Must See Movie of the Summer (no joke)

    Peaceful Warrior

If I may make a recommendation. I was given the book "Way Of The Peaceful Warrior" by Dan Millman a few years ago, and it totally changed my life. I know that sounds like a bunch of new age junk but I'm totally serious. I had so many issues with my family that we were in danger of never speaking again. Because of the principals discussed in this book I was able to look at the people in my family and the events of my past in a totally new light and I was able to rectify things that had long since been major problems. I'm not saying I'm perfect today but this book helped me put to rest a lot of issues and to take on new challenges that I would never have been able to. And the best part of it was that it was not presented like those awful new age self-help books, it's a semi-autobiographical story, taking parts of Millman's life and putting them into the story of a young man who finds an unlikely mentor at a gas station late one night.

It has now been made into a movie and after seeing the trailer I am so freakin' excited. I hope the movie has as much impact as the book, or at the very least gets people interested enough to read it.

Actually, I had the pleasure of hearing Dan Millman speak at a book signing last year and when he announced to the crowd that Nick Nolte would be playing the part of Socrates, a character that all of his fans have loved and admired over the years, there was a collective gasp from the audience, to which Millman replied something like "I know, but I've seen the rough cut and he's really good." LOL!

p.s ~ the basis of my life is patterned after this movie and gave me the drive to rise above my coffee-picker status and strive for something more.

Hey Don, I actually saw this movie a couple weeks ago during a press screening. Can't say I agree with you. It's not a must-see movie of the summer, unless you appreciate overwrought dramatics and overly obvious dialogue. The director, Victor Salva, who many of you may remember as the director of Powder and Jeeper's Creepers (and a convicted child molester), stages most of the scenes in the same "Whoa!" mysticism that marred Powder, and after a while, it all turns into that kind of flaky spiritualism that people tend to ignore. And there's no denying that Salva is gay gay gay--he stages all the scenes of the athletes like he wants to film the Abercrombie and Fitch catalogues as softcore porn flicks. Then there's the whole young hot boy being taught by an older man thing. It's actually a bit discomforting to watch, especially knowning his background with the law.

That's my $.02 anyway. You might enjoy it.

Scott Meklowitz is a fuckin' hottie, though. Plenty of shots of him with his shirt off and in tank tops.

If you guys want to see this kid do some stunning acting, forget Peaceful Warrior and check out Mean Creek, my choice for the best film of 2004. It's one of the most authentic films about adolescence I've ever seen. It's like The Breakfast Club as a tragedy, or what you might get if Kids director Larry Clark had directed Stand by Me.

Mechlowicz is amazing in the movie.

Well I'm still going to see it. And while I don't agree with the director, the story is the draw for me. I think the younger generation has a lot to learn from the elders and so many ignore that.

Personally, I don't care about the director, but sadly, he just wasn't the right one for this movie. The merits of the story are lost in his heavy-handed execution.

But I hope you enjoy it.

yeah, but most movies these days change the books enough that usually the story is changed out of recognition, or at very least the ultimate message.

hope you love it when you see it, sweetie!

sadly it isn't until we get older we realize the "real-message" behind these stories made into movies , i mean a woman that shares a bed with 7 dwarfs , i'm completely "marred" for life.

This book changed my life as well and helped me find a lot of strength years ago. I CAN'T WAIT to see what they've done with the book in this movie.

The trailer looks great and that song from Sia in the trailer is moving.

I think they put Nick Noltie in the Socraties roll to appeal to the grunts of the male demographic.. from the trailer he doesn't seem to offensive at all, very surprising.

Can't wait to see this. Thanks for the post I had no idea this movie was coming out.
