    Brokeback Mountain on DVD!

Wow, that was fast! Brokeback Mountain is coming out on DVD already. Anyone else gonna go pick it up? I really enjoyed it, but I'm not sure if I'd watch it again so soon. I'll probably pop it on Netflix in a few months for a second viewing.

The Brokeback site (http://www.brokebackmountain.com/) has a section for "Share Your Story", which is a really cool idea to have such a public forum for people who lived through that time period and had to go through similar situations. Sadly, when I tried it the link didn't work. Hopefully it will be back up soon.

You know, im noticing a lot more movies are coming out on DVD within a couple of months of them hitting the Big Screen.

Im wondering how long it will be before we start seeing blockbuster movies hitting the cinema then being launched on DVD within a week or two.

    Regards,

    Lee

Yeah that was pretty quick. Good because I did see it in the theatres and have been waiting for it on dvd.

Maybe not too long -- I was reading something a few days ago and most of the studios seem to be leaning that way (with the exception of Disney I think) -- the theatre associations are none too pleased though and is trying to convince anyone that will listen that it's a bad idea.

The April 4th release date was announced on Wolfe Video's site about 3 weeks ago.

I have been giving the DVD away free to customers as a promotion for 3 weeks!

Do any of you click the links to my sites on my sig?

And since Basic Instinct 2, with Sharon Stone's much hyped full frontal nude scene, ranked 10th on its opening weekend with $3 million in ticket sales (compared to #1 Ice Age with $60M), be looking for that on DVD in a couple of weeks!

I think the industry has figured out what we indie film makers have known for a long time: the market is in the home DVD (or VOD) sales.

I went to see Brokeback at one of the most famous Hollywood Theaters, and I actually was a bit intimidated about seeing a gay story in such a large pubic place, with so many strangers. The upside of seeing it at a famous Hollywood theater: A display of the actual movie costumes in the lobby!

As much as I would like to see Josh Hartnett, or Matthew McConaughey, or any number of Hollywood Hunks naked, I'd rather do that in my own home, than in a theater with 1000 strangers.

I think Basic Instinct 2's dismal sales tells us that Hetero's think the same way.

Not too long. I think we're going to see the window shrink. Studios are seeing an uptick in home video sales when they do this, as less people make the trip to the theaters. And this is a good title to release early... lots of curious people and if you ask around, "nobody" has seen it. LOL.

IMHO, many theaters are on the death watch. It won't be for many years, maybe a decade, but video on demand is about to pick up. George Lucas thinks same-day VOD is inevitable... which would be great. No more cell phones, yacking, etc.

We'll be more apt to rent it vs purchasing the DVD I think.

Hey, did you all see the article last week about the one actor actually suing the studio because they misrepresented their target audience and budget, saying it was going to be a cult/art film? Based on that, the guy took a flat fee and didn't go after his usual % cut.

Actually, the release isn't any faster than the release of other movies that hit video within 3-4 mos. after a film's release. Brokeback came out last November, so an April DVD launch isn't that unheard of. Brokeback's post-Oscar theater take had pretty much run its course as well.

I don't think it takes as long to put a DVD together as it used to, back when we had to wait at least 6 mos. to a year for a movie to come out on home video. It's a good thing, but I hardly think it means that movie theaters are on their way out.

Newsflash to all the "sky is falling" people who think movie theaters are dying, you're dead wrong. Nothing will ever take the place of seeing a movie on the big screen with a crowd of people. For a lot of us (myself included), the best part of the movie experience is, in fact, sharing it with a group of people and hearing their reactions -- and seeing it on the big screen. Nothing will ever replace that. Mark my words: That's a fact.

GASP! What kind of a proud, evolved 21st century fag are you!? LOL!

I was a little nervous when I first saw the trailers for the movie. They played it before Harry Potter, and I almost shrunk into my seat when they showed the two guys hugging, so I know what you mean. But I saw the movie at the ArcLight three times -- yes, three times. And all three times I really enjoyed the experience of seeing it with a bunch of mostly-hetero strangers. That was a pretty encouraging experience. I was proud to be seen walking into the theater, and even more proud to be supporting such a great film.

Yeah, it was Randy Quaid, and I think it's pretty silly. I'm sure when the studio put the movie together, they probably did think it wasn't going to be that successful. I think Quaid saw how huge it became and got a little bit greedy. It's not like he's Tom Cruise or anything.

I'm with you. My friend got a big HD flatscreen and claimed that he doesn't need to go to the movies anymore. That's just silly. I can't imagine not going to the movies at least once in a while. I love going to the movies. Especially the Arclight. Saw King Kong in the Cinerama Dome. Waaaay cool. I even got a little airsick during the pilot-eye view shots of the planes attacking Kong on top of the Empire State Building.

I didn't mean to imply all theaters are going away entirely, but conditions at many have been deteriorating. Some go digital, but the screen is about the size of a post card. Until they do something to be more competitive and improve the quality of the overall experience, many just won't bother if they can watch in HD from home on the same day of the theater release.

Of course the ArcLight will always be there. But we're not so lucky over here in East Bumfuck, PA. LOL.

Some people like going to movies to be entertained or enlightened by the film experience, others like the movie going social experience.

The little city I come from in Minnesota has a movie theater that used to be one big house in the 1970s, divided it into 2 in the 1980s, and it is now divided into 4.

In towns like that, you might as well rent the DVD and watch it at home.

In bing cities, and especially here in Hollywood, there will be the Arclight, The Chinese and The Grove to perpetuate the grand scale cinematic experience.

A few times a year, I go to the USC FIlm School screenings at the Warner Bros' Pacific Theater up on Hollywood Blvd of digital versions of movies... followed by an hour of Q&A with Production execs.

I've seen Incredibles, Narmia, Harry Potter, and the remastered Wizard of Oz (they took the Technicolor negs, re-scanned them at 4096DPI, wrote software to re-converge the three technicolor negatives to make sharper images, and projected it in 2048DPI on a 65-foot screen - saw things I've never seen before!).

I saw Harry Potter in digital projection at the Chinese when it came out. I actually liked it better at the Pacific 2 weeks later (slightly smaller house and screen), because it was a bit brighter than at the CHinese.

Of course, 2005's highlight for me was the B&W "Good Night, And Good Luck". Can't hide anything in B&W.

Oh yeah, I can understand that. There's a place in LA called the Beverly Center. It's a very upscale shopping mall, with frou frou stores and fancy restaurants. You would think they would have a really nice cinema, but they don't. It's a piece of shit! It's like watching a movie on a Hershey bar! I won't go see movies there anymore. Of course, right up the street at the Grove there's a nice cinema with stadium seating and a pour-your-own-butter-like-substance station by the snack bar.
