Do you have a site now you're building and asking if a straight guy can or should consider also doing gay sites? Or would the gay site be your first ever porn site?

If you have a straight site of some kind as your first porn site, I'd work it awhile until you get comfortable with the work involved and a good solid marketing plan in place before taking on a segment of the porn industry that you aren't familiar with yet. Gay sites aren't just about putting up pics of men having sex together ... it's a lifestyle with a lot of subniches that you do need to have a clue about in order to build something that gay men would really want to see.

Some excellent advice I've seen over and over and over that is given to new folk wanting to enter the Adult Industry Business is this: for your first couple of sites - build sites with the kind of content that gets YOU excited. The more a niche interests you, the better the quality of site(s) you'll build, and you'll be more willing to go the distance to see them succeed.

With that said -- yes, straight men can and do build Gay websites. And if you really want to learn about the Gay market ... you're in the right place. Start reading, reading, reading, ask questions and read some more.

You do realize by 'gay' I mean a man who has sex with other men?

Okay this may just be the perv side of me but by starting with a friend do you mean that you are going to build one together or be content on one together?

    Regards,

    Lee

So what type of gay site are you going to make? Almost sounds like you're coming at this with a bi-curiosity angle?

just because someone is gay does give them special insight into whether a site niche will succeed. some of my gay non-webmaster friends have had THE worst site suggestions. actually ALL my non-webmaster friends have awful suggestions for sites *LOL*

i suggest you run your site idea by a few qualified webmasters before investing large amounts of time and/or money into the site. also check the niche against inventory.overture.com by checking it in the search box. this will tell you how many people actively searched for that term last month. if people are looking for your niche, it's a good sign. if they aren't, talk it over here and see what people think.

more people fail than succeed in our line of work. that being said, i hope your site works out, and best of luck to you!

If you're fine with working on gay stuff then why not.. i'm gay working on straight stuff... i don't see a problem. I'm even doing a better job than some straight designers

You're ambitious, you're not afraid of working late... you love money? then go for it

First off, congratulations on taking the leap, and best of luck to you! You're definitely on the right track coming to this particular forum to ask questions, and no matter how your questions may be received or responded to, keep coming back and asking even the most obvious questions. Many of us have been here for a while, have made lots of mistakes and therefore have the wisdom that comes from experience to help you not make the same mistakes. You're starting a gay porn site... good for you.. there's no reason to reinvent the wheel (unless you really truly intend to) we can give you sound and solid advice to save you a lot of time and headaches.

Now, on to your venture... If your friend is gay, that helps with creating something that people actually want to spend money on. If not, you're better to focus on stuff that actually turns you on, but, despite what others may say, you CAN create a successful gay site based purely on trial and error, and, most importantly, coming back here and asking for feedback and suggestions and... BUILDING GREAT RELATIONSHIPS. I recommend you check out some of the many different programs that exist with gay sites.. for a little inspiration as to what works. They've/ we've already taken a lot of the guess work out of it for you. Take a look at a few different approaches... for example, BEDFELLOW.COM offers a site (just the one site) that is possibly the most successful gay porn site on the internet, GAY.COM runs a very successful gay portal, BADPUPPY.COM is also a successful site/ program that you can learn a lot from just by looking at what they've done and how they've done it. PYTHONPAYS.COM is typical of a megasite affiliate program that is more focussed on churning out zlots of different sites in different niches quickly (and effectively) TOPBUCKS.COM is another large affiliate program similar in nature to PYTHONPAYS. All of these differing models (and there are many more than I've listed) work very successfully in their own ways, with different traffic, and with different philosophies on what works best. Do your homework... Again, there's no reason to reinvent the wheel... BUT, perhaps you can be the one to assess what's out there and improve on what we're all doing with a fresh perspective!

My resounding cry to the straight segment of this industry, for a long time now, has been... if you're ignoring the gay market, or worse yet, exercising that indescribabely delinquent strain of homophobia that we see all too often on other boards, you're not only missing out on business (money in the bank) but are also a complete and utter fucking idiot... or words to that effect. So again, congratulations to you for being wise enough to do this. It's like ignoring the foreign traffic you inevitably have... why waste traffic when there are great options for converting it. NOW... to flip that around slightly... remember to offer something (however subtly) for straight surfers as well (just in an exit window or something) Just as a certain small percentage of 'straight' traffic will convert on gay sites... the same is true for 'gay' traffic. So, at least offer links to sponsors with bisexual, straight and transsexual sites as well..(in an exit window that is). And if you're not sure about popping a window when they leave, remember, they're already gone, so you may as well try and sell them something they DO want on their way out the door! Not too aggressively though. Just one or two exit windows really is all that makes the difference without pissing off surfers. But, I guarantee it will make you more money.. which is what you're trying to do, right?

Okay.. forgive me if my response was a little long... Apparently I'm on a typing frenzy tonight!

I hope that helps... or at least makes some sense. Again, congratulations on recognizing and proactively approaching a great and flourishing online market, and for having the sense to come here and ask. Keep asking!! whew.. :bandana:

I have always recommended to go with what you believe in so that whatever market your heading into - your heart is there and it isnt all about the money... though many would look right at me and say, "its all about the money!!!"

I wish you all the best in the venture and stay open minded
