me if I’d like to perform at the Black Party. At the time I had no idea what the Black Party was, so they sent me some information and I had to do some research.

Once I did my research and found out what it was, I was totally into it. I was really excited that they were open to bringing me into a situation that was pretty hardcore gay man. You know gay men tend to be a little ‘pussy-phobic’…

DW: Uh…yeah…you might say that.

BA: But the Black Party tends to be about breaking down those barriers and shoving things in people’s faces, so I think I’m perfect for the Black Party.

DW: So Buck, you’re performing with gay men in front of gay men at one of the penultimate annual gay events, the Black Party. On film, you have sex with men and women and even other transsexual women and men…and you seem to be equally enthusiastic no matter who your partner is. But will the real Buck Angel please stand up? What is it that you genuinely prefer sexually in your own private life? Or are you just pansexual?

BA: I’m totally pansexual. What you see on film is me. In my films nothing is staged, I enjoy sex just that much and that’s one of the things I wanted to convey in my films…real sex. I really have orgasms on film. But on a personal level, I enjoy having sex with women and I enjoy having sex with men. For me it has more to do with the person than the gender. I don’t give a s-t what you have between your legs.

DW: So if you had to sum up your message in a few sentences Buck, what would they be?

BA: I’m about making people think. I think it’s so important in a day and age where so much is happening and people are so hateful and nasty. It’s like c’mon people! It’s just sex! It’s just gender! People just want everything to be black and white and the world is just not black and white. There are so many things out there in the world to discover and I’m just one of them.

After talking to Buck Angel about gender, all I can see is shades of gray…and that is a very good thing for me (but for my poor sainted mother…maybe not so much).
