US goverment to log ALL internet activity !!

A prominent Republican on Capitol Hill has prepared legislation that would rewrite Internet privacy rules by requiring that logs of ALL Americans' online activities be stored !

The proposal comes just weeks after Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Internet service providers should retain records of user activities for a "reasonable amount of time," a move that represented a dramatic shift in the Bush administration's views on privacy.

Wisconsin Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, is proposing that ISPs be required to record information about Americans' online activities so that police can more easily "conduct criminal investigations." Executives at companies that fail to comply would be fined and imprisoned for up to one year.

In addition, Sensenbrenner's legislation--expected to be announced as early as this week--also would create a federal felony targeted at bloggers, search engines, e-mail service providers and many other Web sites. It's aimed at any site that might have "reason to believe" it facilitates access to child pornography--through hyperlinks or a discussion forum, for instance.

(full story here ) full story here.

Wow, talk about an invasion of privacy. again using the dreaded "Save the children banner" now they want cart blanch to log all your data , every time you look at your bank records on line.. logged. you check out an artical against bush.. Logged. you key in a particular keyword into google... Logged .. and all in a neat serchable system.. did we just LOSE our right to privacy ?

If I never hear the words CP again it would be too soon, why can people not see this is how theses people work. They make people afraid, or angry then exploit that to do what they really wanted to do in the first place, that normally has nothing to do with what they said it does.

I doubt this would pass but if it does it would be a total mess... not to mention, think how much money it would cost the ISPs and probably the gov to make this into a reality. maybe its just political pandering before mid term elections?

if this happened, I think offshore proxy server services to encrypt internet activity would have a whole lot of new business coming their way! also, I wonder what kind of checks and balances would be put in place to limit the gov accessing someones activity without a warrant.

If the ISPs are logging it, couldnt an official just coerce them into looking up information on anyone without having to get a court order?

Probably. The erosion of our rights and our privacy protections are rapidly moving in the direction of making this country look like the Stalin era.

Hey Guys, come on now, your forgetting the point here. We need to protect the children. In the same way that the new 2257 regulations have helped to save hundreds of thousands of children who were being abused by the pornography industry, by simply handing over all our private information we can assure that no child will ever be abused again! Innocent victims like Justin Berry who ran there own pornography websites for profit will never be hurt again. That is after all the goal here correct?

Isn't Bush getting in trouble because after 9-11 the homeland security department has been logging all telephone call records for every American and that has recently surfaced? I saw a news article on it a few days ago. If they are not allowed to monitor innocent people's phone records I doubt very highly they would be able to pass a bill like this, kinda squashes the whole "freedom" thing.

Also, can you imagine what would have to be implemented technically for this to work? They would have to force all ISPs to log all activity and then have those transferred to a central database somewhere. The cost of the equipment for the ISPs alone (plus the additional bandwidth) would be huge!!!
