    Save the Internet

This was sent to me by a porn star. Thought I would post it here as well.

    *******************************************

I don't often send out bulk e-mails so please read this if you have a
sec. Right now AT&T is lobbying congress to remove the Internet's
First Amendment, which is Network Neutrality. This means that all
websites are created equal. Taking away this right would mean
websites would have to PAY AT&T so that their pages don't load slower
    than their competition.

If you haven't yet signed the moveon.org petition to save the
internet, PLEASE DO NOW. The fact that the neutrality of the
Internet is even being questioned is a scary idea. What this means
is that companies like AT&T (who are lobbying congress to gut Network
Neutrality) will decide which websites load faster, and almost every
popular site—from Google to eBay to iTunes—must either pay protection
money to Internet companies like AT&T or risk having their websites
    process slowly.

Internet providers like AT&T are lobbying Congress hard to gut
Network Neutrality—the Internet's First Amendment and the key to
Internet freedom. Net Neutrality prevents AT&T from choosing which
websites open most easily for you based on which site pays AT&T more.
BarnesandNoble.com doesn't have to outbid Amazon for the right to
    work properly on your computer.

Do you want some CORPORATION to decide which websites open up faster
on your computer? I think this idea is RIDICULOUS, and shoudn't be
taken lightly. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take 2 minutes out of your porn-
    surfing time to... http://civic.moveon.org/save_the_internet/?
    id=7449-6660235-frRcLK2XSSqv6yPLi9Yk.g&t=1...SIGN THIS PETITION.
    Thanks!!

Uh, once again, Sean, you've shown your ignorance.

The anti-net neutrality movement was started by Bellsouth about a year ago. When SBC bought AT&T and then turned around and acquired Bellsouth (thereby controlling a very large percentage of the US Internet backbone and transit infrastructure), they ratcheted up the heat to get rules passed allowing "preferential treatment" to partners who pay for it.

This is in preparation to offer television services over IP, to compete with the cable companies. Not to mention, being able to effectively censor and limit access to parts of the Net they don't like.

It is very real and, while not as ill-conceived as .xxx, it most definitely has the potential to seriously damage the open and free access to the Net now enjoyed worldwide.

Not surprisingly, MCI (who owns another large portion of the US Internet backbone) is strongly in support of "selective traffic", and equally unsurprisingly, Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and others are strongly against the removal of Net neutrality.

One bill failed to pass Congress a few weeks ago, but another was introduced by the Democrats and is actually getting some traction.

This is a very real issue.
