I Wonder? Methods Of Reducing Bandwidth Usage?

I was looking through our hosts stats this weekend and noticed that our BW usage has increased quite dramatically over the past couple of weeks for no reason other than a significant increase in traffic.

With that being said, does anyone have any hints or tips on how webmasters can decrease their BW usage?

I know about things like adding anti-hotlinking to .htaccess files and optimizing image file sizes but i was wondering if there are any other methods we can be using to minimize how much BW we use with our sites?

So, anyone got any hints or tips they would like to share with the community?

    Regards,

    Lee

Are you speaking in broad terms of BW used to all sites or just paysites?

you really need to know why you are burning more bandwidth. Is it a specific domain that you use for tgp or freesites, is it your members content being used more, is it perhaps something else?

Then you can decide IF you want to reduce bandwidth and how.

    cheers,

    Bec,

    Just in general hon.

    Luke,

I know why we're using more BW, our traffic has almost tripled in the last 2 months due to some purchases and additional in house traffic generation.

Im just wondering what tricks were out there to minimize bw usage overall.

    Regards,

    Lee

ummm...if you are purchasing and generating more traffic then it makes sense your bandwidth is increasing LOL!!!

in general, you can cut down on bandwidth by using text instead of banners, by optimizing every image you have on a site (including stuff you get from your affiliate programs such as banners) and by ensuring proper htaccess protection.

    cheers,
    Luke

Very good advice. I track every object view in our properties. If we run into bandwidth issues, I could write a report to identify the objects that account for the largest use of bandwidth.

Based on that information, I would make one (or more) of the following decisions:
    - Optimize the object to reduce file size.
    - Limit access to those objects to more appropriate traffic.
    - Increase pricing for access (if applicable).
    - Remove the object.
