    blocking countries

Can anyone recommend some good software or scripts for blocking or redirecting traffic from specific countries? Thanks in advance for your help.

Ya I would like that too, I know how you feel man especially with all the Asian traffic you are getting. I know this is a pipe dream, but I also wish we could block certain people IP’s that have visited our sites lets say 2,000 times and have never paid anyone a dime. But that would take a level of cooperation, unheard of in any industry. :yeah:

Dan you can use the database from http://www.ip2location.com/

    or

    http://www.maxmind.com

They both have products you can buy to do exactly what you need.

You do realize by 'gay' I mean a man who has sex with other men?

You can also block traffic directly using .htaccess, .php and javascript by blocking the surfer based on their browser language settings.

Run a search on the community for 'foreign' and that should pull up some articles for you with instructions on how to do it

    Thanks so much guys.

Max, I'm doing it to protect some of our models who are afraid their mom's will see it, not because it's 'Asian' traffic. But the traffic I want to block comes from developing countries where we never get sign-ups anyways.

    Cheers,
    Dan

hmmm... if you start blocking countries, hope you'll let your affiliates know so they can send the traffic from those countries elsewhere...

Since you guys have paysites, the simplest thing you can do is signup for GX Bill - they are a pay-by-phone company that supports broadband and dialup and backs into your own paysites. But here's the real kewl thing, they offer you a free geotargeting script. You select your countries you want to block, add literally 2 lines of code to any page and those surfers get redirected to their payment page. So not only do you get to stop wasting traffic on those surfers, but you can also make the occasional sale too.

    cheers,
    Luke

    Hey Basschick,

We're going to be blocking Laos and Thailand from a paysite we haven't released yet, so it won't affect any affiliates at the moment. I can't recall ever seeing sales coming from those countries.

Most pornsites are already blocked from Thailand anyways. The goverment there has gone the way of China and just about every large gay porn site is already blocked there.

    Cheers,
    D.

Thanks for the tip Chilihost. We do use GXBill and I am aware of their Geo script. In fact, I gave them the suggestion to change their 'join' page for Japanese traffic to Japanese language and since they did that for us we've been getting a lot more in phone sales from Japan.

Rather than blocking, have you thought about redirecting that traffic to another, more demographically appropriate site? IMO, no sense in throwing that traffic away.

    Hey Bijou,

Yes actually, that's why I'm going to take a look at the software Tom recommended and see which one makes it easiest to do that. Right now I'm thinking of sending the traffic to a non-porn affiliate program like Musclebucks, or perhaps some sort of pay per click program. Do you (or anyone else) have any other good suggestions?

    Thanks!

Sending traffic that you know can't or won't buy to another paysite doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Why not redirect the traffic to one of your hubsites, at least get some SE mileage from the hits? Just make darn sure you have .htaccess blocking hotlinking on it!:goseek:

Good point. I really think the only way to make any money off traffic like this is a PPC program, or else some kind of mainstream affiliate program that caters to the language and country that I'm blocking the porn from. And I think the money would be so little I'm not even sure it's worth the time...

I came in kinda sideways on why I suggested using the traffic to help out a hub. In your case -- I'd send it to KissJapan. It pushes up traffic to that site, elevates the SE ranking for Asian Gay searches, gets some guys added into your hot or not, forum, and personals postings ... which eventually drags in the guys who do have a legit credit card for the upsells on the site.

ps ... your forum there seriously needs cleaned up of all the spam. It's hard to even find a real post on there. Make 'em signup or use some sort of spam blocker and a system where they have to manually type in that random code word in order to submit the post. That stops most of the autobots dumping a gazillion posts about their casinos into your forum.
