    aren't MP4's real videos?

i am reviewing a site that proudly talks about their quicktime videos, but the videos wouldn't play for me in their embedded players. quicktime said it couldn't do it. when i saved the videos, they proved to be mp4's, which as i recall are real videos (i don't use real) and my computer certainly thinks they are.

anyone confirm or deny this for me?

From what i recall, MP4 needs a special plugin in order to play in Win Media.

You can probably find a link to the plugin on the Microsoft website.

I was going to encode all of our movies in the members area using the MP4 standard but realized after the first one that a lot of surfers probably wouldnt have the additional plugin installed so scrapped that idea, at least until MP4 becomes smewhat of a 'standard'.

Mp4 files are IPOD and Itunes compatible player formats, not REAL or WMV formats.

When Quicktime came out with its latest format (V6? not sure), it was supposed to be completely compatible with MP4. It was never clear to me if they were identical or just one was backwards compatible with the other, but I bet if you do a Google search you'll find a reference to it.

Real Media is, as far as I know, completely proprietary and not MPEG compatible at all.
